All this Laguna Seca talk has me curious about going out there. Has anyone gone? I’ve never watched motorsports so I didn’t realize that Forza and Gran Turismo were accurate reflections of the actual sport. It appears race events are basically european electronic music festivals with IRL Time Attacks, drifting challenge modes, and arcade mini games?
Speaking of the Nürburg Ring. Once a year there’s a rock festival “Rock am Ring” (Rock at the ring) and when I went with friends our tent was in walking distance to a sharp turn followed by a long straight part of the track. In the late morning we would walk to the track and watch the cars and in the afternoon/evening we’d go to the festival grounds and watch concerts. Pretty dope!
From what my dad told me of visiting the ring to watch formula 1 the experience wasn’t that different except the focus was of course more on the cars. But since the races take quite a long time and there’s a lot of downtime from a viewer’s perspective there’s also lots of other stuff to do.
Musically it was closer to rock back in the day but I wouldn’t be surprised if it got EDMified over time.
Hah, Gridlife as far as I understand is a newer event and didn’t exist until after Forza Horizon.
I guess it makes sense that they’ve modernized it for a new generation.
My only other raceway experience is probably 24 years outdated. I vaguely remember going to some state fair and the accoutrements were cow pie bingo and seeing the fattest hog this side of the mississip’, while my uncle sat in the bleachers drinking a budweiser mumbling about how much he hates that pretty boy Jeff Gordon.
I love how reviled Gordon was. He’d be the most beloved person in most any other sport. Being a young, not slobbish guy wearing a Jeff Gordon shirt to NASCAR races used to be a great way for me to attract empty beer cans to the head and meet new people who’d greet me as “F**!”
First time I ever heard that slur was my stepdad talking about Jeff Gordon lol
