Gotta discuss ’em all!™ (The Pokémon Thread)

In gen 1, there is no wrong choice. Bulbasaur is the most overpowered simply because of a glitch that is now known where using toxic then leech seed causes the leech seed damage and recovery to combine with toxic which is insane. Squirtle is basically easy/beginner mode, charmander is big advanced mode and bulbasaur is intermediate I would say.

Nidoking isn’t as good in Gold as it was in Gen 1. Nidoqueen is defensive and not as strong. *there is nothing like a nidoking in gen 1. it’s a god-tier early game power spike. The next one is alakazam as soon as it’s available.

@Chekhonte wow nice thrift find. how much was it? also we wear the same damn pants… @rootfifthoctave also

5 dollars. It’s in such good condition that I suspect it could be a forgery. I have no other copy to compare it to. Even the case is pristine

Alright. I tried to get everything in good light. Of you need other details I can do closer zooms and even break it my 10x optical comparator. I also just realized that I took these under a 3000k bulb. I can take them again under an ottlite which is more color balanced. The color reproduction of the label is probably important

Ok that actually looks let much the same. My phones color correction did its job.

I’ve decided to clock in on firered. Although every time I want to see the old character sprites but I think I’ll go for a bit more modern of a gameplay loop.

Currently going Mankey Pikachu Squirtle towards Mt Moon, where I will clefairy hunt for awhile. It’s been 10+ years probably since I’ve done the original games so this’ll be interesting.

They should give you the running shoes at the beginning though.

Dude. You just got the score of 2025. That’s better condition than you would find on ebay. That’s near-mint. That’s a very expensive and overpriced game you got for five clams. That’s one of the greatest games of all time. You have hundreds of hours of fun in your hakoniwa (箱庭). That’s awesome dude. It’s legit. It’s also the sought after early press which has the white ESRB logo. I’m jealous. I’ll give you ten bucks for it.

This is a sure sign that it’s authentic. Though the PCB could be inspected, I wouldn’t suspect it’s been swapped. Though you may really want to replace the SRAM battery so you don’t lose your save fifty hours in. Enjoy.

I don’t wanna be a downer. But I think the things you already said in your above post are pointing to you just playing the original.

I plan on replaying Fire Red only after I finish playing through Gen III with Ruby.

If you don’t want to lose momentum on your run, ignore this post. If you want a reason to just play the original, then watch the video below.

Fire Red has no more modern of a gameplay loop than the original. If anything, it has broken the loop of the original. On the surface it seems great, and you know, it can be. But underneath it was very poorly planned. It’s at odds with itself.

Also, you can’t even get Nidoran in Viridian City, which pisses me off so much.

Yeah! I added that because you found an rca victor image a crew weeks ago. I thought you would appreciate that

Also here is a restoration of all of Ken Sugimori’s Gen 1 Art
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16bSaqcst0tOMsz4rGBzPK_iZvgx4DZJX

And basically, if you want my opinion, Gen 2 was already a remake of Gen 1, and the problem lies in the relationship (or lack thereof) of Gen 3 and Gen 1. Gen 3 was a reboot. Yellow is great!

As for that guy, lew2, he is an asshat. His work is interesting and cool, but his claims are so fucked that it outweighs it most of the time. And he’s a huge jerkwad about it. Case example of toxicity in the Pokémon fandom imo. He generates it by being presumptuous and insulting.

I couldn’t imagine playing through Kanto without the Sevii Islands. I don’t think Pokemon’s ever had a better post-game, except maybe Colosseum, which just continued the story. The Sevii Islands have way more to do than (Heart) Gold/(Soul) Silver’s post-game, way more interesting.

“You can go to Kanto!” the defenders yell, repeatedly, at all valid criticisms.

“This is absolutely the strictest they’ve ever been about what pokemon are available to the player and when”
Oh you sweet summer child…
Also she says multiple times that you need to “100% complete the postgame content” to trade pokemon in/out and that’s just… not true? Like at all? You don’t have to do most of Six Island, any of Seven Island, Cerulean Cave, or the Elite Four Rematch
I get the complaint about the pokedex. I’m not sure I’d want to revisit Kanto now without the new evolutions and new mechanics we’ve seen in subsequent generations. What motivation do I have to use Primeape on my team when I might get the chance to use Annihilape in a future gen?

