(Archived) Extra Extra Gamer News in 2024 AD

I also went looking around at the developers background and their “about us” says they want to treat the project with respect but it’s not like there’s a precedent we can go on

we’ll have to wait and see i guess

i agree with all of this but the cynic in me kinda trusts Muriel Tramis and some history nerds in the 80’s/90’s and more than a “modern gamer”

while we are on the topic gonna plug in a great article on Freedom: Rebels in the Darkness by Phil Salvador

An amazing article about the state of Nintendo in the UK in the late 80s, advertising and the wonder that was Rik Mayall

And Boots is a pharmacy chain, think CVS but each receipt isn’t made out of a single tree.

the thing is though that it’s not “a” real “guerilla” movement, it’s clearly about the EZLN and its communities in Chiapas so we ought to respond to the specificity the game is taking on itself. Portraying that as a campaign of guerilla warfare is just not accurate and a disservice to the subject because the EZLN has engaged in very little armed conflict

idk if chesty lady contra with bloody spiked bat and caged Mayan meets this goal lol

Yeah. And count also that including what you said, there is also the effect that would get rage from several sides or even that the game might get the “Wolf of Wall Street” syndrome.

I had an early pitch idea for a videogame that was a graphic adventure/visual novel about a young nazi that ends up being more and more in despair (think about the film “Come and see” or the airport scene in one CoF: Modern Warfare) and a colleague told me to drop it because gamers either wouldn’t be interested or wouldn’t get it.

Apart from the Chiapas game, this one also looks good: Mexico, 1921. A Deep Slumber. on Steam

As a history nerd, this soothes my soul.

The Xbox show had some interesting new stuff. 2025 seems like it will be a great year for gaming.

South of Midnight - Cajun character action game, the stop-motion going into 60fps action is a little weird but I’m into it.

Mixtape - 80s teen slice of life game.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - an turn-based action command jrpg set in a twisted apocalyptic france

Wu Chang Fallen Feathers - it’s hard to keep track of all these souls games but it looks nice

Microsoft Flight Sim seems to be leaning into having scenarios, with emergency situations, crop dusting, wildlife photography, and shuttling around rich people to exotic locations.

and of course the announcement everyone was waiting for…

Starfield DLC

I’m definitely interested in South of Midnight, Clair Obscur, and Wuchang. There was more to look forward to in that showcase than I was expecting

We also finally got a little more of the new Dragon Age (with actual gameplay on Tuesday):

I don’t think this trailer’s going to light the world on fire, but Dragon Age games have historically have middling to bad trailers, I suppose. I’m not sure how I feel about the new art style—it feels like a much stronger departure from previous games than any of the others have felt from their predecessors. That’s to be expected with such a long time between Inquisition and now, though

can’t wait to see the streamer-friendly music they’ll have to come up with for mixtape

Yeah I’m not sure how I feel about this trailer, I get that they want us to care about the characters, and the characters are a big focus point for the series, but I feel like I need to understand more about the stakes of the world and see what the gameplay will actually look like. I think I last played a dragon age game in about 2009, so I definitely need something to feel more grounded in that world.

Yeah, I’m honestly not entirely sure of their marketing angle on this one. I’m sure it’ll work well enough for the Dragon Age diehards like myself, but this one needs to take off in a big way for Bioware—most especially in a post-Baldur’s Gate 3 world. I’m not sure the angle here is going to grab people who aren’t super invested in the series and/or Bioware more generally, let alone anyone new to it

I do seem to remember that they’ve done these “character reveal” trailers in the past, so I’m sure there will be more in the months to come, but this doesn’t feel like the shot in the arm the game needs marketing-wise to me

Yeah, it’s funny how much it’s trying not to look like a CRPG. Clearly when they started working on it pre-Baldur’s Gate 3 they wanted to distance themselves from that style. It all seems to just be tight shots and quick cuts, honestly hard to follow.

For what it’s worth, I thought Avowed’s trailer did a better job of showing off what I imagine Dragon Age 4 would look and feel like playing, except in 3rd person.

Bioware games usually have a really dense through-line of lore and worldbuilding which makes jumping into it from scratch feel intimidating. Plus I remember that Dragon Age Inquisition was highly lauded and celebrated and a friend of mine was really into it, maybe I should check out that one first.

This was the first Avowed showing that actually got my attention, really. Up until now they hadn’t shown me anything that I thought I would like, but I’m going to keep an eye on it now. I always struggle with Obsidian’s writing, though, so it’ll still be a wait and see…

As for Dragon Age, they’ve not really been “proper” CRPGs since Dragon Age II—the series today has more in common with the Mass Effect series than it does with Origins or Bioware’s earlier RPGs. So, I’m not especially surprised by that (and based on what we’ve heard of the gameplay so far, it seems like there’s going to be even more Mass Effect in this one)

But, if you’re thinking about playing Veilguard, I’d highly recommend playing Inquisition first. This one is far more of a direct sequel to Inquisition (and its DLC, especially Trespasser) than the other games in the series have been, with a returning antagonist and other characters, so I’d imagine it’ll be worth it to play through (and it’s pretty good, even if it’s not my favorite of them)

all that’s been announced is an expensive asian english physical release afaik, but it is better than 0.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gets its convoluted premise across really well in the trailer and I never would have expected a game that looks like that to have what appears to be turn-based combat.

Before they featured the turn-based combat, the goblin part of my brain thought, “Oh, Clair Obscur is like Forspoken.” The blurb on their website describes it as “an evolution of JRPGs,” language that curiously echoes one way to see Forspoken.

It looks interesting, but I’m definitely going to have a reflexive tendency to compare this one to Forspoken.

Expedition 33 was the big surprise of the show to me. It looks cool!!

But I have to admit I’m more excited for more modern Doom. To those people who called 2016 and Eternal “Doom-flavored Quake games”, we now have a Quake-flavored Doom-flavored Quake game.
