Playdate is having a sale on many of its catalog games, which you can see here. As a person who has been vaguely interested in getting some playdate games but constantly thought “hmm do I want to pay that much for a game I'll probably never play” this pushed me over the edge on some games I may never play.
Here are the games I picked up (pullfrog isn't discounted but whatever)
@“[exodus]”#p156569 Whoops, wish I'd waited a couple of weeks for some of these.
I've ended up getting Under the Tree, Pulpergeist, Fore! Track, P-Racing, Halfway to Dawn, Necrocrisis, Soko, Treasure Chasers, Generations, Legend of Etad, A Balanced Brew, Core Fault, Direct Drive, and Sketch, Share, Solve. I went a little overboard but I'm loving my Playdate at the moment.
@“Mnemogenic”#p158810 4.1 and 5 are great. World Brothers is fun enough. Iron Rain is self serious but still enjoyable. Wingdiver is a goofy shoot em up with an EDF coat of paint. I love em all.
@“Mnemogenic”#p158810 The core EDF games are perhaps the best shooters ever made. In that bundle, 4.1 and 5 are core games and rule.
I think 4.1 is the best of the series because it is a continuation of 3 but with more classes, enemies and weapons. 4.1 has the Hectors, the bipedal robots and I think these are key to the franchise. Every bullet you fire causes a reaction from an enemy when it hits. In something like Gears, enemies only play a hit reaction when they take a certain amount of damage so they act like bullet sponges. In EDF, almost any bullet causes a hit reaction so the shooting feels great but with the Hectors, it allows for cool set pieces. They have these huge arm cannons that do loads of damage and by shooting the cannon you can deflect the shot. It doesn't sound like much but it really shows you how limited other shooters are and allows you do create your own set pieces.
EDF 5 is a new timeline with new enemies. It plays better and has some cool environments.
World Brothers is dreadful and Iron Rain doesn't have the right feel. They were made by Yukes.
For the bundle, I'd pay the lowest price and get 4.1. There's hundreds of hours there and if you want more, you can find a cheap way to get 5 later.
Remembered somehting cool about EDF5: while the large bipedal enemies in this game don't have the same physics based animation as the Hectors in 4.1, you can cut their limbs off with your bullets to disarm them. One time, I was bombing about on an attack motorbike with front machine guns and I did a drift turn round a building, saw a large frog man, and blasted it with the machine guns, sawing off his legs while I was doing a cool drift turn. This is the peak of video games. This is all video games should be aiming for.
Also, if you enjoy making heads swivel, get the DLC with the anime girl vehicles and go online. Other players do cartoon character eyes popping out when they see a bright pink mech suit covered in anime girls rolling up on an implacable horde of death ants.
play-asia is selling Steam versions of games, pick three for $15. There’s a lot of good games to choose from, for example you could get Celeste, Disco Elysium and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen for $15.
They are also doing a pick three for $100 on physical games. I picked up Bowser’s Fury, Paper Mario: TTYD and Luigi’s Mansion 2 for $100. That’s pretty darn cheap for Nintendo games that haven’t even released.
as someone who missed out on peak cool Xbox 360 days (I’m catching up, I’m even playing El Shaddai right now) should I grab Dark Void for $2.99 before it’s delisted forever?
It is a good $3 game that I have a fondness for. It is a little bottled huff of 2010. The main character is even voiced by Nolan North. I bought mine for $5 in a mall on Long Island at a GameStop the year it came out.
I would hesitate to describe it as good, though.
It really jumps up to slap the door frame and rolls its ankle on the landing. It has ideas it knew it never had the budget for, and that rules.
I say nab it! It is a cute, clumsy little adventure game!
