Ep. 325 - Game of the Year 2023, with Kris Graft

@“billy”#p153723 with you 100%; I appreciate how difficult it must have been to make, but it totally missed what I liked so much about that first game by trading that joy of discovery for physics fail compilations

Ok enough mobile posting from me

Many of our feelings on Tchotchke are complicated. Maybe now that there‘s been time for everyone to form their own opinion and determine if you care about spoilers or not, check out the Tears of the Kingdom thread if you haven’t already!

@“MovingCastles”#p152690 is this the New Zealand bakery chain that has Asian pastries? (Googled to answer my own question that yes and that it‘s not only New Zealand (which is the only place I’ve seen one))

@“Jonks”#p152705 I had a similarly good time with the camera in TotK. I learned how useful it was to have some of the more uncommon bugs and fish and stuff logged in BotW, especially because I was compelled to upgrade all the armor. I decided from the beginning to take pictures of everything that could be logged in TotK, and I got really into it. I really tried to frame the shots right and pose all the weapons and enemies and stuff to try to have a compendium full of visually striking images (with varied success). It made me feel like maybe I should just dabble in photography.

@“dylanfills”#p153802 the very same! Yeah there are a few spread out around Victoria. Actually not sure how massive the franchise is.

@“Gaagaagiins”#p153238 almost sounds like you and I had similar experiences with the game but came to two different conclusions.

I agree when it works it works. There are moments in there that are touching and charming. But to get to those moments you really have to get through some okay-to-mind numbing combat or side questing. Do I think it's worth the time investment to see maybe a cool 5 minute cutscene. Overall no I don't.

That being said the only reason I'm still talking about this game now is because there is something there. I just don't think they executed on it in the end. As to Yeso's point it does feel like there is some management intervention to make this a bit of a more broader appealing product. Which I get because they put a lot of money into this thing and I suspect they want to appeal to a wide audience. That being said we do have Dark Souls and Elden Ring so maybe Square doesn't need to be so risk averse?

But man those cutscenes. They're exciting - but once that dopamine wears off it's ultimately a hollow experience. If I don't care for Ironman punching the Hulk and a Marvel Movie why should I give the same thing a free pass just because the Final Fantasy name is attached to it?

@“Gaagaagiins”#p153999 lmao thank you! May the Eikons sing your praises good sir

was about to stroll down here to say heck yeah Final Fantasy 16 rocks but I see you guys seemed to have had a wholesome and cheerful conversation about whatever mad intent YoshiP had in mind when he made big bad divinity whips another big bad monster ass while burning SE‘s cash

so I’ll say boo on the Humanity snub

@“diogo”#p154133 humanity hasn't been on deep enough discount for me (while I was paying attention). I do want to play it!

FFXVI at #1 is some EB Farnum-for-Mayor type action and it might get me to buy it! (Deadwood stans will know what I mean)
