@“tokucowboy”#p68103 do any Japanese speakers have a better summary?
I'm by no means fluent, but I think it says

“I was upset about a YouTube thing so they Kojima‘d me. Sonic was good, wasn’t it? PS I'm totally standing in front of a court house which means I have gravitas and this is all true and none of it was my fault ok bye”
@"billy "#p68148 Thank you. @Chopemon, might wanna update that source, translation seems questionable in comparison
Something I‘ve just noticed after looking it up is that Yuji Naka had only directed two games before this (Chu Chu Rocket and Ivy the Kiwi, if anyone’s wondering). While it would be tempting to argue having that level of creative control over a project proved too much for him, he was a producer on a lot of games before this, and the distinct, consistent voice on them suggests a degree of creative input that would contradict that argument. Still it may be something to think about.
@“Video_Game_King”#p68187 one thing to consider is that Japanese business titles often do not carry the same significance we might assign to the English equivalent. I know from experience as a website “supervisor” and later “director” who had little actual decision making authority haha

yOu cAn‘T aCkShUaLlY see the screen on any old portables why don’t you just replace all unlit LCD screens with a drop-in backlit IPS LCD (which introduces lag, has no subpixels, results in stock OEM parts going into the trash, and requires irreversible mods)
>
wow playdate is so awesome, the screen is so unique and crisp, unlike any other device you can play it outside in the sun because of the unique never before seen screen technology!!! it looks so good in the sun unlike every other portable device!! wow !!

