Ep. 297 - The Thinking Man’s Gex

@“thebryanjzx90”#p125839 Launchers in the Marvel Vs Capcom games are a similar down-toward/down-away plus a button. This leads to more pressing of buttons.

@“JJSignal”#p125822 Jewel BEM Hunter Lime

Assuming that’s the same series of games as [Hōma Hunter Lime](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/610-last-letter-game-games-in-your-collection/1159), what does BEM stand for here? Is that a common acronym in US pop culture? The only thing that comes to mind is the old [Bem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanoid_Monster_Bem) animated series that had a recent revival but I don’t see the connection.

@“◉◉maru”#p125857 I… actually have no idea! Definitely not a common acronym either. But yes, it's Homa Hunter Lime.

But yeah, for whatever reason BEM was added to the title in the OVA when it was brought here.

EDIT:
I should have also mentioned the most obvious answer to the old Japanese PC question: SORCERIAN.
Sorcerian got a lot of different ports, and it did get a DOS version in English in the US but it didn't contain any of the extra scenarios that would be included in later versions of Sorcerian. Plus there's stuff like Sorcerian Forever for Windows that were never brought here either. Sorcerian, Xanadu, and Zeliard (which also got a DOS port with English but that's it) are so influential to a lot of games now that not really having them in any modern form overseas, unless you're signed up for EGG or do emulation, is bonkers.

In the middle of the episode right now so apologies if this gets brought up later in the episode or thread, but had an idea I wanted to share before it left my brain:

I’m currently on the part where Frank is saying he doesn’t have the time to check the instance of the first “x-killer” and that you can’t trust things to be properly meta-tagged. From what I understand, the Video Game History Foundation is working towards digitizing pieces of their collection for research. I know there’s not a lot of manpower / staffing for the organization itself, so I assume volunteer help will be essential in making the database usable.

Enter Metadata Games!

I think a lot of progress could be done by utilizing the help of a company/project like this or by creating a similar system. Tools like these seem like they could help research in aspects like the one discussed. In addition, I believe the whole “playing a game to help the history of games” angle would be a great marketing slant and really interest a lot of people, esp when there’s such a passionate community looking for ways to help that don’t necessarily know how/where to start.

Just a thought! Wanted to bring it up regardless to see if it got any ideas flowing, even if this one is impractical / sucks.

Dang almost had Mikami (Gene) vs. Kamiya (Bayonetta) on Violence Island. Maybe if we get Viewtiful Joe vs. Sam Gideon at some point…

Thanks I was upset enough about the Violence Island results that I made an account. I was looking forward to the Friendship sQuad winning season 2

Taken from the wiki;

  • - Madama Butterfly: Otherwise known as the Mistress of Atrocity, Madama Butterfly is the Demon Bayonetta made a pact with, becoming her main source of power in combat, and the Demon who Bayonetta usually summons Wicked Weaves from."
So as I understand it Bayonetta has a kind of split up Hell system where different demons are all doing their own things. I think Satan wouldn't be able to directly take her powers.

This is the true reason for Violence Island... to inspire the most powerful kinds of nerds to come post on the forums

Welcome to the forum! I considered this, but all demons are subservient to Satan. In this case Madama Butterfly is a middle manager.

Some satisfying two button combos I think are worthy of note include

  • * parry, riposte – pretty much always feels good in any game that includes this action
  • * brake, turn -- the start of any good drift
  • * jump, boost -- in rocket league specifically, to start flying around in your silly rocket powered soccer car
  • @“exodus”#p125841 shoot! There's some photos here

@“Jaffe”#p125907 I understand that Bayonetta can kill Dante of Devil May Cry, but could Dante kill Satan? Is this a rock paper scissors situation?

    @“Reverse Kaiser”#p125915 Inconclusive.

this episode was a Stone Cold Classic. i laughed out loud several times, despite being of similar age and crotchetiness to our beloved regular panel.

it's three presses but usually only two buttons:

    dash-jump-midair dash

    i love it

Brandon saying that he's the 87% right at the start was highly relatable.

I think Castlevania‘s subweapon attack button combo is pretty great. It’s always fun strategically throwing out crosses so that they hit enemies multiple times or on the return.

I read the shownotes first and Brandon's recommendation of treating my collection like Blockbuster immediately caused the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up because I thought he meant I should lend out more games, which has always been a bad experience for me. After listening I'm glad to know thats not what he meant.

As far as monsters go I'm not sure who makes the best ones, but those first two generations of Pokemon are pretty rad.

@“Toph”#p125945 My stance on lending things is don‘t lend out anything you’d truly want back.

@“exodus”#p125955 Well my stigma for lending comes from an experience as an 8 year old kid where I lent my older cousin my nes collection as he didn‘t have anything at home to play. After a few months I tried to collect it and he lied and claimed to everyone that I had given it to him, which they promptly believed. I’ve lent stuff out since then and try not to let that one disappointing experience color my decisions too much. Just about everything is replaceable these days and sometimes people just forget they borrowed something.

I still don't talk to that guy, though. He was always a jerk.

@“exodus”#p125955 Couldn't agree with that statement more! I remember lending a copy of FFVIII on the Ps1 to a friend, who somehow destroyed the third disk to the point it was unreadable - and them telling me it was like that when I gave it to them. After that I never let anyone borrow a game from my collection again and somehow they all mysteriously never broke. Or got lost!

@“Toph”#p125956 my panzer dragoon saga is water damaged because my friend used the case as a coaster lol
