Games you're thinking about playing

Yeah I played and enjoyed New Vegas at a stable* 20-30 fps back in the day, but it didn’t really stick with me. I feel like I should be all about Obsidian stuff yet nothing has hooked me enough to give them a fair shot.

*Not even remotely stable

Lord help me, I’m downloading Infinity Nikki.

One of my goals this year is to branch out more and play games that I’d usually ignore. Also, everyone I know who’s played this says it’s actually a banger.

Update on Infinity Nikki: every single sentence I’ve seen is approximately this insane.

Does every gacha game throw this much jargon at you right away?

Watching a little Avowed on twitch. It really does look like exactly the type of game I want to play. I’m thinking about the future when I get to play it (next year).

I just remembered that PC gamepass is 20 bucks so if you have a pc that can play the game we can play it for 1/3 the price of new…if you trust yourself to cancel it before the month’s end. Based on the reviews I don’t think I’ll care to play it a second time at some point in the future.

Also I found a psvr2 for cheap on marketplace so I’m thinking about play RE:Village in vr. Horror games in VR are so horrifying and delightful. Particularly if you’ve inured yourself to being scared by any other media from over consumption over the past 35 years.

Is there any good reason to play a david cage game? I only played Heavy Rain near it’s release. It was a really dumb experience and I don’t think I was ready to enjoy bewildering art making decisions in video games when I played it. Are there one’s that might give the same experience of, lets say the the 1986 movie Spookies?

No, all you experience is the Mind of David Cage

No thanks! I’ve been subjected to the minds of low rent auteurs too often.

I’m having such a good time with Metroid Prime that it’s making me interested in other 3D shooter games from the era. I liked Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007 on the N64 but mostly dropped off after that. My college roommate 15 years ago was really into Halo 3, but that game was a too much for me at the time. I’m starting to think I need to play shooters chronologically to really get it. What’s some good stuff between the years 2002-2007?

I’m kind of interested in checking out a Resident Evil or a Metal Gear Solid game eventually. Are Resident Evil Ø and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes good places to start those series? I’m feeling drawn to the Gamecube design aesthetic.

Running around a big beautiful world to solve puzzles also really makes me want to finally sit down and play Talos Principle or realMyst to just hang out.

I also just discovered Scarmonde, a 8-bit inspired indie JRPG that looks fantastic and has wonderful colors.

Scarmonde

Too much cool stuff, not enough time.

I know I said in the games we’re playing thread that these throwback experiences aren’t for me, but…gosh, that art is gorgeous to the part of me that’s been rotating the original Final Fantasy in my brain as a background process since I was a child

Timesplitters 2 is the next game in line after GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. One of the best games ever.

Not a shooter but I am obliged to tell you Lunacid feels like it’s from that era (well, slightly before) and am having a grand time exploring. I think you’d like it Tradegood.

Yes, it is always such a gamble, and it seems like a terrible idea for an indie developer to make one of these types of games. While it can seem like you have a template and it’s easier to market, it sets up impossible expectations. If they’re promising an experience like the original FF, it needs to capture what made the original great (which is in the eye of the beholder) but also make something new and unique that pushes the ideas further. The last thing you want someone to think would be “why would I play this when I could just play the original Final Fantasy.”

Every year I pick up games like this one that don’t quite do it for me. But I also want to try meeting it on its own terms if it seems interesting enough!

Maybe it’s shallow but this cover boy makes me less interested in the game

Well if it helps (it should) he quantum leaps into a new character in every level. The first main story mission he’s like a Soviet spy or scientist lady or something.

That actually does change it lol. A super generic guy with slightly distorted proportions and creepy terminator eyes (too far apart) sneering at the camera is just extremely offputting. But quantum leaping into a whole bevvy of playable characters sounds a lot more interesting.

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes good places to start those series?

Personally, if you want to start at the beginning of a franchise I’d recommend the original Metal Gear Solid for the PS1.

I know you already mentioned it but for FPS games I would genuinely recommend Halo. Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3 is a legendary run of games. Bungie was firing on all cylinders. I am absolutely biased though, I adore Halo.

You say you want a GameCube, shooter, from '02-‘07 and are interested in Resident Evil. The absolute layup of an answer is Resident Evil 4. It’s one of the best games ever for a reason. No need to start at 0 - I’ll say it, the Resident Evil games’ stories are incredibly dumb and it’s fine to start at 4 you won’t be missing out.

@Garrett.exe is right on, the Timesplitters games are great.