@“treefroggy”#p68204 it‘s only a matter of time (and money lol) before I get myself a WS at this rate. Does the SwanCrystal’s screen introduce a bunch of awfulness like the AGS-101's ghosting?
@“connrrr”#p68211 Not to get off topic here but I‘m drafting a pretty big WS post as well as an LCD writeup I’ve had on the backburner for years while I collect data and photos. SwanCrystal objectively has a slightly better screen, but personally I prefer the design of the previous wonderswan consoles much more. Previous models both have very good screens with an insane 75 Hz refresh rate.
One part of said posts will be my exposé on the fact that everyone is using incorrect polarizing film to restore B&W wonderswan screens. No one seems to care that WS screens are supposed to be B&W and were never meant to be pea green like a gameboy DMG. But now the market is saturated with pea green wonderswan screens, because it's cheaper than the backlit lcd kits.
My little posts won't (nor do they need to) reach the masses, but I'm hoping that eventually someone makes a PSA about this. Original stock reflective LCD's have been **devalued**. The more brash voices in retro gaming liken them to _"garbage unviewable by anyone"_. Those original screens are totally unique to these portable consoles, will never be produced again, and they are being thrown away en masse in favor of backlit LCDs.
You'd think gamers would be keen to this, since CRTs are now coveted. For every portable console produced, there is one hundred million CRTs.
You may think it's a jump to say that LCD drop ins = original screen in the trash, since there's a very quiet narrative of "only drop in to consoles with broken screens, properly save/sell/recycle the original", but realistically, game shops, gameboy sellers, and hobbyists don't act ethically when it comes to this stuff.
@“treefroggy”#p68262 I think some shops might resell the oem screens, which is how I got a replacement for the damaged one in my SP. By and large though, I see it—every time I find myself in conversation with someone about this off of IC it‘s either with one asshole or some other asshole wedging themselves in to pontificate about what is and isn’t oBjEcTiVeLy SuPeRiOr. It's really discouraging. It would be one thing if they were just happily enjoying their IPS mods, but they have to evangelize and seem driven to stamp out any discussion of alternate approaches to playing old video games.
I think if there were a PVM equivalent in the handheld screen space then you wouldn't see insecure men with weak convictions whose self-worth is tied to their hobby brainwashed into this drop-in "upgrade" fad, but there isn't one (as far as I know) (also don't mean to imply everyone who goes IPS is like this).
I'll look forward to your WS post!
**edit** Also wow, excuse me for this post. I'm trying to be less angry but it's not always easy. help.
@“connrrr”#p68267 SP doesn‘t count because it’s backlit though! shops that have OEM non backlit screens for sale would have a hard time selling them, and anecdotally I know of shops that literally throw import cartridges in the garbage because they don't sell…
Making this thread is a lot of work, digging through photographic evidence I've taken of times I'm "aCkShUwAlLy playing" these games in various circumstances of day-to-day life. Not just photographing titles screens, showing that I'm 16 hours deep in an RPG on my unlit original GBA (one of the most heavily criticized screens in existence). This is why I don't make content outside of writing and posting photos, it's a lot of work, and I don't play games to promote myself or generate content, I play games for entertainment, and the way I see being the most enjoyable is contrary to the loudest narrative out there, a narrative which does lead to some stuff that makes me sad from a preservation and environmental standpoint.
on the subject of our mutual bitterness...
_I posted this in a discord, and one guy really took offense to my patronizing attitude._ This is why I'm not making videos, promoting myself, just trying to get the word out there. I'm just one guy, I'm not always the most diplomatic, and I'm emotional. **Sometimes things really are one-sided**, and in this case, it sure feels like it. Also, your attitude here, if anything, is kind of validating to me. On IC a couple people have come out to discuss this with me, and it's been nice. I think that guy who takes offense to my attitude is missing the point, they should understand why someone would be pretty annoyed by this. There are currently more pea-green Wonderswans on the market than there are original B&W screens, with very little effort or voices speaking to preserve them.
**My only goal is to shift the narrative, getting awareness to content creators, then there are many people who won't throw their oem screens in the trash**. Narrative is important, and right now the dominant narrative is that the screens are trash. And that's SAD!!!!!!
but yeah, IMHO game collectors are becoming more like PT Cruiser Dads by the minute, lol.
if YOU can't see YOUR screen, that's understandable!
@“treefroggy”#p68275 this was the frontlit model screen, though! But also I thought maybe they had more than three in stock, and they all ran out. Probably someone who swapped the screens in their own models or their friends', not a store.
I'm worried it might take a youtuber to shift the narrative, or maybe the problem will take care of itself when people realize how inaccurate their new screens look? Another possibility, for the IPS side, is if the tech matured enough that the control boards had subpixel emulation and tuned colour temperatures built-in like with the Analog Pocket. That I might be ok with, but then people are still throwing out perfectly good screens with qualities a backlit display cannot replicate.
Also: I pulled the trigger on a WS while we've been talking. If it needs new polarizer film, where would I find the right kind? Aliexpress?
@“connrrr”#p68281 Yeah it will take exactly a youtuber to shift the narrative, because youtubers started the narrative in the first place. (Metaljesus‘ video “ULTIMATE GAMEBOY ADVANCE” ~(that I will never play))
But also, I need to be self-aware, that the reason I feel strongly about this, is because I am the exact age window that has nostalgia for the original Gameboy Advance…. and I had to play it as a kid. I remember beating Wario Land 4 for the first time on it, only having F-zero maximum velocity for several months and a weird trip to a condo and being sooo bored of it. playing Mario Advance 1 on it, then pokemon sapphire. Playing Metroid Fusion in Best Buy on a demo unit before I had a gameboy advance. The hype for GBA SP and what a true game changer it was……
So maybe it is a shitty screen. but I love it. and I love using it in sunlight and under reading lamps. I am finally playing through golden sun, and when I played golden sun as a kid, it was on an AGB with the “horrible” screen. I gave myself too much stress today. I’m having a glass of wine.
I recommend buying a wonderswan with new polarizer film installed because in my experience removing the burnt original screen is a major pain in the ass. you can then easily replace the aftermarket polarizer film down the line if you want to.
So far, [this FSTN is the best I've found](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000290288382.html?srcSns=sns_Copy&spreadType=socialShare&bizType=ProductDetail&social_params=20003366658&tt=MG&aff_platform=default&sk=_m0oit81&aff_trace_key=a4b124c63cfa43e7bbf8b7133c738f22-1607833642789-08940-_m0oit81&shareId=20003366658&businessType=ProductDetail&platform=AE&terminal_id=46b8892cf05c41029646ac769f924417&gatewayAdapt=glo2deu) but it may not be perfect. I think so far NO ONE HAS CARED ENOUGH to find the correct polarizer film. That's what I mean when I say this writeup I'm doing is a lot of work. I am researching polarization film technology and thinking what other devices like graphing calculators I could salvage the film from.
I feel pretty satisfied to
a. know that I'm not the only one who's actually upset about backlight superiority evangelists
b. know that many kings in the retro game scene heard my point today
so I can accept that maybe this is just part of being an aging 90's baby. I have a disease where I think non backlit screens are fucking awesome and _special_ and somehow more in harmony with _nature_
Which of you curled the money paw on that Ubi/SquareSoft sale? I think they own the City of Montreal now?
https://www.polygon.com/23053137/square-enix-embracer-eidos-crystal-dynamics-tomb-raider
Crystal Dynamics is such a great "nothing" name. It could be a band, it could be a game studio, it could be a tech 2.0/3.0 company, it could be an optical fabrication business, it could be a movie title, it could be the name of @treefroggy's youtube channel about crystal-clear GameBoy Advance displays... 😋
The Eidos/CD sale is truely cursed, https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1521017861803704321
@“穴”#p67690 Ok, maybe we can‘t afford Ubisoft, but surely we could’ve afforded Tomb Raider and all of those studios Square Enix just sold if we had just beaten Embracer to it.
$300 million for all that? Embracer must be pissing themselves laughing.
The entirety of Eidos was sold for less than ten Sheffields. Just for context, Microsoft is said to have paid $100M for only one year of exclusive Tomb Raider in 2015.
Are we talking about Yuji Naka’s recent news anywhere? I don’t recall old school Japanese devs ever bashing each other this hard
