CLIVE-A-ƎVI⅃Ɔ: Final Fantasy XVI(⅃Ɔ) Release Thread (TAG ALL SPOILERS)

@“MovingCastles”#p121675 but is Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins a character action game though. People say it’s a souls-like but the combat has more ‘stuff’ in it than a souls game (arguably)

I regretfully haven't played _Stranger of Paradise_ (yet!) and I'd have to maybe think harder about what perhaps makes a _Souls-_like not a character action game (or even if they aren't~1), but, at the very least, I'll probably say that the character action format needs the _stuff_ I think you're referring to, regardless of whether _Stranger of Paradise's_ stuff scootches it into character action territory and out of _Souls-_like territory.

^1 - I think the fact that in the _Dark Soulses,_ the _Bloodborne,_ and the _Elden Ring_, the combat maneuvering is _relatively_ simple on an _individual weapon_ level, and is thus not so fighting game inspired, might disqualify them from character actiondom (and, subsequently, qualify _Sekiro)._ Don't quote me on any of that, though. It's just a thought I have rn.

This is reminding me that I still haven't played Asura's Wrath.

@“MovingCastles”#p121675 Hot take: Souls has to be an action RPG because if it was a character action game it would be a bad one. That‘s why Dark Souls 2 is the best Soulslike and Sekiro is not a Souls game. And at this point I’m willing to go the extra mile and say that calling Nioh a Soulslike is an insult to Nioh.

My head(less)canon is that the Souls MC literally has no ego and uses psychometry to just do whatever he needs to using whatever items he's carrying and whatever head he sticks on his torso. That's why he gets all lore from items, you are literally playing the weapons and spells he's carrying rather than the character.

character action games usually have a stable frame rate

@“Gaagaagiins”#p121679 I‘ll have to reply it again. From memory it seemed more character actioned than soulsey. But I highly recommend it - it’s good fun!

I wonder if there is a character action thread so explore the genre a bit more. Just need a snazzy title.

Can you jump in Final Fantasy XVI?

~(Onimusha???)

if anyone has any contacts at square can you tell them to make ff17 be the first one to finally actually just look 100% like yoshitaka amano's art

I looove character action games (and adjacent games), therefore will probably enjoy this. Not being A True Final Fantasy, not having parties and not stuff, well. After +15 games of parties and whatnot, they can change all they want just this once.

RE: Souls have a bigger emphasis on exploration, rpg-esque builds and bar management and less about fast action and movement/mobility of character action games, Sekiro leans closer to them (worth noting? Its (co)director was a lead in Bloodborne, Ninja Blade and Otogi). Nioh/Wu-long/Strangers are souls-likish in some points (exploration, rpg builds, stamina) and c.a.g in others (fast action, abilities).

Being fighting game-inspired is a common trait but wouldn't say a defining one. I'd argue DMC1 and Platinum games by extension have more regular "action game" feel, and are less about inputs. Not every 3D action game is character action game either (I'd say Asura's Wrath is a cinematic 3D action game, Valkyrie Elysium maaaybe one but not Nier, nor Onimusha).

Are character action games awesome? Is **GOD HAND** one? ~~Is this Devil May Clive?~~ You know it in your heart..!

@“phylaxis”#p121737 seems like the OG final fantasy wish fulfillment is relegated to spin-offs. Hopefully in the “”generations”” to come, square will have the technology to pull off the yoshitaka amano magnum opus swan song game. Similar to my theory of a clay remake of MOTHER, I could see something like that happening another 20-30 years from now, before -all of us amano is deceased

@“◉◉maru”#p121436 For the French speakers around here (or people trying to study with a familiar topic of discussion), a really strong and long argumentation against the many issues of Final Fantasy XVI, from the inconsequential depth of its battle system to its complete misreading of what made Game of Thrones characters interesting.

Two of them end up saying they preferred Stranger of Paradise, which is sure to be a crowd pleaser on this site only.

Reception in French media and social networks has been mainly positive, especially from younger audiences, but way more mixed than in US media. One reason might be localization differences: I recently learned that Cid sounds much more like a conspiracy theorist weirdo in the French version (directly adapted from the Japanese) as opposed to the cool hand luke of the English version.

“As close to a perfect release as we've seen in some time” - Digital Foundry. What the fuck are they talking about, is my playstation broken

@“yeso”#p121807 For years (perhaps a decade+ ?) I have felt like a genuine outsider in not understanding why anyone, anywhere, cares a single thing about and gives any credence to Digital Foundry.

Otherwise seemingly intelligent people just allow their brains to turn to complete goo and ooze right outta their dang ear-holes whenever DF does or says anything and _I just don't get it_.

I feel like I have the glasses from _They Live_ and everyone else just _can't see it_.

they‘re literally advising to keep the game in quality mode and not switch to performance, so you can trick your brain into accepting 30 fps lol. Incredible technical achievement but hey you need to psychologically manipulate yourself into thinking it’s good

https://youtu.be/_Oyjldkh5kE?t=1674

Well, performance mode sure is underwhelming for its targeted audience but, going by the development complications of 12, 13, 14 and 15 (although I guess 13 was mainly complicated because of 12), I’d argue one have to tip their hat to BU3 for releasing a new mainline Final Fantasy in a reasonable amount of time, at a likely reasonable budget, and performing reasonably well (in the standard “quality” mode) on its targeted hardware.

I think the objective of being "reasonable" all around played a big role in sticking to PS5 rather than aiming for simultaneous PS4 and/or PC versions. Same goes for details such as not bothering to lipsync in languages other than English.

We did a good episode! Looking forward to releasing it next week

@“◉◉maru”#p121842 I don’t mean to be unkind to the labor that made the game - I think it’s a poor decision to try for visual complexity that’s imo counterproductive. But they’ll sell a billion copies so it was a reasonable calculation on the business unit’s part
