Games you're thinking about playing

Haha whoooooops! It was only a matter of time before I made an enemy in these here parts. >:)

I did wonder how many Oregonian feathers I might ruffle. :P

I remember as a teen that the voice acting in X was so bad that I would just mute the game when others were nearby out of sheer embarrassment.

Ten has best combat of any FF game. They stole from one of the best when they cribbed from Breath of Fire IV’s system. If you really like spinning things up and watching them go XII’s combat is fine.

I like everything about XII except the main story. It’s a big trinket hunt that never really does much of anything with any of the characters. I like them all individually and you get a lot more out of that game if you view it as you’re making your own little story with them as you explore the world. But for main narrative it’s not really all that imo.

I’m not the biggest X fan but if you want that more guided and complete FF narrative that’s its’ main thing!

I’ve been in the mood where I just need something to kickstart my interest for me to choose what game to play next. Like new hardware, a lost prototype, a fan made patch or a really good youtube video. Maybe I’ll check my yt watch later playlist.

I stumbled upon Last Command while browsing steam a while ago and wishlisted it for later. It looks weird and interesting. Advertises itself as Snake x Bullet Hell which seems neat.

Also it has overwhelmingly positive reviews and is currently on sale. I’m really thinking about playing it. Seems like it didn’t get much attention when it released in october 2022

sometimes I think about playing Myst…

thinking about it again because of the most recent Game Studies Study Buddies episode

http://rangedtouch.com/2024/07/30/72-myst-masterpiece-edition/

…maybe this time I’ll actually play it?

I find a Myst playthrough soothing, but the version choice matters very much.

It was the first game I got for the 3DS. That is not the way to play Myst. At minimum, play on a computer.

whoa I had no idea there was a 3DS port xD

I both like and hate Star Wars and am feeling the pull to try out The Old Republic for the first time. I like the Old Republic era stuff I’ve played/read a lot more than most of the Skywalker saga stuff so I feel like it might up my alley. Plus it’s f2p for the first 60 levels and two expansions.

Has anyone played it before? People seem much less fanatical about it than other MMOs(FFXIV mostly, a game I did eventually drop and prob won’t be going back to) but I’ve heard it has some good stuff in it.

I’m thinking about playing an ape escape. I haven’t played them since they came out and I don’t remember much about any of them.

If I were to play just one of them which one do you think I should try to find?

I played it on release and had a decent enough time with it. I’m not a huge MMO-head so I didn’t get far with it.

It’s very Bioware filtered through an MMO for better or worse so I believe you can enjoy as a solo narrative experience. I played as a bounty hunter and was comically evil which was entertaining.

Each class has their class specific intro story before breaking into a wider MMO narrative. Could try that out before deciding to play on?

I’m a big fan of the first one. It’s like an alternate universe 3D platformer. It has tons of charm and the right amount of challenge. It’s got a good length to it and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Highly recommended.

It’s easy to find a disc for or you can play it in emulation. Ape Escape 2 is on PS4/5. I haven’t played 3 but Tim seems to think it’s the best one.

I think you’re right. I’ll think on if I actually want the disc kicking around.

You could be a big weirdo and play Ape Quest first.
(That was me. And maybe it’s still the only one I’ve ever played)

I need some opinions!

My only experience with Super Monkey Ball is seeing it at GDQ speedruns and I feel like the time is drawing near for me to experience it first-hand. What would be the best way to get into the series? Banana Mania seems like the obvious choice as it comes with all levels from the previous games if I understood that right.

Is that the way to go? And if so: which platform would you recommend to get it for? Not quite sure if the Switch handles it well.

banana mania is the way to go and it runs perfectly fine on switch (playing it on switch right now in fact).

it’s also on heavy discount at the moment, at least in the usa.

I have nothing against Banana Mania but would say, based on my own experience, playing the Gamecube original is about as quick and painless as it gets (provided you’ve got a computer with Dolphin or a modded Wii). It’s based on an arcade game so the boot-to-play time is very short

Thanks, exactly what I needed to know!

I think I’d prefer the option to go portable if possible so I’ll probably go with the Switch version of Banana Mania. Good to know it’s on sale in the US, too. Maybe I’ll do some Nintendo account trickery and get it in the US shop. It’s full price in my region sadly.

Did you end up playing one of them?

I finished both of them a few months ago and loved both for very different reasons. Both I could straight up not complete without the help of invincibility cheat codes tho lol. The difficulty rams up like crazy in both by the end!

I got FF12 to the jail and am currently rockin with FFX.

I like the cast a lot! You can really see a compelling vision for what a “next gen” classic final fantasy could be. There’s some tough stuff in here for sure, I just did the seymour fight, which by my understanding is famously hard? My biggest complaint thus far is actually that the environments kind of feel like long empty hallways. I don’t mind a linear game at all but it feels a little like they didn’t have a great idea of how to fill in between set pieces. I also just did that ice sphere puzzle and when it just resets the puzzle if you don’t think while walking across the tunnel I almost threw my device.

That said, I feel like this game is like weirdly a precursor for specifically Chained Echoes in terms of combat and I love that for me.
