Fan translations and other contributions that feel essential

Two Battle Network phone games have been translated. I’m on Linux and haven’t been able to get the emulator running in Wine. I hope Windows folks enjoy!

Hyped for this one, probably will become my favorite Saturn game.

Not a fan translation but it feels kinda essential

Been reorganizing my snes library this week

Just finished playing through the translation of Boku No Natsuyasumi 2. I had wanted it in English for years and the quality of the translation did not disappoint. The redone textures must have been tough work.

Highly recommended.

Full reveal, I haven’t read this yet, but it’s cool to see an article about video game fan translations coming from a magazine/ site that is not specifically about video games (I know Paste covers some game stuff now but I still think of them as music people primarily):

RIP RHDN cohost! - "RIP RHDN"

End of an era but also glad we can hopefully move on to community led ownership in whatever follows

I know there are other places to get hacks and that RHDN is on archive.org for now at least, but this is still alarming. I liked knowing I could go probably get translations for stuff there.

Also I had a couple of hacks on the site. Not sure if I should be looking for somewhere else to put them now.

Jeez, how weird. I was setting up a bunch of Pokemon hacks for a friend just yesterday, thanks to that site, with no sense at all of what’d happened.

By coincidence I never even played a ROM hack or sought out much info about them until earlier this year, when I wanted to try a difficulty hack for FF6, “Brave New World.” The very design of the site implies a long history but sheesh, I feel like I just did a speedrun of the internet life cycle. Discovery, delight, use and complacency, then surprise to hear it’s gone.

edit: oh wait… RHDN is still going to post news on new patches and include relevant links. That’s great.

I just really hope something better comes. RHDN was not perfect, but it was the best we had. Stuff needs to be all in one place. I hate the cancerous communities and forums that surround most rom hacking scenes, it’s a pain in the ass to find stuff that way. (Like Pokemon, Mario 64, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy Tactics hacking, always have been in their own insular little communities)
Time to bring them all together!

I remember lots of drama on RHDN over the years, because it’s one of my favorite websites.

Everyone: please keep posting patches in these threads and spread the word! more important right now than ever before.

Wondering if anyone here has purchase fan translated reproductions of Sega Saturn games? I’ve located someone selling a fan translated copy of Baroque but I’m not sure if it’s legit.

Thanks guys.

While I’ve never bought a translated game for the Saturn before, my go to for any Saturn translations is here SEGA Saturn Translation Projects – SEGA SATURN, SHIRO! I get any translations or patches from there and they always work perfectly.

As they have Baroque listed as SSP compatible I assume they’ve just taken the patch and applied it to an image and that’s what you’d be getting. Could be worth asking them if that’s the version they are using.

Thanks Tom. I suspect that’s what’s going on with the reprods - I recall hearing burnt discs worked well with the Dreamcast but not sure with the Saturn.

I might bite the bullet and give it a shot!

My pleasure =)

From what I know, as I have never needed to test, they work fine provided the burns have been done a certain way (lower burn speed, from original bin/cue files) they should be fine. Is this from etsy or somewhere like that?

Yeah should be interesting. Originally it’s was going to be from Etsy but they don’t ship to Australia. I found a dude called Nights Into Dreams on Shopify. Zero experience with that store so I’ll either report back saying how much I’ve enjoyed the game, or come back complaining that my account has been drained.

Purchasing a Satiator would’ve solved all these problems but it’s a bit pricey atm.

I found that store when having a quick look, it’s a nice reproduction they’ve done for up on the shelf.

One thing you could do is try and make a copy up yourself - as I’m guessing you have a Kai so you could find the image, apply the patch and burn the disc up to see if it works. That way at least you know if it’s worth it or not, even if it’s paying for the case and artwork it will look very cool.

Yeah it’s not a bad idea for future fan translations. I’m happy to purchase a repro this time because I find Baroque so fascinating.

It’s been ordered so we shall see how this goes. Might make a post in the Mail thread once it arrives.
