Games you're thinking about playing

well if any of you read my posts about finding a horror game for us to play on my pc, etc. etc.:
since we watch the walking dead (almost finished with the series finale) and she’s been playing the walking dead switch game, why not just play The Last Of Us?
I’ve never played it, I know very little about it, and yet I somehow am in the belief that it’s adjacent to the walking dead somehow so I am installing it asap.

I have a tendency to talk a lot of trash on the last of us.
However, I DO like it, and when i do that I’m being a little annoying to myself and people around me.
I still haven’t played part 2, and i probably should.
Go be cool and have fun with it.

Yeah I checked this out myself since I bought a bunch of PS1 games when it was believed that the store was going to shut down. Turns out I have both Suikoden 1 and 2 downloaded on my Vita!

I liked part 2 quite a lot but it definitely felt too long. It’s around 40 hours which just seems excessive for a game like this. They also pulled some absurd shit with how much they pushed the PS4. Thems some BIG graphics.

The length is what’s putting me off it tbh.

I’ve been thinking a lot about playing either: Radiata Stories or Dual Hearts.
Both games I’ve been interested in for 20ish years.
I probably should finally finish Nier Automata before i start either though.

I hated TLOU from the start before it was cool. How else would I go this long without knowing anything about it? My dad won’t shut up telling me I have to watch the show. I’m just giving it a shot for the first time due to the reasons stated above!

I was regulating after work today by browsing the used games at a nearby store and saw a copy of the 2nd volume of the Capcom Classics Collection on PS2. I was curious what games were on it, and the manual was included so I looked at the games list. And I became immediately enamored by the concept of QUIZ AND DRAGONS.

This game looks so cool. You traverse through a board game world and win RPG battles by answering quiz questions written in 1992. My prime time viewing this evening has been this game play video:

Has anyone here played this? I could see the repetitive drudgery of the standard RPG battle feeling more like a spectator sport with this game. Cool to think of it being in arcades and/or bars.

Are either of the Monster Hunter Stories games any good? I was thinking about checking one of those out.

I like em both! Don’t go into them expecting Monster Hunter gameplay-- they’re RPGs on the lighter side of difficulty, with only the world in common with MH.

I am interested in playing Castlevania! I beat SotN about 7 years ago and loved it. I didn’t finish the upside down part though, it seemed sort of optional, am I remembering right or did I miss the best part?

But regardless, I’m interested in more Castlevania but don’t know where to go next. I’m interested in the old style, Iga style, and even 3D style. Can anyone help guide me? It doesn’t seem like the plot matters between them, right?

Old style: You can’t go wrong with good ol’ Castlevania 1. It’s not as obtuse as 2 and isn’t as difficult or complicated as 3. You could also just jump ahead to Rondo.

Iga style: Aria of Sorrow is the one to play. All of those GBA and DS ones are interesting, though.

3D style: I like Lament of Innocence. I haven’t played so many 3d ones, though.

I don’t think so? I think the plot is sort of a “there if you want it” thing. I couldn’t tell you any overarching plot other than “dracula came back again”.

Thanks!! I’m gonna start with 1 today then. And I’ve got a PC Engine mini arriving next week and that has Rondo on it. Then Aria!

On a similar note, it’s surprisingly Konami hasn’t released SotN, Rondo, and the 3D games on Switch and PC. Maybe one day.

I recently played Rondo for the first time.. I’m not someone who regularly goes for 100% on games, so it says something that I couldn’t help myself but 100% that one. It’s really a 16-bit classic.

After Aria, the next best Igarashi one is Order of Ecclesia, but Dawn of Sorrow is a direct sequel, so you could go either way.

I also think III and Super IV are really interesting games. III plays with the idea of multiple characters that you can hotswap at any time. Super IV is a kind-of reinagining of the first game, so it might be interesting to slot in. It does some really interesting things with Simon’s whip and SNES’s Mode 7.

The inverted castle in SotN is a bit like a new game+. More stuff for high level players. A lot of cool bosses and weapons - along with the “true” ending. Though it is a pain to navigate. Worth it if you loved Symphony and wanted more of that specific flavor of Vania’d castles.

Amazing, thank you all. I played IV for 10 mins last night before bed and loved how I could wiggle the whip around after it whips and thought “I should really give this series a fair shot”

What’s up with the GB one on Switch Online? The character sprite is huge lol

I say steer clear of the GB games. Curiosities at best.

How are you playing these? The anniversary collection which is on everything also has Bloodlines/Next Generation, which is absolutely worth sampling just as much as the others. At the beginning of this year I decided to finally get all the way through the first NES Castlevania in that collection—relying on the built-in save states—and came away thinking that collection is a good way to play all of those.

If at some point the first Lords of Shadow is on sale for cheap you might check that one out. It’s not great by any means but an interesting artifact of its time and it brings enough to the table that it’s worth a look. Strongly recommend against its sequels, however

I have the Anniversary collection on Switch and the GBA collection too. Glad to hear it’s a good way to dive in! I’ve also got SotN on Xbox 360 and PS4, which I do want to replay at some point too!

Great to hear about save states. I truthfully haven’t played yet alone beaten many 8-bit or 16-bit games aside from shmups, so I’m a bit intimidated. But I think not having a 1CC mindset, so to speak, will help.

What’s up with Castlevania on the Sharp X68k? Love the X68k shmups I’ve played.

Definitely yeah. Speaking just for myself I can’t imagine putting in the time required to beat one of these games without some kind of extracurricular rewind/checkpoint feature, particularly in later levels. The final two bosses took me maybe half an hour or more each, and I was cheating.

You should play it and report back!
