(Archived 2025) Having a very normal morning on this very normal day.

When I was growing up in Baltimore we always just drank the tap water, but then the summer before I left there was apparently a massive water contamination with E. Coli, though I still drank the tap water anyways. My mom was very worried about it though. She says it has happened several times since then, so she’s given up on tap water permanently even when it’s not nominally contaminated. Based on some googling, I’m pretty sure this is just her being paranoid. She posts on all those apps like nextdoor, which I’ve never used, but I suspect might be filled with fear mongering.

In Shanghai the general advice is to not drink the tap water without boiling it first, though I’m not sure how much of this just comes from the general Chinese propensity against drinking cool/room-temperature water. Most newish construction has separate faucets for drinking water, but I live in an older building without any of that.

I drink tap water but I filter cause it smells like chlorine

I love tap water. I drink it every day. Having reliably clean water is a vital modern miracle that is often taken for granted.

I drink tap water and haven’t had a cavity in over 15 years.

I also am a gay frog.

UFO update - it has been theorized for the past couple years that super bowl commercials feature aliens and flying saucers as part of a “soft disclosure” strategy to acclimate the public to the impending revelation. So now the Totino Pizza Roll commercial with Tim Robinson is part of UFO disclosure

Phoenix tap water is disgusting. You can get a reverse osmosis setup though, to turn it into something drinkable.

when i lived there, florida tap water was horrible. michigan had good water. 'course, i wasn’t in flint. remember that? the state basically took away democratic representation from the people of flint, put an unelected manager in there to slash budgets, and he poisoned everyone’s water? crazy.

But he said he really needed a glass of water and it wasn’t a stunt.

i know many of you view me as an impossibly clear headed individual with a sweeping view of the historical landscape who soberly observes our current trajectory as a matter of fate…but even i have to admit i’m taken aback by how brazen things can be sometimes.

for instance, i’m thinking of elon musk in the white house today talking about some bullshit with his stupid ugly little kid followed by his “based billionaire” hedge fund buddies saying “yeah we actually should gut the entire federal government.”

these things would be bad enough on their own of course but what makes it feel worse and different is it feels like no one is there to stop them? the democrips are ineffectual, the last decade has been spent stacking the courts in the rebloodlicans favor, and the “protest movement” is too scattershot and fatigued to gain any material foothold. this is not unprecedented in world history, but i am increasingly concerned and upset that my life and the lives of my loved ones are caught in “the bad part” of that undulating arc.

yes the consequence of dismantling the New Deal is that everyone has to do the Great Depression and labor movement yet again

We would not have come out of the great depression with out two world wars desiccating European manufacturing for for 50 years so I guess we have to hope for that too.

Hey guys, let’s please refrain from posting images of Jonestown (or any tragedies with real victims). Let’s keep our discussions here thoughtful and mindful of others.

There’s a lot of really bad things happening all the time, but it’s crazy that Elon Musk is just in the white house every day now. A textbook example of adding insult to injury. I quit X (the everything app) because of him, but he’s determined to worm his way into my life every day anyway

Alright but to be clear Jonestown people were under corrective control to drink the coolaid while heavens gate were told that they in no way had to follow them and believed they were going to a ufo making their deaths not exploitative. I grew up on a death cult (nowhere to the degree of these two) need to make that clean and I’m not writing this in disagreement to your moderation which I understand

Thanks for understanding the moderation. I appreciate you sharing your background and differentiation between Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate in terms of coercion and belief structure Discussing it as an allegory is one thing, but sharing photos of the aftermath falls under the type of unwelcome/shock content in our guidelines.

Just as a reminder to everyone, we all have different tolerance levels when it comes to dark humor or ruminating on the decline of things, so please be mindful of others reading the thread. None of us want to be subjected to this political spectacle, and this is a shared space to discuss current events with people we share common interests with. The last thing any of us want to do is upset each other, so please use your discretion. We’re all in this together.
