(Archived 2022) The thread in which we talk about games we are currently playing

@dylanfills#32709 YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE (minor mention of potential to be spoiled but no actual spoilers)

I guessed major plot points from both of these games, and still had the same satisfaction from Gone Home and dissatisfaction from Edith Piaf's Whacky House

Wow, thanks for all the responses around my offhand question. The way ya‘ll describe Edith Finch makes me pretty wary of it, knowing my own tastes – & honestly, it’s a strangely good feeling to scrub a game from the “I'll get around to this someday” list in these extremely saturated times. Also, I just realized that not only are they both “walking simulator” narratives about exploring houses, they‘re both published by Annapurna, which also helps excuse how mushy they got in my head. Also also, I’m pretty sure I auditioned for VO in Edith but did not get it, so that's a good 4-years-later salve

RE: game we're playing, I _finally_ got Earth Defense Force 4.1 last night & played the first few missions. Here's what I will say so far: Big Cavia Energy

@tokucowboy#32748 YES I LOVE THE “I can write this off now” FEELING

I 100%‘d Skyward Sword. It’s been the only game I've had the energy to play for three months. Thoughts:

  • - Despite motion control imprecision, I LOVE the act of swinging the remote to swing your sword, and of jerking the nunchuk to raise your shield. Even if you‘re more waving the wiimote like a conductor’s baton than a sword, the physicality of it is just so engaging. I booted up BotW right afterward, whose motion controls for aiming are such an improvement on its predecessor's, and just immediately bumped up against the dull swordplay again. Combat is one of the worst things about BotW, but one of the best things about Skyward.
  • - It still also holds your hand for everything, wastes seconds of your time with every "new" treasure pickup after a fresh game boot, and is still rarely challenging even on hero mode (once you've relearned how to play a Wii game).
  • - The impressionist brushstroke filter for depth of field blur looks to be missing from every shot of the HD remaster I've seen, and I'm sad because they were so successful at evoking that style here in the original. Even the environment textures make use of colour theory employed by the Impressionists, by using starkly contrasting colours to push out others.
  • - Groose is still the best. I love a jock with a heart of gold. Groose and the boys as the Body Improvement Club from Mob Psycho 100.
  • The past month and a half have been a lot and I've burned thru a bunch of stuff

  • -

    Outer Worlds

Went with safety inspector that was good at the gab. I ended with a max of 20 in any combat stats and literally rushed thru the last stage. Also hit level cap way before getting to the last few main quests which, yeah I had done like, every side quest, but that‘s something I just cannot abide by. If there’s levels I don't care if I grossly outclass bosses in the endgame, i still have a good time. Gimme those lil dopamine hits with numbers.

    Nier Replicant
Sad Times WooooooOOoO. I did not grow flowers or do any serious fishing but did get thru ending E and boy did ending E freaking rule. It reminded me of this Jacob Geller video "[Saving the Best for Last](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8n2DHiGp8E)". Also as soon as you unlock wardrobe changes put Emil in the samurai outfit cause he's so cute in it and I love him and he's my baby boy.

    It Takes Two
Played this with my partner and GOSH what a really delightful game. Like I was not expecting something so good. Its some of the best feeling platforming I've had in a LONG time, movement feels so good in it. The change ups to style and moving around feel good. Only real complaint was that the ending felt like it came out of nowhere. We were both expecting at least a few more chapters. But still, really good time and I want to play it with other friends cause it was just that fun.

  • Now I'm playing thru the Dishonored series since I got the full Arkane collection for super cheap. Though I am bouncing back to World's End Club, which is a nice lil roadtrip type thing that's a real nice reverse take on the "everyone has to die and everyone suffers." Has some real goonies/attack the block vibes, but could still go sideways so we'll see.

At this point all my gaming is happening in big bricks post work cause a lot is going on so I'm moving like molasses through anything that I want to actually chew on and really consider, but burning through games that are just buttercream cause lizard brain.

@connrrr#33180 Glad you mentioned the background rendering of that game. I quite enjoyed Skysord and the many creative choices they made. I was even immune to the overworld controversy. My main complaints were exactly what you said, and those weren‘t new to Skysord, they were problems with practically all video games of the time, especially Nintendo’s. But the lack of overworld seems like not a big deal when the dungeons and town were designed so well. To me, it's more honest, rather than pretending to be some epic open world experience. They already failed in comparison to ICO And Shadow of the Colossus, so just lean into what Nintendoes.

@“treefroggy”#p33529 What did open worlds even look like on the Wii? All I can think of is Santa Destroy. The machine just couldn't handle the genre (and neither could its contemporaries rofl).

