Great suggestions, all. We should make a list of the most teenagery games. Or the least childish games.
We played FFVII Rebirth tonight. It’s already become a problem where her seat on the couch is too far away from my 17" CRT so she can’t really enjoy watching me play. So instead I’m going with stuff from my PC that I can put on the big 4K screen.

That Suikoden remake is out just wondering if anyone has tried it and could comment on it’s appearance. I’m not HD2D hater having enjoyed that Live a Live and Star Ocean 2 remake but those Suikoden trailers looked particularly bad.

It looks gross to me. Emulate the originals.

Man I was hoping those were screenshots of an early build or something. They just look like bad/weird phone ports.

I’m totally baffled by the “glow up” description I see in reviews. It’s a glow way down. Just play the originals they look great! Just look up the Clive stuff for 2 so you dont close off the good ending inadvertently (some hostile old school design at work).

I feel like ‘just play the originals’ is the equivalent of telling somebody they should just run Linux when they ask how to do something on a Windows computer. I don’t love some of the changes they made to Suikoden but it sure is a heck of a lot easier to play now than having to get a PS1 emulation setup going (or buying the stupidly priced originals), and not everybody has the juice to do that. It’s not like this version somehow turns in into unplayable garbage or something.

Takes a little doing but you can get them for cheap on the PSN store. Don’t think “play the original” is unattainable advice in the context of this forum. I take your point though but consider 1) the “remasters” are expensive in and of themselves and 2) they straight up massacred the art wtf 3) imo Suikoden II is a great game and it’s especially worth playing it undiminished. It’s not just another jrpg I don’t think

I wonder if the new localization could make up for the aesthetic difference. I love those games but the English script is extremely bad. I’m sure some people have nostalgia for it but it wouldn’t take much for a once-over to make the game much more coherent and pleasant to read

I just wish they would include the ability to revert to the original graphical presentation in these remakes, especially at the price point that’s being charged. I’m not a fan of “HD-2D”, the tilt-shift effect is too strong in most games that use it for me, but with Suikoden in particular, the backgrounds look like those bad early Square mobile ports or something out of RPG Maker. At least DQ3 felt like they rebuilt the visuals from the ground up and put in effort.

Half the fun is guessing which spelling of Jowy/Jowey/Joey will show up next!

i am of two minds as an aspirational suikoden player. on the one hand, the remasters look really bad. even as someone who admits to liking the 2d-hd look, these are terrible. @mack41 nailed it by comparing it to an rpg maker game. somehow every screenshot i see looks worse than the one that came before.

on the other hand, i am a little lord fauntleroy and am very easily swayed by both tiny QOL features and the prospect of not having to fiddle with an emulator–i’ve used emulators before of course, but i don’t think i’ve ever played a beefy rpg start to finish on one. i’m probably being too squeamish in thinking there’s any risk of losing progress etc there. the biggest draw to the remaster is an updated translation, but as someone who doesn’t have a comparable baseline who knows how much it would matter to me.

for now, i have the psx version of suikoden ii loaded up on the steam deck.

as I have already stated, the PlayStation versions of Suikoden and Suikoden II are available for purchase on PSN and playable on PS3/Vita/PSP as long as you follow the multi-step process involving purchasing PSN gift cards (the payment processing system no longer accepts debit). Went through this myself to get an old Hot Shots Golf game going and while it was borderline excruciating, it did work and was less painful than looking at a single Suikoden Remaster screenshot

I’m afraid I have none of those systems, old boy

I watched a couple of reviews last night and comparison videos and you’re right a lot of people seem fine with the graphics. It’s really bizarre.

I didn’t want to write off the game based on a couple of screenshots, but reviewing footage it looks pretty inconsistent. Sometimes the remake looks pretty good, but in other cases some floor textures and bloom effects really ruin certain scenes.

My impression of Suikoden 1 (1995) on PlayStation so far is that it looks like an RPG Maker (1995) game in the best way (1995)

My impression of Suikoden Remake (2025) is that it looks like an rpg maker VX (2005) game.

Suikoden and Suikoden II, now with 50% more bloom lighting and 100% less soul.

Just an amazing list, thank you so much!! Bookmarked and will dig in.

RE: Suikoden HD, I shared some of my live impressions as I played it (and then proceeded to return it) last night in this thread:

Basically, I think the HD versions look super awkward and bad and have very strange choices in them. It’s funny, comparing to Eiyuden Chronicles, it looks much worse. I think HD-2D games need to have 2D pixel sprites for characters within a 3D environment to look nice. That’s my takeaway. The Suikoden HD maps with the 2D rasterized non-pixel art backgrounds look terrible to me.

Has anyone played Legasista? It’s a PS3 dungeon crawler I had never heard of until recently when trolling through the PS3 store for weird gems to buy before the store is inevitably shut down for good.

I am wondering if it is worth US$9.99 or not. Seems really interesting at least for ten bucks. Gotta give NIS a little credit, they try weird stuff sometimes still.

The name Alto Straiter is awful and incredible.
