Have you played the Half Lives? Half Life 2 is right in the middle of that time span. The original Half Life on PS2 is a good port and has a coop mode where you play as these two
Don’t listen to them Tradegood. I played metal gear solid twin snakes as my first foray because back in the day a GameCube was all I had. And look how I turned out!
I respect @Herb 's generally correct Resident Evil 4 recommendation, but the real first RE game you should play is of course the REmake absolutely without a doubt. Incredibly good game (as is 4, but REmake is the ideal intro)
I actually own this on PS2 (it was my brother’s growing up) but I don’t know how far I made it out of the tutorial zone. I just remember hitting little guys with a crowbar. Unfortunately I don’t have a PS2 any more!
Also have to say if it’s shooters you’re looking for MGS doesn’t really fit the bill. I love the games(I just started up MGS 4 again) but in general the shooting isn’t the focal point. Also the shooting in MGS games is bad.
As others have said I would sooner recommend original Metal Gear Solid and the Resident Evil remake over these. Both games are probably my favorites in their respective series
Idk, I think those games are pretty cool, but I am not a good judge of them for introductions to their series’.
Gamecube has some weird ones. Geist, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Custom Robo, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, The Simpsons: Hit and Run. Also, it’s worth checking out Echoes of course.
I just read an opinion piece from Aftermath about a cool lighthouse in Avowed, then found out the movie Annihilation was a big inspiration for the art direction. I’m starting to build some genuine interest in this one! I love that movie and the book is a favourite of mine. I strongly recommend it if you like eldritch sort of horror.
in the market for a gba game. ive played a lot of em but if people have something they feel strongly on lmk. right now im playing advance wars. maybe ill get back into shining soul 2
i am gonna play pseudoregalia and probably citizen sleeper 2 while on a plane this weekend.
It took a while, but today I finally fought through the middle act of Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward and barreled through to see its ridiculous, rewarding epilogues. I’m still a smidge dizzy from all the plot twists and exposition dumps. Truly fascinating case study on narrative design in games, that was. But I had a good time!
Won’t lie to ya, it’s the tepidly difficult puzzles that mainly attract me to these titles. The setting, dialogue, character writing and convoluted storylines are like window dressing. Fun to experience no doubt, but not the star of the show, and I find them hard to recommend to friends on whatever merits the plots, narrative and overall writing carry. Sometimes I’m fighting through that stuff to get to the fun escape rooms!
So I come to this thread, wondering… Should I plunge into Zero Time Dilemma next? The sentiment online seems divided. I knocked the original 999 game out in a week; the sequel took me a month but was still pretty good. I’m just not sure if I should let a nice thing stay nice or risk leaving the series with a bitter view and a dangling thread.
Probably, realistically, I’ll give it a shot tomorrow evening anyways and see whether I drop it or not.
I was surprised to find I really enjoyed VLR, and it led me to pick up ZTD when it released. ZTD is quicker to playthrough, but nothing will be as breezy as 2D portraits and no voice acting.
I think you kinda know what you’re getting into. For the core game and puzzles there’s only slight diminishing returns. The plot has some alright mids but some low lows. I’m all for some sci-fi cheese, but there’s some real schlock to be found. Maybe that’s fun too?
It’s been a while since I played 999, VLR, and ZTD but I remember thinking that VLR was the best balance of narrative and weird puzzles, the time mechanic etc, but 999 had puzzles that were more intrinsically tied to the plot which made it more interesting. The whole titanic thing is fun too, especially if you watch the movie and see the staircase
I think the latter outcome is more probable. We’re in the middle of a puzzle/mystery game renaissance and there are a ton of great older ones that have been re-released. Have you played any other games in the genre?
No, and I must be out of the loop because I don’t know what rereleases you’re referring to! Hit me with recs and I’ll appreciate the chance to scope ’em out.
Obra Dinn, the Golden Idols, The Roottrees Are Dead are the recent marquee mystery puzzle type games. The Talos Principle games are good as well though the framing there is more mathy rather than detective style. World Of Horror is more of a roguelike despite appearances but has some of the feel and narrative of a mystery/puzzle game. The Famicom detective clubs are good I think if you want something more narrative-heavy (meaning lots of talking). The Hotel Dusk and Another Code games are a little older but good. Then there’s a couple decades of point and click and text parser adventure games out there don’t know how far out you want to get with it.
