@“antillese”#p128868 I love them both so much and I think a big reason why is they feel like genuinely cool characters (especially Bob) who are big guys and I like they get to be confident, stylish dudes of that body type instead of just a joke and the game is mocking them. Bob's default outfit in Tekken 7 inspired me to do a similar outfit and up my fashion game in general a few years ago.
wrote this for people who are interested in learning how to play Rev2 https://pattheflip.medium.com/how-to-play-guilty-gear-xrd-rev2-for-the-sony-playstation-4-and-microsoft-windows-personal-computer-f3be741d4db0
I like both Bob and Rufus. I thought they were two of the best new characters from those respective games. Big dude who is fast and technically sound is a fun trope.
Bring them back, and also bring back Cheng Sinzan in Garou 2.
I‘m a big fan of Bob, I don’t like Rufus. It comes down to how they‘re presented and the intention of character. Bob was a small framed guy that wanted to get better by adding more power to his punches and kicks. To do that, he found a way to bulk up while staying as fast as he was when he was small. His size is his advantage, and something that he really values. He’s also just cool as shit.
Rufus on the other hand is just a joke character. Not a joke character in that he's mechanically and competitively trash, but a joke character in that you're supposed to point and laugh at him. He's a capcom caricature of an American; the ying to Guile's yang. Instead of being a honorable, hard-working family man, he's a brash, loud, obese idiot. I don't have any issues with big dumb characters; a himbo if you will, but I do have an issue with Rufus. Mostly because his body is supposed to be a joke. They made him big because he's supposed to be all of the "negative" stereotypes of an American, so they made him fat because they saw fat as being funny. They did the same thing with Birdie in 5, who was kicked out of shadoloo cause he was eating too much of the kraft service and got really heavy. They decided to make birdie a joke character like rufus; loud, fat, and stupid.
As someone who has body image issues and was heavy as a kid, I really resent Rufus and Birdie. They treat people's weight as something to be laughed at.
Also, Rufus is a dive kick character and people don't like those or something... I don't know. I actually don't really know much about how he played, but his visual design and lore is stomach churning to me. I'm not saying that a character can't be a bad guy or a "heel" and be heavy, but when Rufus is the only big framed person on the entire roster and it's seen as a negative, that comes across as pretty shitty to me.
@“KingTubb”#p129727 I really appreciate you sharing this. It‘s really unfortunate these characters can’t just be cool and exist as they are and instead have to be a joke and are defined by their body types. I think Bob manages to come across as genuinely cool despite the fact he seems to also be intended as a joke, just not as over the top as Rufus.
I‘ve been trying to take a healthier approach to fighting games by rediscoving the joy of when I just played casually and have tried to take the balance approach of both learning combos, frame data, etc. with my main but just enjoy casual matches with characters I find cool or fun and not worry so much about having to master every combo and spend a ton of time in training mode with them or whatever just to play other people and have a good time. I’ve been swapping between Kimberly in ranked stuff in SF6 and Honda just for fun, and am I winning with Honda? Not much. Would I feel comfortable maining him in ranked or a tournament? I don't think so. Am I having a blast playing him? Hell yes.
Crazy that they finally get a Capcom character in Mortal Kombat and they pick one from Street Fighter: The Movie.

@“◉◉maru”#p132049 That doesn't seem to be a very good likeness of his (much younger) face.
Fighting Game Folks: I want to play some Virtua Fighter 5 with you!
This would probably be the PS4/5 version (which has better netcode) but I'm not above the 360 version (which is backwards compatible on modern Xboxes). What's the platform preference among the folks here?
@“TheFragranceOfDarkCoffee”#p133342 I‘ve got it on PS4, though I’m far from good at it. It's a fun time though!
I would play this on the “PlayStation 45”. Looking forward to losing. Search this thread for how my brain does not understand Virtua Fighter. It is a matter of public record.
A few weeks later than usual, so that it could match the 30th anniversary of Garō Densetsu SPECIAL (September 16), yesterday Game Center Mikado hosted the Fatal Fury Special World Cup 2023 tournament. I was busy with work this weekend so I skipped the A–B and C–D qualifying blocks, but here is the final bracket.

Don’t mind the 2022 above, they forgot to update the logo on their Powerpoint.
Less variety in characters than last year but nice to see two Mais and two Axels. Most notably are missing Shivashin (2018 winner & 2022 finalist) and Kōmei (the Pelé of the tournament but he seems semi-retired since COVID). No idea if they lost during the qualifying brackets like a few other Garospe figures or if they didn’t compete this year.
Will tournament organizer, MC, official mascot and perennial magnificent loser AKIRA finally claim his first World Cup? Will 与作 ‹Yosaku› keep his crown? Will we finally get a World Cup final with neither a Kim nor a Billy involved? This year was [less crazy than last time](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/24-fighting-game-is-something-so-great/481) but, as usual, the average level was very high. I was especially impressed by the Axel Vs. Big Bear bout early on.

>!Unbelievable that AKIRA once again couldn’t claim the title even though he finally managed to beat 与作 ‹Yosaku›. It’s the second major tournament win in a row for ヤマカワ ‹Yamakawa› after EVO Japan at the beginning of the year.!<
Soul Calibur’s Weapons Master Mode perfected the single player fighting game mode. Perfect incline for training skills and fundamentals. Why so few fighting games do this, I will never understand.
(I tried and failed to find an Olcladan gif with his best win quote: "Why am I so powerful?")
@“treefroggy”#p134135
Unlocks are pretty core to getting people to keep playing through Weapons Master iirc and most of that stuff would be prime mtx content these days. Without that motivator you're closer to like, missions and trials that are fun and useful for the people who want to learn but not really it for the others.
I think smash ultimate did a good job with the world of light bc it had mostly mode-specifc unlockable stuff that no one would really want to pay for but was just enough to keep me going because I got to see cards from video games.
@“pattheflip”#p134480 the only reason I do world of light is to unlock being able to change the music on the main menu
AKI is out for SF6!!! I played some offline sets during maintenance last night and had a lot of fun. Got a really neat toolset, and I love the look. Curious to see how competitive players evaluate the character cuz she seems pretty strong!! Lots of options at every range.
Any Melty Blood players here? I‘ve played 4/5 Tsukihime routes and I think I’m safe to play without the character select screen being a giant spoiler now. I have Actress Again and Type Lumina and I'd like to play AA because of its cool and unique moon phase mechanics (plus my crappy laptop can run it well). I need to seek out Community Edition and not the Steam version though, right?
