Games you're thinking about playing

Hi-octane excitement.

SMT1 is definitely a hard one to get through. I liked the novelty of such a wild concept for a Super Famicom RPG and it’s neat atmosphere and music, but the battles became incredibly grating. They’re incredibly frequent and usually I was spamming autobattle. By the half way point I was more so playing out of a sense of commitment, than joy. SMT2 felt like a bit of a reward for playing my way through SMT1. It was refreshing, because it fixed a bunch of quality of life issues I had with the first one. The later SMTs are rightfully well regarded and I probably like them better, but like I’ve said on here before if I played SMT2 as a kid it would be one of my favorite games.

Thinking 'bout playing Final Fantasy Legend a.k.a. Makai Toushi Sa・Ga for the GameBoy. I need to research some OG GameBoy RPG sprites and UIs for Playdate development, and that series looks like the best I could find. Pokemon Blue+Red too.

Lots of GBC JRPGs, especially after Pokemon got huge.

Any other GB JRPGs out there? And am I going to lose myself to the SaGa series and become one of those ppl??? (I’m open to it.) I’ve never played any of them. I just watched some footage of the GB ones and saw swords and guns and weird stuff (here for weird stuff).

the japanese art of for the series looks so good

thx!!!

I would recommend Dragon Quest Monsters if you haven’t played it. The Lufia game on there is pretty good too as I recall. Can’t speak to SaGa at all but that art makes me want to play it

Really want to check out Monster Hunter Wilds, though the PC performance is worrying. Hopefully the performance gets patched.

Fully back both of these.
I think they’re the best RPGs on the console.
There’s also Sword of Hope 1 and 2 if you’re feeling more of a dungeon crawler.
The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls is a stone cold classic and it’s a shame it never offically came west.
Final Fantasy Adventure and Great Greed are pretty great as well.
For FFA I recommend stocking up on keys (if you think you have too much; add more).
You CAN softlock yourself in the final dungeon.

Shiren GB has some detailed animated 8-way character sprites. Also has some cool menus. I like their fake transparency when the menu is open.
Shiren the Wanderer GB2 is on GBC, but has cutscenes which really go all out with acting out small animations and how it mixes with full screen art. This scene is still crazy cool to me.

Star Ocean Blue Sphere has it all, but in particular its many menus all have extra motion to them. Text eases across the bottom, cursors spin, and the SHOP text bounces up and down playfully. Equipment menus shift the whole screen down to compare like items, etc

Been thinking like what if I got into Digimon? And played all the games? And watched the animes?

Just yesterday I was arranging those boxes on my new shelf. Fun fact, the box for Sa-Ga 2 is ridiculously huge, larger than the two already standardized sizes for japanese gameboy boxes at the time. I’m sure there was a reason why, probably because it was a crowning achievement.

For direct subject player character / environmental stuff:
Sa-Ga, The Legend of Zelda - Link’s Awakening, oracles, Pocket Monsters, Kaeru no Tame Ni wa Naru-- actually, everything by R&D1. especially Wario Land 2. Survival Kids. Heiyankyo Alien, Mercenary Force. Though, in my opinion Sa-Ga and Seiken Densetsu are mostly just FF1-3 sprites plastered onto Game Boy. The backgrounds tiles are what led to Pokemon, in my opinon R/B and G/S are a masterclass. I recommend playing G/S in black and white on Game Boy DMG/Pocket hardware to benefit your playdate development.
That’s just off the top of my head, I could look at my curations and find some. I know Star Ocean on GBC is especially great like a Zelda game.

That’s if you want a based, conventional outlook. I’d say I want more Playdate games that look like B&W Wonderswan games could have.

For the coolest dynamic menus on Game Boy look no further than Game & Watch Gallery, and the Game Boy Camera. There’s also a lot of late GBC games with randomly smooth menus.

I feel like as a giant mecha fan (especially Gundam), I ought to finally play a Super Robot Wars game. I have had a copy of T for Switch for like 6 years now and over that span I have now seen almost every non-Gundam series in the game, so maybe now is the time.

You should play Digimon Cyber Sleuth because it totally rules.

My partner has basically only seen me playing Pokemon, Dragon Quest, and Donkey Kong Country in the 10 months we’ve been together, and the other night she said something along the lines of my video game hobby being entirely based on my inner child or something, and my inner teen ager is being silenced. Casting aside all seriousness (I responded personally to that notion, but this is just a post for IC)

… I really need to play something “teenagery” next, or hardcore/dark/ decidedly not for children. :skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull:

Devil May Cry comes to mind as the most teenagery series.
