I don’t like sokoban but I like the box-pushing minigame in Deadly Premonition, mostly because of the weird grunting sounds York makes, as well as the weird box-breaking sound the box makes as it is pushed. When I played the game, I actually muted the sound during those sequences because these noises annoyed me so much, but now I look back on them fondly. So that’s a game-segment that I prefer to think about playing than to play.
I agree with everything the VS unenjoyers are saying with the caveat that I loved it - and don’t think it’s a Fez or an Animal Well. It kinda put the same spell that Hollow Knight did on me where I hard binged it for like 72 hrs and did everything.
There’s some really cool stuff in there and infinitely more narratively impactful than the soft touch of those three games. That said it ain’t for everybody! I think you really gotta like the story. I’ve always thought Undertale or hollow knight is the best comparison.
I think people say this about Void Stranger because it’s still hard in 2024 to talk about games that are (imo) not fun. Personally I love the game because it is honest and immutable and it doesn’t center my enjoyment, and I think we ought to quit apologizing for that!
I’d actually say that Void Stranger is pretty clearly not a game for you if you don’t like your first 2 hours or so with it. Sure the story develops and pays off over time but if the gameplay isn’t your thing and the story bits don’t hook you in the first two hours, you won’t love it after fifty.
And yeah. The game saves after each room so the trees are meant as chapter breaks at which you can end the game “naturally” by resting.
I love how no one said anything negative about the game until I decided to play it.
we had a thread hashing this stuff (positive, ambivalent, and negative perspectives) a while back
I never doubted that the blame was mine.
nah it’s not you; the thread is full of spoilers so probably to be avoided by new players but then again, that’s part of the game’s whole thing and the whole dilemma. Might be worth a read and a bump if you can find it
I have been enjoying Animal Well as my post- Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth cleanse and I got eaten by a gecko. I also rode a ghost. I also curve fit a function in the form of X*sin(X) to three points in order to unlock a treasure chest. I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit!
I also hear its got a buncha meta puzzle stuff and I don’t have the correct mental attitude for that nonsense!
I started reading that thread and got about 35-ish posts in before it started getting spoilery. I’m not ready to give up yet, and it seems like some people changed their minds about it as they played, so I’m still on board for now, but don’t want to dig into the spoilers.
I think the central point of divergence was between:
this sokobon game has cool storytelling stuff vs this sokobon game is getting in the way of cool storytelling stuff
and I don’t think those camps ever reconciled
Right now I’m on floor 84 and I think I’m in the first camp?
I’m settling into a rhythm of trying each puzzle a few times, and if I can’t solve it, I’m consulting a spoiler-free guide. This makes the sokoban gameplay a mixture of easy puzzles, and puzzles that are easy once I look up the answer. This seems to be a good fit for me.
Phew! I am not finding it to be one (at least not yet!)
I didn’t like Fez either - although the soundtrack bangs. Felt pretty vacuous. Animal Well was cool but not for me - I think for me it’s either gotta be mostly about the narrative or pure arcade high fun per second.
is dredge good
i dug its eldritch comfort food vibe. modest mechanics and exploration with solid execution. doesn’t let you overstay your welcome.
I didn’t finish it and didn’t feel compelled to. It’s definitely fairly cool and might be your thing so I do think it’s worth a try. I just found it kinda thin.
honestly that puts a point in it’s favor for me. i’m kinda lookin for a 20-30 minutes before bed but with lizard brain mobile game progression type thing.
Yeah it’s definitely good for that and with more interesting aesthetics than your average mobile whatever out there
you’re telling me it’s better than farm land?
