Best footsteps in games are from Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. They are loud, staccato and varied based on what you’re walking on. Especially the effects on metal grates (which there are a lot of!) they sound … great. (Sorry.)
@espercontrol#32940 Who is the Guy Fieri of video games?
Sonic the Hedgehog was my immediate thought. Hear me out:
- Cultural icon with broad appeal during his heyday, at least in some part due to perceived “‘tude”
- Waning popularity devolving into derision in some cases
- Recent popular reassessment with more widespread appreciation of their unique imperfect but in some ways endearing brand (with some recognition of unsung altruism, thinking of [Sega](https://twitter.com/justicekazzy_/status/1130531052357935107?s=21) here)
Out of the countless exquisite little flourishes of detail and care placed into the Final Fantasy VII: Remake, the foot sound effects were up there for me.
...to be clear, to get ahead of what I imagine is my reputation for being a jokester, who may on occasion be known to say some silly if not outright bizarre things, motivated by "irony" or "sarcasm," this is one of those times where I'm employing the ol' sincerity, for comedic effect
I was listening to the part of the episode about hardware breakthroughs while lifting creaky weights, & @exodus I swear the first two times you said “bump mapping” I heard “Bonk mapping” & I thought “oh man, he's startin it up again”
(great episode, this is the first time I've heard John off-script, & he's just as knowledgeable as I'd hoped he'd be, particularly in those eras of western PC gaming that I know almost nothing about)
Yeah, awesome episode. I‘m a fan of John’s work as well, might even sub to the Patreon next if that means he'll do more retro content, plus I wanna hear his in-depth on the Japanese Playstation launch!
I had a whole thing about how Google is superficially cooler than Microsoft, but forget that.
Also, fuck Waluigi he has no reason to exist and certainly has not yet proven himself or come to his own nor will he ever because he has no right to live.
@cheezopath#33005 to be clear - eating an apple makes good sounds for you? with my brain affliction if someone near me is eating an apple I feel like I need to rocket myself into space, so I'm just checking!
@billy those are some good ones. Syphon Filter especially.
In all seriousness (seriousness may be the wrong word) the music does go a long way when done tastefully—this is why Nier Automata features my favorite desert
How would you run a cafe-arcade hybrid, and what would you call it?
I think about running a very small, cozy coffee shop with cocktail cabinets for tables and a bar about once a week.
Something really simple, since it would be primarily older games:
- Coin-Op Cafe
- Coin-Op Coffee
- Status Effect
- Coffee Invader
- Minus World
- Cafe Game Station
~ 4 cocktail tables, screens at the coffee bar and maybe one extra table where people can request a console & game. You don't pay for the games, but purchasing anything on the menu gives you access to any games available on the tables or in the library. It would probably last a month before dying here.
@kory#33087 I‘m moving this week, so unfortunately I’m super busy and trying my absolute best not to think of any more of these. The few I posted earlier might be it I'm afraid!
