Ep. 325 - Game of the Year 2023, with Kris Graft

@“Hunter”#p153274 Kitase drew inspiration from TWoO for the sorceresses in VIII, and he would go onto be director, producer and one of the writers for X!

@“aerisdead”#p153126 agreed, Hi-Fi Rush, to me, whipped ass. It‘s a very particular 2010’s Anime/Nickelodeon Indie Rock™ mashup-vibe that‘s almost entirely emotionally driven on being a blast. It tapped into a particular part of my past 16-year-old heart in a way most games haven’t done. The rhythm battle system makes my little musician brain buzzy, too.

>

@“Hunter”#p153274 Tim doesn’t read the Insert Credit forums :frowning:

He does occasionally lurk certain threads, though. If I had to guess, the likelihood he's at least skimmed this one is higher than most, given the episode's topic.

@“Gaagaagiins”#p153299 Oh I don‘t actually know. I wasn’t trying to make a serious comment about any of the hosts. I was being facetious because BOTW/TOTK has gotten a fair amount of pushback on the forums.

I am sorry for (inadvertently) spreading disinformation on the internet. I will probably do it again.

You're braver than the troops for this

i‘ve decided that putting out an entire special ninety minute episode with a panel hand-selected specifically to explain why a game is bad and sucks and isn’t good and then naming that game goty is funny enough to be semi-respectable

I‘ve played a little over an hour of Immortals of Aveum and that got me through the story intro and tutorial. Started an actual level for about 5 min. This is YOUNG ADULT FANTASY FICTION: THE RIDE: THE VIDEOGAME. I could really care less about what is happening and who it is happening to. Big forever war, militarized mages and blah blah blah. The combat seems like it might shape up to be fun, but this all very shiny and bland. Glad I checked it out from the library and didn’t spend money on it. I'll give it another couple hours perhaps.

@“tomjonjon”#p153354 seemed cool, I just do t understand how you look at doom eternal and go “well, that was great, we should make something like that.”

@“Spark”#p153378 I was thinking that my time might be better spent playing Doom Eternal again instead.

I know I am a year late with this, but it is a bit of a bummer that Astlibra didn‘t make it on the 2022 top 20 games. That game has like 3 Yakuza’s worth of mechanics for you to plink away at.

@"tomjonjon"#p153379 Yeah, I should say, why did EA execs say they wanted one of those? By "one of those" I mean their own version of Doom Eternal, a game I will forever be an antagonist for. More like Eternally not it. You didn't have to turn Doom into an action game, it already was one. Buncha idiot nimrods over there...

@“connrrr”#p153250 does that make Wakka the scarecrow because he gets a heart and becomes not racist?

@“MovingCastles”#p153442 yea

  • - The surprise hit of 2023 for me was certainly the Etrian Odyssey HD Collection, which reminded me that I like video games after every AAA supposed banger left me feeling sad and confused.
  • 2023 is a year I really apprecaite these guys filtering it out for me...!

  • -

Tim mentioning Ty the Tazmanian Tiger as a game of note? Interesting. That was certainly something my little buddy in middle school really enjoyed as a rental on Nintendo Gamecube at the time. It's lumped in my mind with Tak and the Power of Juju.

The FFXVI takes are something I'd been waiting to hear since the game was released. Cool to hear some thoughts from fellas I understand. If I ever play it, I will 1. not pay for it, 2. not take it on the terms of a final fantasy so much as a yakuza or something. I believe there is value there.

Pseudoregalia is in my personal category of games I ignore despite how they may seem to be cool. Because there's a lot of these indies that tickle my exact fancy in ways but tend to leave me disappointed in other ways, showing their hand too much, or are clearly made by someone whose worldview I don't need to entertain. BUT I find it very interesting that this one got the tim seal of approval so I will probably be checking it out. :o)

Taking notes from the manner in which Kris was challenged for his Starfield nomination to use when I have to discuss this with someone in my life who believes all games must have trash bag full of balloon animals physics. I did always dislike bethesda, except when I heard whipsers of Morrowind in middle school. By the time Oblivion was happening, it already seemed real stupid. Elder Scrolls Arena gets some kudos from me though. King's Field forever.

Ironic that Armored Core has now risen to being too highly acclaimed to fit in the 7/10 bracket

  • >

    You look ❤️healthy❤️. *That's a good thing.*

  • - This episode does remind me that I am succeeding at being very out of touch with relevant gaming news. I don‘t think about a lot of these games people are discussing!

For example, I have no idea what all this Gravity Falls comparison is about, but I remember when exodus was talking about it in the cartoons thread. I’d like to hope that whatever magic GF pulls off worked in cartoon form and that this video game the writing is compared to just sucks. Though maybe GF just slides by for the PNW vibes, the fact it‘s a Disney Channel show and other things were a hurdle I had to get over. Or actually, it’s probably because I'm in love with Kristen Schaal.

@“Updog”#p152852 Im curious what exactly tim likes about tears of the kingdom so much while not caring about the building. I dont care about the building and found my time with it pretty tedious. Genuinely curious because i would like to enjoy the game i spent 70 dollars on.

I'm kind of in the same boat-- I find the building to be tedious. I have a complicated relationship with the game, it is a game worth enjoying if you got it. The vertical slice tutorial was so nice and sweet, I wish more of the game was like that, what with the large sky island area.. I'm stuck in the water temple even though I've heard it called the easiest stupidest dungeon.

    >

@“Tradegood”#p153113 It’s so much like community theater

everything that's *good* is like community theatre imo 😹

    >

@“Gaagaagiins”#p153204 The really funny thing about Final Fantasy is that most of them suck

I think by the time we get to _Final Fantasy XXII_, this will be true.

There’s a lot to unpack & relate to in the Mario Wonder discussion— and instead, I’m just gonna say I like the way it played out :yum:

Tim did the same as me and played botw in 4k a month before TotK and it was not ideal! The synchronicity

I appreciate a good character creator as much as the next guy but I also really agree with Tim on “why can’t they make a good character for me?” That polish is why I find Sekiro more refreshing than elden ring. And it’s why I’m so frustrated with finding armor one piece at a time on opposite ends of the map in TotK, or that the sky world outfit is just 1 DEF and unupgradeable… lame

@“treefroggy”#p153652 Tim did the same as me and played botw in 4k a month before TotK and it was not ideal! The synchronicity

I hadn't played _Breath of the Wild_ basically since its launch in 2017, and let me tell you, 6 years wasn't enough time for me to not feel fatigued by the game in that sense

@“Gaagaagiins”#p153674 yeah I feel this too. I could go back and play more botw in 4K and enjoy it greatly. I appreciate the breezy naturalism of botw much more, along with everything else. Haha

I know I‘m in the minority, but I just thought that TotK suuuucked. I also did a BotW run-through beforehand having not played it since 2019 and maybe that’s what dulled my appreciation, but if you had told me that TotK was the work of a talented modding team I would have played it for a couple of hours, said “this is a cool BotW rom hack” then never touched it again.

I'll likely replay BotW again at some point in the future, but I've sold my copy of TotK and will probably never feel the need to re-purchase it.

@“billy”#p153723 I was and still am honestly baffled by how much I disliked TotK. Hadn't played BotW since release, and was so excited going in, but just bounced off of it so hard. Whenever I try going back it just repels me almost instantly.

I can understand appreciating the ingenuity of the shrines but everything about the experience outside of them felt significantly worse.

It’s a dirty little game. Nothing feels clean.

For the record, I pirated TotK a week before it came out
