16:10 aspect ratios lower than 3440x1440 are perfectly aligned (and look good) fwiw
Another potential bug: in the first story battle of the demo I hit b while on the character select screen, after I had placed only one character, thinking it would remove the character I had already placed and allow me to place someone else, but it instead closed the character select screen and I seemed to be stuck in the pre-battle phase and no buttons did anything (but there were still button pressing noises).
I could only play a little less than an hour this morning, but I’m having a really tasty time with it. The battles are so satisfying! It’s fun to see all the different ways I can use all my ap in a given turn, finally deciding on one way based on a strategic decision about future turns. The character art is incredible and the animations are spectacular. I especially love the transitions out of battle.
I tested and it only happens with mouse and keyboard. When I plugged in a controller everything was fine. Quick video here if it helps.
I’ll add some impressions generally, which I should say are all very positive:
-
I’m finding the battle screen and system and related prompts and visual information to be substantially easier to understand. I remember people brought up having a more clearly demarcated planning stage and I think this has been accomplished. Will add that all the adjustments have not come at the expense of it looking clean + efficient. It all looks neat and integrated

Appreciate the fishing game is designed in such a way not to make you wait for a bite (I personally find fishing games that do that annoying). It’s more like one of those 2 tap golf swing controls I like it. Everything moves pretty snappy in this game so why not the fishing too

Am I correct that there was a change to look of the dialogue boxes as seen below?
I like the compact size and small character portraits. It looks nice like SFC Tactics Ogre
-
This one’s on me but I now understand that during battles you can take more than one action per turn. The game is easier now that this has finally sunk in my thick skull
-
game looks great. A+ job art people. Going to look hot as hell on a OLED switch
-
A+ job to Kurt on the tunes. I think the last time I turned up the volume on a vg soundtrack was like playing the FM synth option on Oath In Felghana or maybe Hotline Miami
Initially had some trouble getting the demo installed on Steam Deck - the download was impossibly small, and gave a ‘missing executable’ error when launching. Deleting and re-installing made no difference.
Fixed it by downloading and then forcing Proton Experimental mode in properties - the game then ‘updated’ itself with a 442MB update that I suspect is what should have downloaded in the first place.
Ah yeah so the impossibly small is because it auto downloaded the linux build which has not been updated yet. We’re gonna update it today. Glad you were able to figure it out!
I tracked down your issue and fixed it o7 well have a new build later today- but yeah this one was mouse only THANK YOU FOR THE REPORT 🩷
we’re working on this mystery now!
@yeso glad it’s working for you - there are still a couple things we’d like to do to make certain parts of the battle easier to parse (walking over danger tiles, how to use/activate special attacks), but it’s getting there!
and those dialog boxes… I’m not sure if they’re new? we’ve had the big ones and the small ones for a while so I’m not sure. the small ones are cool but they make me write shorter lines, which is probably also good lol.
I agree that the music is Pretty Hot. since I didn’t make it I’m allowed to say that.
Just downloaded the demo and will dive in now.
One very minor thing I found:
the green garbage bin in the classroom has no collision (directly after spawning in at the beginning of the demo)
Edit: that actually holds true for all the furniture from the garbage bin to the door.
Unrelated to the collision bug. Love the dialogue:
I’m ready to go back to school
I thiiiiink that’ll be fixed in the next update!
Video games rule. I’m seeing you all actively develop while eating pretzels.
Heck yeah to all this! Looks tremendous all around! About to download the demo to my Deck now and start trying it out.
I encountered a very similiar bug in the classroom right at the beginning after talking to the teacher. I tried to leave the classroom and the A-button didn’t do anything when I stood in front of the door, so I tried the B-button and also nothing happened. When I pressed X, the other characters faded out and I couldn’t move anymore (but no menu opened).
I still hear button input noises, like I’m selecting things in a menu that I can’t see. The start button did open the menu for me but trying to select the option to go back to the main menu did not do anything and now the start button does nothing.
After killing the process and restarting the game I can exit the classroom. I’m not quite sure yet how to reproduce the bug. I’m trying to mash all kinds of buttons but the door works now. Maybe the initial teacher dialogue is cursed somehow, as it seems like yeso also had a problem right afterwards.
(Tested with an Xbox Series Elite 2 controller)
Thanks for these bugs! Some of them are quite confounding.
Oh as a tip to everyone - you can hit Y as a shortcut to get to the map when you’re running around/outside of battle.
Good news: I have something that I can reproduce now! Bad news: it’s not the exact same bug I mentioned before, I think. But possibly related, or might give a clue as to the other bug’s cause.
I just noticed this while checking out the town square:
- Check out the newspaper (press A)
- Press start to open the menu
- Press start again to close the menu
- Close the newspaper window (press B)
- Now you can’t move anymore
Quitting to the main menu and re-entering the game with “continue” fixes the problem.
(Just checked: this also works on the fish info board in the harbor)
thanks, will fix!
OH ALSO. for those of you who complete the demo, I’m curious how long it takes you to do it. this will be helpful for me in terms of gauging how long the entire game is.
This is my third time playing the demo so I’m skipping text, but there seems to be a bug that if you skip thru all the text the next starred event wont load, at least on steam deck.
