Backlog Art Club Challenge

Here’s a little personal tradition of mine:

Whenever I beat/hit credits on a game, I try not to move on to something new until I draw something based on it.

Since I draw for a living, it’s a good way for me to make sure I still make art for fun outside of work, since the vast majority of my downtime is spent with games.

I thought it’d be fun if some other folks joined in, regardless of skill level. Let’s make a challenge out of it.

Here’s a few rules/guidelines:

-Don’t get too hung up on the artwork being good. Just draw for fun and have fun sharing it. Anything from a doodle on a napkin, to an elaborate oil painting is welcome.

-This isn’t a critique club, (unless someone specifically asks for feedback) we’re only sharing this art as a silly alternative way to look back on stuff we’ve played.

-Try to stick to the rule of submitting art of a game you’ve recently finished. This isn’t strict, but I find it makes the ‘challenge’ a little less overwhelming. It’s also a nice send-off for something you’ve recently finished.

-Other forms of visual art are welcome too! Not just drawing. 3D, sculpture, photography.

-Please, no generative AI.

-You don’t need to post an image to join in on the thread. Feel free to comment on each others submissions, or discuss the games that are brought up!

I’ll start: Last thing I beat was Hi-Fi Rush. Despite not liking a bunch of the music in it, I adored it.

Played through Jumping Flash again the other day, so of course I couldn’t resist the urge to draw more rabbits!

are posts in the “what i’ve been playing thread” considered an art form?

I knew it’d only take 2 posts before we start discussing what counts as visual art lol.

Sure, why not. Maybe put a frame around it!

Oops. I instantly fell behind on this despite claiming it as my responsibility. Behind by like 5 games. I’ve animated this one to make up for it.

Warioware Move It is good! My partner and I played through the whole thing twice.

I finished Final Fantasy 6 for the first time. I have nothing to add to the conversation. It is good.

Here’s a bonus version with some music and a background stuff:

Got around to actually finishing Tears of the Kingdom. It’s good! And it’s probably got my new favourite design for Ganondorf.

I like to do this too when I finish a game that I like. I made this Tunic piece after finishing Tunic in december and started painting before xmas and finished this yesterday.

I sometimes do this when I feel inspired by a game. I doodled a thumbnail for a VA-11 Hall-A piece when I finished it in December 2023 and then only started the actual piece a few months ago. I’ve been coming back to it and fighting with it ever since cause I just can’t seem to make the lighting work and I am determined to futz with it until I’m at least a little satisfied.

Finally called it quits on this one so here’s my VA-11 Hall-A piece. This game made me Feel Things. I love being surprised by the writing in a videogame.

It’s interesting that Jill has so much character, but spends like 95% of conversations talking about the other person. They manage to convey her character through her responses to other people’s stories. Neat! I’m really looking forward to .45 Parabellum Bloodhound.

I kinda hate this drawing, but hey, I can move on now.