FR/LG was my first (and only) experience with Kanto, so I don’t have the originals to compare them to. I will say that I do not find most of her points very compelling.
“The new pokemon have abilities that cause poison/paralysis and it’s annoying to run back to the pokemon center” is kinda absurd since the game gives you oodles of cash to buy items… and the poke flute… and also just gives you lots of items.
“I had to train up a pokemon and I had already traded my strong pokemon to Pokemon Box” …sounds like a you issue.
“Abilities make battles more complicated” …girl. Like… girl… come on…
I really don’t understand her point that Kanto is underdeveloped/hollow compared to Hoenn and subsequent regions. I wholeheartedly disagree. I think the “monster” aspects of the design and the undercurrent of humans vs. environment e.g. Eeveelutions with radiation; designs like Muk, Weezing, Electrode, Magneton, etc. are way more compelling thematically and tell more of a story about Kanto than a filling a region with dogs and birds and fish and a shallow European filter over the towns. I also think the more naturalistic towns in Kanto feel more lived-in than the fantastical ones in later gens. Though, of course, like many things regarding Pokemon, the Gamecube games did it best and get zero credit for it.

I’m glad you like it. When I play it I will enjoy it. but I also respectfully disagree with everything you said. At times seems like an emotional reaction, which is understandable if it’s one of your favorite games. Though I also don’t agree with everything said in that video. I think she makes a strong argument, but I only posted it to get the point across that it’s just not the same experience as the original.

“Abilities make battles more complicated” …girl. Like… girl… come on…

oversimplification of what she said.

FR/LG was my first (and only) experience with Kanto, so I don’t have the originals to compare them to.

pretty much says it all

I’m not sure I’d want to revisit Kanto now without the new evolutions and new mechanics we’ve seen in subsequent generations.

not me, I hate that stuff.

I really don’t understand her point that Kanto is underdeveloped/hollow compared to Hoenn and subsequent regions.

yeah Idunno I just interpreted as her saying that FR/LG weren’t as developed as R/S. Everyone should know gen 1 had the most adult themes and cool undertones going on, more than any other that would come after. But that brings up another aspect that the remake sterilized.

No idea what you’re on about with the gamecube games doing anything best. They’re cool as shit but they barely count and were made by completely different people who didn’t even care about rpgs so they need to be judged by completely different standards otherwise they fall apart. but that’s a whole different conversation.

Anyways sorry if you’re offended by the video. I believe in taking games on their own terms and deciding to enjoy them, which I will do when I do an intellectual playthrough of Fire Red soon. I have played fire red a ton, I preordered the game from Electronics Boutique, got the booklet preorder bonus, and I own six GBA wireless adapters, but every playthrough I’ve had of fire red has felt bland compared to the original, though again that’s not to say it’s without any value whatsoever. I personally would never consider it a replacement. it’s a different game. that’s basically all anyone is saying. Satoshi Tajiri’s touch is missing.

If Fire Red and Colosseum are your favorites, that’s cool, those are unique picks and very IC of you. They are completely different games though. I think Dracula X68000 is way cooler and more fun than Rondo of Blood. I played them both multliple times before forming that opinion though. It’s because I want a castlevania to take place entirely in the castle not 5 other places before that. The postgame argument is one I find pretty annoying.

But anyways @freakscene now I think you should just play fire red and don’t let me convince you otherwise, cause now that this is being argued I don’t want to feel like I’m fighting for your choice one way or another.

I ended up just kinda hunting for clefairy for 45 minutes last night so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

That’s kind of hilarious that this dude who got put on my for you page with the art archive is some sort of infamous dick, I would’ve had no clue.

Wrt your point about gen 2, honestly the number one reason I played gen 1 this time is to not just default to playing Crystal again.

They’re maybe my fourth favorite games in the series? Not really something I’m laying down my life to defend here… I don’t appreciate your insinuation.
Also, I’m kinda out on Pokemon as a series at this point. It’s hard to scratch the same itch but I play other RPGs now. My bemusement is that these games are already pretty simple and she wants to push the pendulum in the direction of making them even simpler

The GameCube games are ones that I’d actually stump for and have an emotional attachment to. They’re made by former members of the Dragon Quest team, so I would say that they’re made by people who care about RPGs. As I’ve moved on to more complicated RPGs I feel like they align the best with other games of the genre and hold up better than most of the mainline

I’m posting this here too so the right eyes see it, this cute Pokédex megablock kit is on sale for 18 dollars at Target. It is 4 swappable lenticular images, I think. The green 1 starters and eevee and maybe pikachu. I haven’t opened it yet.

I was trying to be nice and considerate. I don’t really like arguing. I consider you a friend. Don’t watch her colosseum video unless you want to rage, cause she criticized that one pretty hard. Like I said I think it’s cool, I also preordered it from EB Games and got the jirachi bonus disc. Anyways I’d throughf I’d heard tales told many times over that colosseum was the Dev’s first rpg, but maybe I misremembered and it was actually that they had never played or cared about Pokémon before. Either way that puts it out of the Gen 1/2 discussion in my opinion because we’re talking definitive satoshi tajiri works.