I remember, when I still watched Game Grumps, Barry doing a video on what he'd do to improve Skyward and I think it came down to making the clouds whiter or some shit? There were a lot of dumb, thin arguments for why people took issue with the game from back then. Just have to put up with the noise generated by the audience Nintendo cultivates, I suppose.

@“connrrr”#p33604 l love Santa Destory. It made me sad when dumb gamers of the time complained about that too! And what happened next? They removed the overworld from No More Heroes 2! I haven't even played NMH2 yet because I love the first game so much I want to finish 100%'ing it first!

Also, it helps that I live in the city Santa Destroy seems to be parodying: Santa Monica!

@“treefroggy”#p33682 I think the punk thing to do would have been to lean even more into the open world with the sequel to rile up those hobgoblins.

Well I hadn‘t planned to pick up that new Ratchet & Clank but I succumbed to the hype just before release and took advantage of a trade in deal at my local EB. Glad I did because all the buzz is justified. It’s fun to play, nothing special gameplay wise, but the graphics are so, so nice. It really looks a helluva lot like, maybe not a recent Pixar, but an Illumination movie? Seriously impressive and a cool experience. Makes me excited for future games using this technology to its full extent since this is practically a launch title.

@“goonbag”#p33714 I come across EB games while googling games sometimes, and it blows my mind because they're (as far as I know) bought out entirely by GameStop in the US.

@"grohac"#p33267 I read this as "butt-cream lizard brain" which is my new band name

    @"treefroggy"#p33529
@"connrrr"#p33604 I am definitely a bit too Nintendo (especially Zelda) fanatical to have ever had objective opinions about SS, which I didn't love, but I am willing to give it another shot when they put it on switch.

That said, I personally felt like Twilight Princess (another game that I have zero objective perspective towards) had a really cool psuedo-open world. I loved the horse riding and slapping guys on horseback and then backflipping off and stabbing those freaks. It felt to me like there were hours of secret spots and heart containers and random just junk and weird underground fishing holes all over the place. I would say the same as Wind Waker, but TP just felt a lot more densely populated, whereas WW feels to me more like pockets of cool spots that punctuate sailing (which I liked about one third as much as the TP horse-riding).

I also LOVED the combat in TP (which I've only ever played with a controller) with all the hidden scroll moves.

I have been playing through several indie story centric games and, real quick

  • - Lydia - Wild story, very little "game," well worth it
  • - Subsurface Circular - Just dialogue that feels INCREDIBLY well contextualized (also done by the Thomas Was Alone people (a game I did not like))
  • - The First Tree - no. Just don't. Unless you like running around as a fox with awful controls. Ok story, but just way too long for the plot content
  • - Soul Searching - YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHH RAFT SAILING AND MAGIC BUTTERFLIES
  • On a whim gave Shining Force a try (never played it) and found myself really enjoying it. My understanding is the II is better-regarded so looking forward to that. I like how tight and forward-moving the gameplay loop is. Not much slack in the design. Battles, rpg town stuff, walking around the world map - all done from the same perspective, interface, controls. You could leave town and a battle will kick off, the music switches to the battle theme, then when it’s over the music just switches back and you’re walking along. Maybe not describing it well, but it’s very seamless and coherent

Yeah, EB is the major game retailer in Australia, they still operate in NZ and Canada too. As far as I can tell they're exactly the same as Gamestop. Usually overpriced but sometimes the trade in deals are good and they have some good preowned prices when they have a sale.

After many failed tries due to losing my save file, I am finally going to beat Goemon‘s Great Adventure once and for all! I’ve had this game since 2nd grade, and it was my first introduction to Japanese culture. My friends and I peed our pants laughing because of this game. Nostalgia be damned, this is a highly underrated game for N64, easily the best platformer along with Mischief Makers and Kirby 64, possibly better than either of those because it plays fast and hard, because it‘s very much a classic konami style platformer! right now I’m in the third world. I think I got up to world 4 in the past, we will see. I‘d love to be streaming this, but the capture card I got isn’t working, so screw it! I‘m also so good at the game I’ve got a perfect run going where I've gotten all entry passes and extra lives without dying once!

What is this, a graduate school seminar?

(This is a joke about imposter syndrome and the widespread underreported mental health crisis among graduate students of all stripes. Thank you and have a good day)

    @“treefroggy”#p33881 but does it have…

    PURASUMAAAA

how do we feel about mass effect around here. im playing it it's pretty good!

@“tapevulture”#p33946 I remember liking ||Thane|| when I first played it, and I probably still would, but good lord the cutscene direction when he's total recall-ing stuff is over the top.

@“captain”#p33963 lmao just had my first one of those

the first one is pretty good but the series gets really bad after that. The gamer tantrum re the ending of 3 was pathetic but the ending was kinda wretched. I mean I expected it to be hacky but it really is very poor
