Favorite Fake Credit Names

I’ve had this idea rolling around for a while so here it goes.

It’s common knowledge that back in the day Japanese devs were compelled to put goofy nicknames into the credits of the games they made instead of using their real names. Obviously this was a toxic practice and I wish it hadn’t happened, so I don’t want to come across as celebrating the practice itself. The names themselves, though, were often quirky, mysterious, and otherwise interesting, and as someone who enjoys watching through the entire credits after beating an old game, I find myself screenshoting these strange epithets or writing them down because they’re just so weird.

So I thought, hey, what if we had a thread to remember some of our favorites.

To start:
I play through KOF 98 (on easy) whenever I want something comfortable and familiar. I’m digging Blaster Lu, Dear Ichi Jerry, and that one under Bug Checker that’s seemingly a bunch of random numbers and letters.

I remember being perplexed by these names as a child.

YUUKICHAN’S PAPA and FISH MAN were pretty good.

Phantasy Star’s credits also feature “April Fool”, “Chaotic Kaz”, “Works Nishi”, and “Gamer Miki”

Boris Karloffice is just perfect.

Edit: Wanted to explain it a bit more, for the other credits, Christopher Bee is too obvious, while James Banana is kinda too different that you wouldn’t really know it’s a reference to James Bernard, but Boris Karloffice is just the perfect Goldilocks middle, where it’s a clear refence but still has a bit of a reach (perhaps painfully so) that it makes it the funniest.

I have no idea who Vinyl Boy (Golden Axe) is, but I wish him and the other unknown credits (Mobygames) well.
