Dragon Quest thread

Wow, cool, since 2019 you can‘t search for any kind of Dragon Quest Music on youtube without getting 5 unga bunga videos complaining about how the music is bad. Those have aged poorly now that S is out…

I am looking for a list of all the musical themes which were reused from older games. I’ve caught all of them so far I think, but I'm sure I could miss a couple. So far I really liked the inclusion of the orchestrated DQIV battle theme, the DQIII shinto town, and the DQVIII town theme…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqCJqVZcpxU oh my god this song. i vow to finish this game one day

VIII is in a bit of a weird place now that XI exists; the thing with it when I played it was that it was Dragon Quest in gorgeous 3D. But XI does that, and everything else, much better!

@christoffing#29830

Personally, there's still quite a bit that I prefer about eight.

towns in VIII have the DQ town look to them, whereas XI’s have an unreal engine look to them in places.

How is the 3DS version of VIII? Might give that a shot and see if I feel differently about it!

@yeso#29832 Yeah, the landscapes aren‘t looking very Akira Toriyama!

@christoffing I think the PS2 version is better– it was already a perfect game, but on 3DS it has much lower resolution, non-orchestrated music, etc. I don’t see much point to it.

@treefroggy#29835 Well, my PS2 isn't working but my 3DS is, basically.

@christoffing#29840 it certainly doesn‘t beat it in terms of visual fidelity but the 3DS version has a good bit of added content and QoL features. The Alchemy Pot has some QoL features that get into straight up game balance adjusting buff territory, though. I wouldn’t say the new Alchemy Pot is broken but it is definitely way stronger.

Yeah and the new playable characters and endings are really only there for those who plays the heck out of the original.

Play DQ8 on a ps2 emulator, upscaled for a good time! It’s also inevitable that DQ8 will get an HD port

@treefroggy#29853 It’s also inevitable that DQ8 will get an HD port

This would own as a Switch/Switch 2 port

@Syzygy#29662 ooooh the old h e double hockey sticks!

yeah to get the quest checklist item you gotta talk to the ||mermaid town people||. They'll tell you to kill a boss and give you the reward when you do so!

I think I've done everything at this point now?? All that's left is to farm items for forging, or do some time consuming micromanagement to beat the final combat challenges in the game? Or do the Tockington quests...

eh... I think I'll just go to the final boss now :p

I DISCOVERED that I had a map in my important items the entire time!

I am a master of mini medals tho

I also thought about revisiting DQVIII on 3DS or PS2 emulator but seems like 3DS is more possible for my old laptop.

whooo~!!! I beat it! Been playing DQXI since freakin January. Over 4 months and 120 hours later I've finally beaten it!

and I can't believe there's still a whole Tick Tocking quest left in the game, which is likely another 50 hours worth of full-ass game >_<

anywayz, final boss was a beeyotch until I learned there was a gimmick u gotta do to fight him. I also learned how broken Erik with double boomerangs is. Can't believe I spent 100+ hours on this game and never experimented outside of everyone's default weapon :p

I‘ve derived my own balance from the choices that were made in DQ11 for difficulty balancing…

I think I would have naturally arrived to something similar to Tim’s description of leaving the protag out and giving Serena spears. He said not to do that in his review, and I tried not to, but honestly that's what I would have chosen anyway, lol. Sylvando is my stand-in for a Hero, as a good DQ Jester class should be! I remember Jesters from DQ III !

Another thing he Tim mentions in the review that I watched too many times is what controls he finds to be comfortable: Japanese Playstation controls. Since I'm on the PC I can map my own:

I like having bottom face button as select and the **left face button for cancel/jump**. This feels like how some SNES and early PS1 games controlled as well, and blends nicely with this weird new ecosystem of PC video game controllers I've finally entered, which frustrates me because it's very XBOX-focused, which is not how my brain interprets video game controls without an Xbox controller and Xbox game in front of me!

I did japanese-style Playstation keys for DQ8 on my PS2 using OPL cheats to remap the controls, but also used X button for DQ8 back in the day. I've played DQ 1-3 on gameboy color, Dragon Quest VII on playstation using an emulator with JP style controls, Dragon Warrior IV on my original famicom using a flash cart, and played V on my super famicom... So, IDK what I'm comfortable with as far as what I've used most, but I know what feels right in my brain!

Just finished my first Dragon Quest, DQ5, on my darn telephone and had a great time. The monster recruiting was what boosted the game up to legendary status for me, although the beautiful novelty of fighting all these chess-themed monsters as a family was a great time as well. I had to go with Deborah, of course. Who could say no to marrying an abraisive physical attacker with great party chat dialogue?

Anyway though I‘ll probably take a Dragon Quest break for a while I’m definitely going to return to the series eventually. Probably for one of the ones with a job system? I think it‘s safe to say I’m hooked.

I‘m at Sylvando’s solo segment, wow, I am in love

I that each character was introduced with their own chapter, like in DQ4. The DQ4 similarities are really piling up, and I‘m here for it! Besides the obvious tournament arc with DQ4 battle music, there’s the princess who is the strongest physical fighter, the twin(?) sisters that use offensive and holy spells respectively, and now hopefully I‘m going to get solo segments for these characters where they have their own lil adventures! Glad I’ve been using Japanese VA this whole time, I will probably watch all of sylvando's cutscenes in english on youtube as well though. lol.

This part of DQ11 is on that Mother 3 tip yall
