I feel bad for being so negative lately, I’m gonna reel it in. Calling LTT the fox of tech news is kind of harsh haha

I feel like @“treefroggy”#p155561 ‘s forum step mom pleading 『I don’t want you hanging around that bad egg @“yeso”#385 anymore! That lil’ punk and his negative manners are a bad influence on you!』as he slams down his bedroom’s door with a big DANGER HAZARDOUS WASTE sign taped onto it.

GOTY Balatro has been pulled from a bunch of digital stores after a ratings board changed it from 3+ to 18+. This is due to containing "gambling imagery".

I guess all the new Super Mario Bros game on DS should be 18+ due to this minigame too: https://mario.wiki.gallery/images/1/1a/SM64DS_Picture_Poker.png

@“beets”#p155606 I guess all the new Super Mario Bros game on DS should be 18+ due to this minigame too:

Yes, they should (this mini-game first appeared in Super Mario 64DS, I believe). The rules changed circa 2008-2009 due to some claim from Greece. PEGI ratings are not retroactive but a remake or HD Remaster would likely need to remove this mini-game.

This is why most new games and remakes post-2009 don’t include proper casinos. See: the fate of [Game Corners](https://www.thegamer.com/pokemon-game-corners-removed-gambling/#:~:text=At%20the%20time%20Diamond%20and,standards%20for%20rating%20had%20changed.) in Pokémon, recent DQ releases getting their casinos either nerfed or removed entirely, etc.

Frankly, the L is entirely on publisher Playstack. I don’t know if they applied via IARC or specifically for local ratings (PEGI/ESRB etc.) but this game should have aimed for a 12+ rating to release in Europe. That’s the lowest you can hope for with games emulating or using the rules of gambling card games.

Or, they cynically knew this was going to happen and used the limited "3+ rating" time they had to be featured on more communication channels until they got caught (and get a another marketing buzz from the catch). But I don’t think this was a planned stunt, given the wording of their PR.

joke replies:

  • - I can fix him
  • - you're not my real mom
  • - Ever since you moved in dad hasn't been the same
  • - I'm going to aunt suzie's
  • needless clarification reply:
definitely not yeso's fault or have anything to do with yeso, really. they already carry the heavy burden of being the funniest one and already have a heavy conscious-- my contrast of being pure as the driven snow shouldn't cause that weight to become any greater than it already has. I'm just checking myself!

I once had a roommate with a stencilled sign posted to their bedroom door that read “be vulnerable or fuck off.”

Thanks for turning me onto this one, hot new _Nintendo Power_ issues from the year 2005. Fewer thanks to Youtube and Gamers for spoiling the ending of _FF7 Rebirth_ in a thumbnail 4 days after it came out when I searched up the name of a completely different video game.

@“2501”#p155823 getting closer to that Knights in the Nightmare remake!

    Citra too

maaaan. 3ds modding is like essential to even being able to play so many games! RUSTYS REAL DEAL BASEBALL FOREVER!

you know nintendo themselves could have prevented this entire thing if they just made more powerful consoles

Holy moly this is tragic. Not Citra!!! Yuzu may have flown a bit close to the sun with the way they handled patreon but Citra is an innocent child!

All this stuff is open source, so I'm sure it's not the end, but this will definitely have a chilling effect on a lot of the work that was being done on both platforms for a while. Once again, Nintendo and the games industry does not understand what's good for it. Emulation creates fans for life. Were I to only grow up with a PS2, I may never have given Nintendo games a shot. When I was broke young adult, emulating games was the only way to keep my interest in this hobby. Now that I have disposable income, the games I emulate translates directly into money in their pocket. Having just emulated Ufouria, I was excited to spend money on Ufouria 2 on the electronic shop. But I'll happily spend that money elsewhere.

Emulation does not equal lost sales. Quite the opposite!

i feel like they are saying something even more evil after doing it one day after the switch's 7th birthday.

It's not even over yet and could get worse. The judge has to rule on the final judgment which, depending on how that goes, could set a precedent for future emulators as Luke at Aftermath has pointed out. From Fast Company:

“Developing or distributing software, including Yuzu, that in its ordinary course functions only when cryptographic keys are integrated without authorization, violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s prohibition on trafficking in devices that circumvent effective technological measures because the software is primarily designed for the purpose of circumventing technological measures,” the court document reads.

    @“connrrr”#p156045

can anyone explain to me how enforceable this is considering it's coming out of a settlement, not a trial?

@“SlumWolf”#p156050 Not a lawyer. But “Very”.

Yeah I have no dog in this fight ethically or whatever but idk how Yuzu’s case was expected to stand up in court given that for better or worse copyright laws exist in this country and their “product’s” clearly intended purpose was helping to break them.

A great article about the new Jeff Minter collection, with a mention of someone dear to the forum
