@“Gaagaagiins”#p129796 I mean I get what he was going for because I think I even watched or read an interview with him about the differences in performance between in-game Tidus and narration Tidus, but he and so much of the cast‘s performances still sound to me like someone reading a bedtime story to a small child. I don’t know why I didn't get that from the sequel but I suspect the localization process evolved between the two games.
I‘ve noticed a trend of a lot of long RPGs in this thread. I’ll throw in that this thread inspired me to pick up FFXV again. I just moved and am in that weird “unpacking/organizing/staring at piles of stuff” limbo, so having a big silly game to shut my brain off at night has been nice.
I'll throw on the pile "pretty much every game I own on the 3DS"
I'd like to finish those FEs and the SMTs I have on there, but that console hurts my hands, and depending on how I'm holding it, my hands fall asleep cause of some nerve damage I have. It's a real struggle to get through a 40+ hour game

I'm the small child
Need some help, thinking of Chrono Trigger, Tactics Ogre Reborn, Doom, Quake 1, Disco Elysium, and Gravity Rush.
I haven't played a turn based RPG in a few months so I'm mostly drawn to Chrono or Ogre. Part of me really wants to play some classic FPS but I'd like to start with Doom to see the progression to Quake and I've just played a few early 90s games and am looking for something a bit more contemporary (a possible hangup for Chrono and edge to Ogre). Baldurs Gate 3 hype has me interested in a CRPG and restarting Disco to finally play thru (first time was a tough and busy period so shelved it until there was proper time to commit) but having just played a point-and-click adventure (Fate of Atlantis) part of me wants something a bit faster paced and not on the computer. Gravity Rush would check a lot of boxes but have a lot of traveling coming up so a portable option is preferred.
Typing out the thought process has been helpful, leaning Chrono Trigger, also have a few under 2 hour Switch games to rip thru which would help cleanse the palate and bide time until I'm able to veg in front of a TV and game as god intended.
I keep almost playing Vagrant Story, to the extent that I‘ve now watched a big ol YouTube video explaining how all those mechanics actually work, but I’ve never gotten to the end of the first dungeon. One of these days!
The other notable persistent game in my mind is El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, which I've been thinking about playing for maybe twelve actual years. I bet that game's weird!
@“KingTubb”#p129843 i keep thinking about giving ff15 another try but god, i bounced off of it like three times already
@“phylaxis”#p129872 the fighting is… not great. But I like the banter between the boys and fishing. Luckily, the story seems pretty flat, so I don‘t feel bad if I don’t finish
@“KingTubb”#p129875 i wish it wasn‘t so boy-focused for me! there’s like…… one or two women i can think of that i saw in the game, and pretty much the only one i ever really saw was just like, an item shop with boobs
@“phylaxis”#p129876 I was just thinking how cool a game like that with the genders swapped would be.
@“connrrr”#p129878 i have thought about this many times!! in ff13 every time i had the chance i made my partly all women and it was great, having that be the entirety of ff15 would have done a ton for me
@“FaulteredBeast”#p129868 those are all so different! chrono trigger and tactics ogre have totally different systems and progression models (running around, random battles, and turn based vs menu-driven, set battles, and tactics). anyway chrono trigger is a fun time if you've not done it so I say lean into it!
@“exodus”#p129888 lol I am a bit of a scatter brained gamer, I think Chrono checks the most boxes and isn’t as much of a commitment as Tactics. 3DS > Switch for portability is a bonus. I played Chrono in high school but think the final few twists made me believe I had finished it/it was time to study for finals so it’s a part replay/first play. I loved it at the time and stoked to replay it having checked off a bunch of SNES RPGs recently.

Gladia would be a revelation...
@“FaulteredBeast”#p129868 Doom, Quake, and Chrono Trigger are all among my favorite games so I highly suggest all of them.
If you‘re leaning Chrono Trigger I would say just go for that, especially if you’re not really trying to like, learn new things right now, and if you want something fairly short.
Chrono Trigger feels pretty long but it‘s much shorter than a lot of jrpg’s.
It's also holds up super well.
I like weird, dumb, old stuff, but Chrono Trigger feels very not weird, dumb or old.
Or if you do want a weird snes rpg maybe go for Robotrek?
That game's pretty dang cool.
I
did end up going with Chrono Trigger and my 15 year old used copy has a fun $19.99 sticker ON TOP of a $24.99 sticker back when DS games were being given away. Looks like it’s gone up a tad but love my little artifact. The old save files show I made it to the end back in the day but not sure if I ever completed things, I vaguely remember being lost and confused (and busy with finals). Loving the replay, loving the game, thanks for the encouragement to start!
I know this is an illegal use of this thread, but I am currently “at work” and therefore not playing Tears of the Kingdom, which by default means that I am thinking about playing Tears of the Kingdom, because that is how I spend all of my non-Tears of the Kingdom-playing time of late.
No, this is a good use of this thread.
Another good use of this thread is to discus how PC Gaming World friggin' **loved** Bullfrog's _Magic Carpet_. It was heavily advertised and referenced in their reviews. I never played it and I bet I would find it interesting.
I‘ve been considering playing virtua fighter, but the fact that ultimate showdown is in psn jail is a barrier for me! We need a PC port! I do have a PS4 but it’s in wardrobe jail. That being said, 3 and 4 are on fightcade!
I was considering Blazblue but I just picked a character learnt a simple bnb, got completely owned and had a great time! Who knows, I might be firing up the PS4 and taking a trip to nitaku town soon. I should be doing less thinking and more virtual punching!
I want to get back to Disco Elysium but it's a heavy read. I need to be in the right mood to play it.
i am ***** as **** which is something i am already regretting telling you all but we are all friends here, yea?
anyways i am like damn i should finally play OKAMI, right? everyone‘s played Okami, yea? they played okami on ps2 and then they played okami again on the wii with the motion controls. that’s insane. I‘ve never played Okami, not even once. Not even when i was **** not even when I was *****. That’s crazy. I should play Okami, yea?
already drafting a response to deny that the person above is me
