2021 Insert & Credit Film Poll RESULTS THREAD

Time to get real

The results are in! Thanks to everyone who participated. Not as huge a sample size as in our video game poll so the data looks a little different, but we’ve still got a big beautiful list for you here.

As in that previous poll, let’s begin with some HARD NUMBERS:

35 forum users submitted a total of 350 votes

302 films were chosen, 261 of which received only one vote. 86% of the films chosen received only one vote (in the game poll this number was 65%)

8 films received 3 votes each and compose the list of Insert Credit Essentials

33 films received 2 votes each and compose the Honor Roll

The remaining 261 are the… Sub-Honor Roll

1989 is the average year of release. The oldest film submitted was released in 1926 (the first feature film was shown in 1906, 20 years earlier). The newest film submitted was released in 2019 (the year they stopped making films).

1 hour 56 minutes is the average running time. The longest film submitted runs 9 hours 39 minutes, and the shortest runs 14 minutes.

Akira Kurosawa had the greatest number of films on the list at 4, which in total received 6 votes. Hayao Miyazaki’s 3 films received the greatest number of votes among them at 7. Andrei Tarkovsky received 6 votes for 2 films.

The United States produced or coproduced the greatest number of films at 138.
Japan produced or coproduced 54 films, and France produced or coproduced 53.
The Phillipines and the Czech Republic each produced 1 film on the list.

The Most “Insert Credit” Forum Users were

*defined as those whose choices were the least aligned with the Sight & Sound polled directors and critics and the IMDb Top 250

**(##) = total number of points (you don’t want these points)

Congratulations, all.

(the three “lowest” scores were 1435, 711, and 331, to give an idea of the bad math at work here)

For the list: if any film shows more than one run time, it is because at least one user submitted each of those cuts of the film for their list.

Fascinating statistics! Sure do love to see a big, fat list on Forums Dot Insert Credit Dot Com. I did not participate in this poll since I couldn‘t even think of ten movies I’ve seen that I‘d say I like enough to put on a list. Just haven’t seen that many of them. But now I have a great resource to start checking things out!!

so glad whisper of the heart made it! love that movie

Interesting results, and not too far off from my prediction:

Love seeing Whisper of the Heart as an essential film. I personally disliked Sorry to Bother You, but judging from the discussion of it on the movie thread, I’m not surprised to see it on the essentials list. I will have to check out Amadeus. Youtube Movies has been recommending it to me for the past three years, for some reason.

Appreciate all the effort that went into organizing this in the first place, and then analyzing and presenting all the data. I would like to hope that it was fun for you and not a major chore.

@captain, always fun to read these stat-filled posts. I’ll try to catch up on Sorry to Bother You in 2022.

Very happy to see Biollante in the 2 vote camp

Thanks for all the effort, @captain !

Wow I was surprised to see カメラを止めるな! / One Cut of the Dead in the 2-vote honour roll, I didn’t notice anyone else vote for it. Nice!

Guess I’ll have to watch Amadeus also.

Something may be a chore and a labor of love at the same time ;)

It was all fun, though I think I collected too much data; I am still figuring out a way to transmute it into interesting stats.

NOTABLE OMISSIONS FROM THE INSERT CREDIT LIST

For my part I have just recently seen The Passion of Joan of Arc and Patlabor 2: The Movie, and I can attest they deserve to be on this list!

As part of my research I obviously had to look up every one of these for technical information, and am newly interested in seeing (at least) these:

Céline et Julie vont en bateau
C’est arrivé près de chez vous
Fascination: Portrait of a Lady
Histoire(s) du cinéma (not on the list but mentioned in the poll thread)
Infernal Affairs
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Le Roi et l’oiseau
Ten
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders
Zatoichi (2003) (almost watched this on an airplane recently)

Yesterday I got to see the Racer Trash cut (vertihwg) which includes this magnificent seg

(The whole cut was amazing)

Thanks @captain for this barrel bursting data! The numbers of iconoclasm are busting my brain open, and I’m floored that Sound of Noise made it onto the runner up list. I don’t necessarily remember putting it on mine, but I have to imagine that I did.

I have begun the watch of the essentials list, the only one I’ve seen before is Alien but, I don’t think I payed much attention.

I started with Sorry to Bother You. I liked it for the most part but after a certain point it started running out of gas. There was some really good comedy at the start. To accompany the film, I ate seven steamed dumplings on a bowl of frozen vegetables with a fried tortilla on the side. I drank multiple bottles of water as I had been on a run earlier in the evening.

I will likely go in reverse chronological order with this list. Although, it looks like I may need to plan an evening around Mr. Tarkovsky’s films.

@captain Correct this at your leisure, mostly pointing out because I think it’s funny, but I think the wrong late 70s erotic art house movie called Fascination got tallied. Should be 1979’s Fascination directed by Jean Rollin instead of 1977’s Fascination directed by Koyu Ohara. (Unless both were somehow chosen, which would be even funnier, but either way the former is missing)

@TracyDMcGrath Oh my, OOPS, I have no idea how that happened. I just checked your original submission, which I could have sworn included the subtitle indicating the 1977 film, but I made it all up!

You even posted a screenshot from it with the sickle lady, I should have realized

Some list! Being one of three voters for an “Essentials” film makes me feel like I’m on the Cannes jury or something.

The only Essentials list movies I haven’t seen are the Tarkovskys. The only one of his I’ve seen was Solyaris when I was sixteen or so. Looks like I’m in for six more hours of that soon.

I watched Mulholland Drive tonight, I got to a point where I thought “What is going on? What is this essential movies list, two duds in a row? Is this just David Lynch unrestrained?” But then it was making sense by the end. Bravo Mr Lynch! You saved the list.
Like the last there was some comedy at the start, but by the end this was a Shakespearian tragedy. I think this would be a good movie to watch on a CRT in a dark but comfortable room. I watched it on my laptop, the first half hour while eating at a coffee table, then the rest in bed. In a cinema would be too scary or unnerving.
