Confession

The big discords kind of just feel like IRC to me. I did a lot of Pokemon IRC back in the day and I had a pattern of big channel into small channel.

There are people who that’s great for and not so much.

I’ve used discord for a long time and it’s been primarily in two servers for playing league of legends and for that it’s been fine.

Trying to join a FC absolutely blows and is a big reason I don’t really play ff14 anymore.

The thing that annoys me about discord is that big scene like mister pretty much moved over there. I understand that it’s good for devs and communication can be much faster than forum but you can’t search stuff from outside and link stuff out gracefully. Tons of tech write ups and knowledge just get buried in mountains of unsorted junk. I find some people abrasive there enough that I kind of lost my enthusiasm for mister a lot…

I’m not very good at social media but I think I have the same problem with discord. Like, I tried popping into Tim’s discord a few times and it’s simply too large with too many people posting too rapidly! It’s like being in a conversation where everyone is speaking at the same time.

the thing about the hyper activity of discord is i don’t understand how it gives anyone time to develop unending grudges or deep-seated resentments

The true rubric for living on the world wide web

Discord definitely varies by server. I am on a private one with a couple hundred people and maybe 60 active users? And that one is a good time. You can mostly keep track of everything if you want to and because its private (you have to support a patreon) I think people are generally well mannered cause they are paying to participate basically. I am on little ones with friends that rarely get any traction for weeks at a time. The big ones I tend to stay out of but I might find a channel that has a reasonable amount of traffic (not too much or too little) and find a place there. It’s definitely easier if you get in on any of them at the beginning because you feel a better sense of place.

I think there’s a scale at which things become unmanageable.
I imagine the scale is far lower than we’d like to think, like 100 or 200 active members. I think part of what makes this forum work is that it’s relatively small, at least in terms of actively contributing users.
I think once you get to 500 active members, it begins to feel like a mob of people talking at once.
But maybe I’m wrong!

I have come to realize that when I say I like Sonic all I really mean is I like Sonic 3&K and Sonic Mania

I voted for Dr. Cornel West. But I did it in a state Kamala Harris had won.

i absolutely loathe discord. very much rewards guys who do not stop posting much like the old IRC days. but it’s also the only place I can stay connected to a japanese phone game I’ve been playing for 11 years now…Monster Strike.

i’ve always wanted to use forums and social media to stay connected with people, but it usually ends up more that I remain as a fly on the wall and don’t say a lot. with twitter being a hellhole that’s how i came back here, just as a place to see more good posting and less doom posting.

however i’ve never stuck out in any forum history. think it’s because when any place has enough people in it i’ll get beaten to the punch for any opinions, find it hard to have a unique take that stirs conversations. i love to follow them and nod along, however. i’ve been doing that for decades. the reason i stuck around for so long is that IC is the only place that shared my tastes. truly was a rare find so long ago, i enjoy the dark comfort of this bar.

I enjoy the “like” button here. I don’t post as much as I’d like, but that button brings the warm and fuzzies.

I think most songs should be less than 3 minutes long, probably closer to 2. Quite often, I’ll be listening to a new song and I’ll think “yeah okay, I get it… that’s enough of that now” and I’ll look at the timer and it will invariably be around 2 mins 20 seconds, and there’s always at least one more minute, sometimes several more of them, where nothing particularly different happens, mostly the same chorus repeated and padded out. I don’t know about you, but I could do without it. If I want to hang out more with it, I can play the song again, I don’t need it to repeat itself for me. Maybe it’s my impatient, musically illiterate brain, maybe I’m just listening to the wrong music, but idk, it happens in all kinds of genres…

I took time in the middle of streaming to post a cool word here last week. :pensive: In my defence, it was a really good one and I didn’t want to forget to post it.

I was the one kid in highschool who earnestly listened to jazz and at one point distinctly held the opinion that a song less than seven minutes long was not going enough places. That’s what being raised listening to side A of Headhunters a lot will do to a person.

At this point I can go both ways.

I snuck a Halo picture into the teabag section of the big tea thread, and no one said anything.

i’m not even sure if this even makes sense to say but…

i love kirby as an aesthetic, and i really like the character itself, but i confess that i have not played a single kirby game.

i think a lot of it has to do with “i’ve missed so much of kirby lore i just don’t know where to start game-wise” paired up with “i don’t have enough time + i have too many games to play to start also playing kirby”.
