Confession

Once I have traded a weekend rental of Super Castlevania 4 for Bubsy, and that was after playing both games for a while.

@“Hunter”#p142018 i confess that i don't know what this means but liked anyways because you seem mildly passionate

A lot of recent games make me go “ah my eyes, so much colour and action”. It makes me feel like my dad when he tried to play Mario Kart 8 with me and concluded that modern games were too much for him.

@“Hunter”#p142018 Controversy time!? I feel the opposite!

I think with its stagger emphasis XIII's battles were essentially reduced to 2 types of enemies/encounters: those you want to stagger (high HP / slow to kill with default attacks) and those you don't (low HP / faster to kill without having to build gauge). You may optimize your damage output a bit with "raise-but-not-quite-stagger" the first case but don't feel there is much difference, and end up doing whole build-gauge-or-not choice on mental autopilot.

At least LR hides some numbers to let you figure out a bit the better strategy in each encounter, while VIIR just gives you an extra tool to optimize your fights.

(I think Dissidia did something kinda similar but more interesting, where you accumulate power with fast attacks and cash it with a harder-to-hit slow attack)

I once gave out a key to a shareware game (Exile 3) that allowed the other player to play it without buying it. The game was not old, unreasonably priced, or abandonware. I was just talked into it over AOL IM from someone who saw me on the forums.

i‘ve actually redownloaded the twitter app because i enjoy the stuff i follow too much and threads/bsky don’t have all my people on there, but they do have all of the same shit that makes twitter suck. i don't feel good about any of it but i have to point my eyes at something sometimes!

Today's Confession #2: I am susceptible to peer pressure

@“Hunter”#p142018 could have been because i was very engaged with the game, but i think the XVI stagger mechanics are straightforward and fun. what about them flopped for you?

i can't tell from your writeup if you felt this way about VIIR too, or just found it boring, but in VIIR i thought stagger was pretty hard to parse, to the point of needing to watch multiple youtube videos by fighting game people before I understood at a basic level what i was meant to do. and at that point it finally made sense why multiple bosses for me ended up being running in circles endlessly, spamming potions and doing chip damage until they finally died. i feel like i need to start the game from the beginning now that i understand how to play it...idk i'm definitely partly at fault but given that it's a remake of a game that everyone has played 47 times they maybe could have done more to explicitly describe the mechanics given that they are so opposite to the original game. i was playing it like "oh yeah in this part of the slums i can go get this strong weapon and it will carry me for a while even though it has few materia slots" etc

i like stagger in XVI, all the abilities have stagger and damage ratings, so i found it easy to line them up. in particular had a lot of fun chipping down the guage enough to bust it with Diamond Dust, then immediately cast Aerial Blast which does many tiny hits, to passively tick up the damage multiplier, while i am also ticking it up with Gouge, and then end with a high-damage single-hit ability, Judgment Bolt etc. a pretty good modern analogue for the fun of saving all of your spells/MP/limit breaks for the boss and obliterating it in three turns

I just realized that Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and Hi-Fi rush are two separate games

@“captain”#p145907 we called it “Sin”…

No you're not

FF16 stagger mechanic? More like limiting combat options and finding an optimal combat strategy which is implemented ad nauseam on almost every enemy encounter thus trivializing the majority of the game.

That game desperately needs a force ghost of the protagonist's deceased dad screaming smokin-sexy-style!! Everytime you land an epic combo.

Is FF16 character action?

I just read Jim Carrey had a party for his 62nd birthday this week.

This is the first time in my life I've really felt old...

If I can buy a game with or without an obi… I’ll always go without. I ain’t shrink-wrappin that sucker, so what’s the use? Give me my ¥300 back.

I got a copy of Frankenstein for bookclub from Libby and it expires tomorrow so I put my iPad in airplane mode to hopefully keep it.

@“DaveedNoo”#p147424 isn’t that in public domain by now

@“MoH”#p147433 it most definitely is!
