Good raps

I saw Shing02 this past summer with a friend and had a great time! I had wanted to see him for a long time and even more luckily the venue was less than 10 minutes from my house, super glad to cross that off the list!

Found this earlier this week and been enjoying it. @p3ters recommended Clear Soul Forces in here before and SkyBlew definitely in a similar wheelhouse.

Also while I’m in here, glad to see Milo get some love! I got to see his last show as Milo in Madison WI back in like 2018/18, glad he has continued to do stuff as RAP Ferreira

On a different note, I have been crazy into Eyedea this past year or so. I have listened to him since like 2016, but moved up to the Twin Cities in the past couple years and have been really feeling his music since moving here. As far as tracks go, I’m going to link a few different examples as he was a great freestyle battler but also crazy with storytelling tracks. I’m also going to link one of his final performances, which is one of the hardest to watch concerts I’ve seen (he died of an overdose a little over a year after this). Having trouble getting the embeds to show up as I would like

that’s awesome - i missed seeing pase rock years back in miami (apparently substantial has played out that way too?)
small club would get some cool acts like that though, saw emancipator there like 10 years back

Okay this is very popular and basic but I haven’t heard a lady do a rhaspy voiced trap/crunk style track in a while, and maybe I’m just not clued in but it was fun to hear.

Alright. from newest to oldest
Sorry in advance for the long post
-Current decade-
The absolute hit last year was Team Tomodachi, remixed all year long by various groups and rappers.

Even hololive covered Team Tomodachi.

Gal culture is all over this scene:

This seems to be the current style, 3 years ago there was already this:

KREVA is a refference for all this people, he has been rapping for almos three decades now.

RYKEYDADDYDIRTY is a half japanese half kenyan dude.

If you’re into more chill rap, NAMEDARUMA

-2010s (i particularly didn’t like this decade so much)-

The star of this decade for me is chelmico

AKLO

Ozworld

Remember vaporwave??? well… this dudes were into it.

i love Valknee, this video is the most dope of this post

-2000’s-
2000’s is my favourite era because that’s what i grew up with.
These tend to be a little more pop-ish. Think of it as similar to the usher ashanti kelly rowland era.

Gotta start with m-flo. They started their carreer in the 90s but really crushed the 2000s. They did A LOT of features.

VERBAL, the mc from m-flo, was an exchange student in USA during 80’s-90’s hip hop boom. He learned a lot and certainly took that to Japan. He was friends with Nujabes and was interviewed for the Nujabes documentary.

It’s not a coincidence that he was on the Kanye-West-produced Teriyaki Boyz supergroup. Kanye put the top dogs together, called pharrell to co-produce the album… and chose the absolute worst song for the The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift movie.

Here’s a Teriyaki Boyz non-movie song

RIP SLYME was great. Fast paced, sick beats.

Gotta shout out mihimaru GT because of Osu Tatakae Ouendan. The GT on the duo’s name is because miyake loved Gran Turismo.

HANNYA was (and still is) the deliquent comedy guy. I’d say this clip didn’t age well but i laugh a little to this day HOW IS THIS ON YT??

If you’re into beer drinking and chillin’, Ketsumeishi is for you. Their songs are beautiful.

-90’s-
Welp, i’ll start with m-flo again (because i don’t know the 90’s too well and m-flo did celebrate their 25th anniversary last year.)

Look at this crappy 3D. But Lisa and Verbal’s vocals on this track are supreme. The verse after the chorus is just insane.

Gotta have Rhymester on this post.

A few sources say that DA YO NE was the 1st japanese rap hit.

A few years ago buddha brand got my attention for it’s name lol

That’s it.

I actually feel the same way about the 2010s - 90s to 2000s were cool, then it was kinda an “eh” zone where things felt commercial and uninspired, then the last 7 years or so (kinda since trap infected things) it’s been on the upswing.

Amazing post, @marxseny

RIP SLYME were indeed the best. And any list of great J-rap from the last few years needs to include Trap City Himeji by Shurkn Pap, so here it is:

Been meaning to listen to this forever and it’s actually sick:

Dalek - From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots (2002).

Feels way ahead of its time.

Ask me again in a couple of months, but I’ve been listening to Madvillainy basically every day atp and Rhinestone Cowboy might be my favorite song off the album. The crowd sounds coming in an out + the “no no no enough” before coming back to finish the song is so good.
