Dragon Quest thread

@“treefroggy”#p37326 gosh! I love this so much! It might even be worth me paying a stupid amount of money on a game that I can’t play cos I don’t have a PS1, 2 or 3

@“Punzai”#p37360 I just got this game for $8 bucks, shipped, from japan, from an ebay seller in Japan. If you spend a stupid amount of money on any mainline Dragon Quest games, you got ripped off.

The athletes from the Olympic Games really entered at the opening ceremony stadium by the sound of Dragon Quest theme fanfare

I laughed out loud

God I hate how any time I search for anything DQ related, the algorithm tries to shove these stupid ass videos in my face off the top.

Anyone here discovered any video essays that are…. Not highly negative, knee-jerk reactions?

@“treefroggy”#p39401 I really enjoyed these ones! The other videos these channels upload are really great, too.

For the entire third act, I’ve had synthesized OST turned on. The synthesized vs orchestrated outrage is understandable to a point, but if you can’t handle some midi, you got a dusty butt.

@“Funbil”#p39410 Thanks for the recommends. First video is a breath of fresh air!

GC I've given a shot many times because it's all I could find, and found it a waste of time. It's easy to retell the story and criticize everything along the way. I'm looking insight or deeper analysis, like the Vaati Vidya of Dragon Quest. A tall order, I know. The detail at the very start of the GC video about the juxtaposition of the orange bandana to the world tree is a great example, too bad there's nothing else like it for the rest of the video. Well that's not fair, he does go the heck off comparing the theme of each game in the series from the perspective of family, mostly fatherhood. That was alright.
There's soooo much content and things to say about DQ11, and I feel like no one is going for it, everyone is repeating the same surface level stuff from the first part of the game.... And of all the criticism being repeated time and time again, one thing I haven't heard at all is the lack of 2D character art for this game. Everyone can complain about the music until they're blue in the face, though.

There's so much to be said about the name localization choices, plot details like Erdwin stuff, side stories etc. that no one is touching on. They're all just explaining what Dragon Quest is for general audiences or criticizing gameplay, structural decisions and changes. Maybe the algorithm is to blame. I've watched Timothy Rogers' videos over 3 times apiece now, lol. Watched a couple mildly interesting Sackchief vids where he uses debug mode to take a look at stuff up close.

@“treefroggy”#p39665 That‘s an interesting observation about how a lot of DQ11 videos take the game’s release as an opportunity to tell people about DQ in general. I wonder if it has to do with 11‘s release being so high-profile? Strike while the iron is hot, as they say. I personally know a lot of people whose first DQ was 11 - including me! So I guess a lot of videos are aiming at that demographic, who played (or are at least aware of) 11 and want to know what all this Dragon Questing business is all about. I guess it is kind of a shame when you think about it that way~ but great for people who are seeking a resource like that, which surely is a lot! And who knows, maybe there’s some youtuber doing extensive research right now to release a megavideo going over all those localization differences you‘re alluding to. Surely that’s some channel‘s gimmick somewhere! With a huge, beloved game like Dragon Quest 11, I feel like that kind of a video is more of a “when” than “if” situation. There was a large demographic for people who needed to learn what Dragon Quest even was, but now it’s definitely shifted towards people who already know and want to dig deeper, like you're mentioning. Only a matter of time!

@“tapevulture”#p34734 The 3DS version of VIII has a bunch of these enhancements plus a sizable amount of new content… at the cost of heavily downgraded graphics and (if you’re playing the localized version) no orchestral score.

Definitely one of the higher entries on my “just put out an HD remaster already” list.

@“Funbil”#p39694 Agreed. It is more of a “when”. I just like pointing out when we are ahead of said wave, or when said wave seems to be overdue. The game has been out for a long ass time, although the PC veresion just came out last year.

@"2501"#p39702 I'm firmly planted in DQVIII camp. I gave DQ11 a shot to overcome 8, I truly did, but, there's just so much I like about 8 more. It also helps that I am totally fine with random battles, they stimulate my imagination more. All that said, yeah I don't think I'd be ready to touch the 3DS version until I've played Dragon Quest VIII at least two more times on PS2, haha.

Would broadly agree that VIII > XI although the fact that no clearly definitive version of the game currently exists even though it would be so easy for SquEnix to put out at this point is pretty infuriating

I‘m currently playing through Dragon Quest V on the NDS, and there was an optional story beat in the second act that just really encapsulated why I adore this series so much. BIG SPOILER FOR DQV BELOW (POSSIBLY EVEN IF YOU’VE ALREADY FINISHED IT):

|| after marrying your childhood sweetheart Bianca, you set off on a honeymoon of sorts, visiting your old haunts. You might decide to visit Roundbeck, Bianca's childhood home, or you might skip it entirely. If you do, you'll arrive in town, and memories come flooding back of your adventure together in Uptaten towers. As you walk down the main street, Bianca asks if you can stay the night. You say yes, and head to the inn. After a familiar fade to black, Bianca wakes you in the middle of the night. She can't sleep. She asks to come over. She tells you that she adores traveling with you, and that she really loves you. You drift back to sleep. ||

||No mechanical consequences or rewards, but just a moment of intimacy between two people who miraculously found each other after a decade apart. Something about the juxtaposition with the general tone of the localized dialogue - which can only be described as *jaunty* - somehow makes moments like this all the more affecting.||

||Currently starting the third act, but this is already up there with Chrono Trigger in my personal Best RPGs Of All Time.||

@“2501”#p39743 I think the PS2 version is the definitive one for sure, but don't worry, an HD remaster is inevitable.

@“altdrifter”#p40490 I went with Deborah but I was astonished at how sweet and tender the goofy game about collecting slimes and golems to fight for you could be. It really nails tone through the whole adventure.

@“treefroggy”#p39440 I like the DQ orchestral soundtrack fine but I really don‘t get gamer dudes’ insistence that a non-orchestral soundtrack is inherently inferior. Orchestral music can be cliched and boring too.

@“Fran”#p40604 gotta be the same crowd that leaves “this needs an HD remake!” comments on old games with a cool and unique visual aesthetic

@“tapevulture”#p40610 Seems like the DQIII HD-2D remake is trying to please both crowds but still people bitch about it already after a very brief and early teaser. I miss those days when you only get a taste of upcoming games in a magazine. Much fewer hot takes.

@“Fran”#p40642 yes. i miss magazines in general~

Let‘s remember though that in the days of magazines, stuff like Wind Waker got totally torn to shreds.

Hot takes are good, sounds like whoever is dunking on DQIII prematurely has the dusty takes. Have they even played Dragon Quest III?

It’s tough to have any kind of take on this DQIII remake, cause it kind of looks like what you see is what you get with that one, which is one of the best RPGs of all time, now playable in a different graphical style. If you‘ve played it before on NES, SFC, GBC, you now have another to try. If you’ve never played it before, you're probably in for a treat.
