CLIVE-A-ƎVI⅃Ɔ: Final Fantasy XVI(⅃Ɔ) Release Thread (TAG ALL SPOILERS)

@“Jaffe”#p121172 Which Final Fantasy protagonist would make for the hottest fling and which one would treat you the best as a long term partner?

@“Jaffe”#p121172 first time asker thanks Jaffe. There are a few outlets, pre and post-release, compare Final Fantasy 16 to Devil May Cry. Just wanted to know what you guys think about that comparison.

@“Jaffe”#p121172 Did people really want to play a poor man’s God of War (2018) that much?

Glad to know the dev team agrees with this comparison. At least, the game and many of its decisions suddenly make sense to me now.

another question for the show:

did you think it was it cool when the guy said the "F" word?

What is Final Fantasy XVI?

Does the Active Time Lore System (ATL system) render traditional turn-based lore systems obsolete?

@“Tradegood”#p121368 is this like the Active Time Event system from FFIX??

@“connrrr”#p121369 No unfortunately, it's basically the datalog from FFXIII except they went a little overboard writing unique entries that can be viewed during cutscenes and describe exactly what is happening.

@“Tradegood”#p121370 wow that looks like complete shit

Glad ff7r2 is the real final fantasy

@“Reverse Kaiser”#p121371 that's a funny way of abbreviating Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

calling your game’s fiction “lore” is humiliating lol

@“Reverse Kaiser”#p121371 I think that feature is pretty well implemented. It takes advantage of most cutscenes running in-engine (so it’s available at almost anytime); the entries are updated based on an intricate flag system that modifies their contents anytime new important information has been revealed; it never gives you more than 5 or 6 things to check out at any moment.

In the base camp, there is a NPC that allows you checking all entries, including former versions of the entries you may have missed. You mileage may vary on how well the entries are written (translated) and how interesting the whole story turns out to be, but I gather that is not the feature’s fault. FF13 (which shares a lot with FF16) had a similar feature, just less well implemented.

@“◉◉maru”#p121387 in wild arms 3 you could press a button to immersively interrogate about certain topics in the middle of conversation and asking the right thing might destabilize the villain mid-monologue or you could miss the chance to inform yourself or make any comebacks otherwise. It was inconsequential but the forward momentum built tension and felt good.

I am at peace with FF16 now that I understand what it attempted to become. The combat system has a bunch of cool ideas. The world design reminds me of Majula. Some characters are likable. The rest is pretty mediocre, but there’s always next time. Maybe they’ll turn FF17 into a medieval TPS, or an Open World action RPG a la Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. I think this below is a great review of the game.

@“phylaxis”#p121197 similarly, what is the soul of a final fantasy game?

Final Fantasy as a franchise to me feels like it is now on a similar spot to where the Resident Evil games were on the 2005-2012 era. Just all over the place trying to incorporate action and spectacle at all costs over the foundation of what the games used to be, slowly losing their signature flavor along the way. Here's hoping to a future Final Fantasy that does what Resident Evil 7 did to its respective heritage.

And if nothing else, we'll still have games like Fantasian, Triangle Strategy or Octopath Traveller, which capture the vibes of a FF game a lot better than the last couple mainline entries.

the unfortunate difference is FFXVI is getting great reviews so there‘s no real incentive for the FF people to rethink the course they’re on

I‘m not too worried about the future of Final Fantasy. I’m unhappy with the fact they are making it a “AAA Third Person Action Adventure Game”, but I think FF has always tried to chase the ‘moment’ since FF1 was a Dragon Quest clone. I don‘t care for the new genre, but it interests me more than their MMO efforts. Obviously anyone looking at sales or critical reception from quote-unquote institutions like metacritic or The Game Awards will see that more “classic” games like SMT V or Dragon Quest XI aren’t in the zeitgeist like Elden Ring or God of War, so it‘s not surprising that Square is chasing what’s popular.

I think Final Fantasy has tried to incorporate action and spectacle over the foundation of what the games used to be ever since Final Fantasy VIII... and it's because they were chasing their own success. FF8 felt like a bigger betrayal of what Final Fantasy represents then 16, to me personally. At least this one has a decent progression system and story... even though the party system is a massive letdown. But I think after every FFVIII is a FFIX for better or worse. And for every FFXVI there is a FF7R2. We're never going back to what we think FF 'was', but instead every game will be a chimera (or a Gorgimera if you will) of the new and old as the series keeps reinventing itself forever.

What we consider classic final fantasy design has always lived on as The After Years on PC or Final Fantasy Dimensions for mobile or Four Heroes of Light for 3DS... but the audience that wants those games didn't buy those games or follow them to those platforms, so I think old square (rightly or wrongly) thought they are too fickle to cater to. It's a bit of a chicken and egg thing since those games epitomize mediocrity and it's foolish to think people who emulate old games will want to play a 30 hour game on their phones. But anyone who is watching what square has been doing since 2018 will see that they have a better grasp on nostalgia lately. They understand the potential of releasing a Trials of Mana or a Star Ocean 6 each year instead of moonshot once-in-a-generation Forspoken... it's better for the fans and better for their pocketbook (and I say this as a forspoken liker). I think its just a matter of time before they do that with a new Final Fantasy. The fact that there's a FFIX remake on the way (presumably with a scope similar to something like Persona 3 remake) is a sign that they are more amenable to that idea now then ever before. The future of classic final fantasy and RPGs is bright, but it probably won't end in an integer.

I think people need to accept we will never quite have a run like FFIV-FFX ever again, where all resources go into creating that style of games. Instead Final Fantasy will be a cipher for Square to interpret the zeitgeist... at least until there is a change in leadership who decides the series should stop making money. There was a freaking Final Fantasy Battle Royale game that came out. There was a Final Fantasy gatcha game that came out. No one cared because they weren't marketed as much or had as big of budgets. I think the next step of enlightenment is to let go of the conception of a 'final fantasy mainline game' entirely, and instead just enjoy each game for what they are.

For the Japanese speakers around here (or people trying to study with a familiar topic of discussion), this “no spoilers conversation” from two IGN staff members who had just cleared the game is pretty interesting too.

@“Tradegood”#p121434 you‘re right of course (except about IX being better than VIII) and it seems like in retrospect it may have been tech limitations that prevented earlier games becoming too “cinematic” and allowing some space for atmosphere and imagination. Those qualities are just not the priority with FFs 13,15,and 16 where everything is over-elaborated and ends up feeling small and suffocating. Maybe 16 gets better, but so far it’s more shoebox sized bar go down combat spaces with no sense of a larger world, and it runs kind of shitty on its target platform lol
