Games you're thinking about playing

I’m thinking about finally playing Earthbound. I’m also thinking about playing Jeanne d’Arc. For whatever reason that game was the only thing I wanted on PSP as a teen who didn’t have one. I actually have one now and I never bothered playing it, but now that it’s available on PS5 for cheap I’m thinking about it.

I played it as a bedtime game on Steam Deck. I imagine the Switch version would work just as well for that.

Jeanne d’Arc is an awesome little game, well worth a moment or two of anyones time. I’m still shocked they re-released it and for the first time in Europe as well!

Give it a whirl, if you like tactics games and a very artistic licence of French history you won’t be disappointed. However I do believe the pact between British monarchy and demons may actually be factual.

Jeanne d’Arc is great! It’s probably one of my favorite tactics RPGs, and I mean to make some time to revisit it now that it’s on modern hardware finally

I regret to inform you all that I did boot up Earthbound instead and am quite enjoying it, but I hereby make this Insert Credit forums pledge: I will play Jeanne d’Arc next. It’s time someone taught the English a lesson.

People or language? As I’m fine with both.

I’ve never been to the Pacific Northwest, but I have been through small, forested towns in Northern California and it sure captured that vibe pretty well, which I imagine is somewhat similar to small, forested towns in Or-uh-gone.

In any case, the game is fun as heck and being in the Pacific Northwest is hardly integral to its enjoyment, imho. The game could have been set in any spooky, forested backwoods area and it would still be great.

that’s good to know. I haven’t been to northern CA or any farther south than Portland but I imagine that they’re similar. Silent Hill 2 was the best in my opinion. That fog and the quiet sense of isolation it produces was spot on. I hate buying games on the epic store but it’s on sale there and I’m going to give it a try.

EDIT: also I know the game doesn’t take place in the northwest but it sure feels like it does.

Forum where do we land on FFX vs FFXII?

I’ve played about two hours of each and am split.

Which one sticks the landing on story more? I would say personally thus far I like the classic gameplay of ten but hate the voice acting. Am a little put off of XII kind of feeling like an MMO, but sky pirates are cool?

X definitely sticks the story landing better.

Xs story was the last FF story that I could stomach but be advised what a low bar I think that is.

one of these games was written by matsuno and the other one was not

anyway they’re both great

I think the only thing X has over XII in terms of writing is that it’s more legible and familiar. Can’t think of why it would be considered actually better. Both good games imo but kind of apples/oranges comparison

Yeah I think this may end up just being a pick your mood situation… X feels like IX and XII feels like a Matsuno game (I love matsuno games even if I’m not liking the combat thus far) so probably more of a palace intrigue kind of thing.

the combat in XII is kind of dull in the early going but does get more interesting as the game adds complexity

Personally prefer XII because it’s up there with V in terms of ‘Final Fantasy games where you can really mess around with the systems’. But I also prefer the characters and the writing in XII.

XII is kind of cool in that it kind of almost feels like an adult story in the way that XVI eventually did, but with Vaan and the PG rating it probably doesn’t quite get there. I also don’t like to play it so I like X much more overall.

Storywise, I think X does a better job landing the story, in part because it is one of the most coherent Final Fantasy stories: Tidus and Yuna are the focus throughout, and the pilgrimage gives a linear progression to the story.

But I have a soft spot for what XII does storywise. It’s messier because Vaan isn’t exactly the hero except by virtue of being a part of Ashe’s company, and there are three overlapping layers to the story (in my head, the invasion of Rabanastre, the temptation of Ashe, and Vayne Solidor are distinct theaters, each becoming prominent for an act of the story). It takes more work on the game’s part to put these pieces together, but when it works, it works really well for me.

Yeah both games seem cool. I remember the gambits being evoked in the same breath as Unicorn Overlord - the issue is that the kind of autobattling thing feels kind of loose to me? But ivalice is really cool.

Honestly I think the solution is go back in time and buy myself a ps2 instead of a GameCube.
