Insert Credit ranks Street Fighter, Metal Gear Solid, Mega Man, Fallout, Doom, and Disaster Report’s mainline games to find the best of each series. Plus, a snake fact! Hosted by Alex Jaffe, with Frank Cifaldi, Tim Rogers, and Brandon Sheffield. Edited by Esper Quinn, original music by Kurt Feldman.
Very fun episode that one! I’d love an expanded SF one, even if I already agree that alpha 2 gold/’ is the best in that series and my favourite non numbered SF game.
Lots of laughs at the imperial/metric conversion bit. As someone who grew up with imperial and is now on metric I still do both in my head. But a trick is not to go too granular on the conversions and round it up or down. Some examples I keep on stand by:
12 inches is 30 centimetres
3 feet is a metre
A mile is 1.6 kilometres
10 square feet is 1 square metre
Liquids are too confusing as I work on UK imperial which is different to the US system so you’re on your own there but I know from cooking one cup is 240 ml.
On the topic of chip recommendations I’d like to share a story of what chip I used to recommend but no more!
For a good year or two I would buy giant bags of Garden of Eatin’ tortilla chips and eat them constantly. Then one day maybe a year and a half ago, maybe a bit more - I bought a bag and was like “ugh! these are rancid and burnt” and I ate a few of them and then threw it away. I figured it was like a production issue and that they just overcooked. So then I bought another bag, and they also tasted rancid. My girlfriend would not eat touch them after trying one. I think I gave them a chance two more times before I was like ugh these are just awful, awful chips now. What happened?
On the chip bag it said “Now even tastier!” and it still says that. They were definitely not tastier. I tried to find information online. I found gold in two places. Their facebook page, and their instagram page. Dozens of comments on posts about how their chips taste horrendous and please bring back the old chips. Every once in a while an official response along the lines of “We’re sorry you don’t like the chips, but this is a new and improved even tastier version!” But all I could find was people at least agreeing with me that the chips were bad now. There was no other information to be had!
So what the heck happened? My gut tells me the “tastier” version is about 75 times cheaper to make. But its weird because they taste like legit bad. I would eat basically any other tortilla chip over these ones. Maybe they got bought by another company and there’s like a super untaster there and they like the bad taste? Or maybe someone is trying to tank the brand somehow. But to what end?
It’s quite confusing and a shame cause the chips used to be pretty good.
Is Mega Man X: Command Mission actually good? I’ve always wanted to play it but I feel like it won’t live up to the weird cool game I’ve created in my head. Obviously I’m an .exe guy above all else though so worst case I’ve still got the Mega Man RPGs I like
i was one of the people that thought SF4 looked kind of weird at the time. now, i think i get what they were going for but i also think SF6 is the better version of that sort of thing. current capcom seems to have a kind of artistic sincerity that they had back in the good ol days of SF alpha/darkstalkers/SF3. Dimitrescu from Resi8 has a Darkstalkers-y/DMC vibe. it’s cool and horny but not in a way that feels overtly fanservicey, even if it ends up working that way. i dunno! that aesthetic sauce was missing in the ps3/360 and most of the ps4/xb1 years for me.
Oof, oh man. I don’t typically disagree so hard with the IC regulars on stuff, but I find Capcom’s Street Fighter character designs bizarre, at least in regards to the art style, after Street Fighter 3. 4, 5, and 6 just don’t look good to me. The characters all look ugly and weird, and the new characters are just weird, with awful haircuts and weird facial expressions. Do not like. I do not think Capcom did a good job with their character art when moving to 3D. No sir, I don’t like it!
FWIW the memory of the SF V grand finals being wacky because it was shortly after the launch of the game is probably conflating like, 3 different tournaments.
SF V’s first EVO was several months after the game had come out and was relatively uneventful. The grand finals was Infiltration vs. Fuudo. The grand finals that was Du vs. Ortiz was actually that year’s Capcom Cup.
The description is more fitting of SF IV’s first EVO. The game had been out in Japanese arcades for a while but came to console in Feburary and had new characters. So you had weirdness like Cammy in the top 8, who the Japanese players were less familiar with since she wasn’t in the primary version they played. Also unknown at the time PR Balrog doing really well, and Justin making the unexpcted switch to Balrog in the grand finals. It was awesome, still to this day one of the best top 8’s I’ve watched in person.
Also I was listening to this episode while driving to work and the MMX7 talk made me think of “BURN TO THE GROUND. BURN BURN BURN BURN BURN BURN TO THE GROUND” so thanks
If we’re just counting numbered entries my favorite Mega Man is 9. It’s clean! It has good music and charmingly designed robot masters! All the weapons feel actually useful outside of boss fights! It even has little bonus modes that add texture without adding too much bloat. Just great stuff all around.
Though if we go outside the numbers it’s obviously Mega Man Legends. That game is great in ways that keep reverberating louder and louder.
Kojima is probably my prime “want to like this” game creator. I agree with Tim’s initial MGS1 number one spot as that was by far the most playable one for me. I cannot get past how clunky three feels, it is simply not enjoyable for me.
Boss fights though, take the cake. Every single one has such a cool idea and I have not liked fighting perhaps a single one of them ever. Clearly this is a me problem and all but whatever. I thought maybe Snatcher could be the one but it just does not rope me in, in a way that say, Disco Elysium does.
Also, while I haven’t played the Disaster Report games, I did empathize with the idea of console series coming to PSP worse, until the PS4 I only had a PSP, so that was how I hit up littlebigplanet for instance, and it sucked.
