Gameboy Printer rules.
So I missed Scarlet & Violet completely when they first came out after the wave of overwhelming negative buzz around them, mainly regarding performance. I’ve been wanting to jump back into Pokémon. How are they now after a couple of years of patches? I imagine they’re still janky, but as long as the game isn’t crashing, if I accept that going in, will I have a good time? I actually quite enjoyed Legends Arceus.
I think you could have a good time in ScarVi. I didn’t experience any crashes, for sure, but it is a game where most things I like about it come with a janky flipside. For example, I like the fashions you can collect for your character, but the shop menus chug kind of a lot. You can have one of your Pokemon run around with you, but they can’t keep up with you if you run at regular speed. And maybe the biggest thing that irked me is that they lowered the “obedience ceiling” for every badge. It used to be something like level 20, 50, 70 every other badge, but now it’s only 5 levels for every badge. This kinda forced me to speed through the gyms, which was annoying, but after that I was able to chill out and explore. And there’s two other kinds of “gym” aside from the regular ones, so it’s not like you’ll run out of things to do. And finally, this could be good or bad depending how you look at it (I say it’s good), you can almost entirely ignore this game’s sparkly hat gimmick. I never once used it aside from maybe a tutorial moment. The game sounds rough now that I’m looking at it, but I legitimately had a good time with it. The core loop of Pokemon is still there, you just have to deal with some nonsense to get there.
At the end of the day, the Pokémon formula is so perfect at its core I’ll have a good time. I actually don’t completely hate the idea of the level cap being lower because I like having to switch up my teams and play with a wider variety but I definitely can see why it would be an issue. I think I’ll give it a shot soon.
i found SV to be utterly devoid of charm. none of the new mons were for me. i had a better time with SwSh but tbh SMTVV and occasional revisits to gen2/3 satisfy my pokémon appetite these days
I started playing Pokemon Blue since Treefroggy was talking about Pokemon again in the Monsters thread. I’d played Gold in October, getting to the Elite four, but not beating them before deciding to take a break due to being extremely busy with IRL stuff since the end of November. I have slightly more free time now, so I’ve made the perhaps dubious decision to play through Gen I and perhaps trade some of the pokemon I raise into Gold to help me take on the Elite four there. I have also been contemplating trying for all 150 pokemon in Blue, though if I do do this, it will probably take forever. If anyone ends up starting up Pokemon Red sometime in the next few months (or has a dormant savefile) and wants to trade (i.e. by sending each other save files) please let me know! I guess that also applies to Silver too…
Unlike Gold and Silver, which I’d emulated a few times in middle school and high school, I haven’t played Blue or Red since I was in elementary school and had access to my brother’s copy (he moved out when I was 11), so I’m slightly surprised by a few things, like the ability to switch pokemon before your opponent plays their next pokemon, which they seem to have removed in gen ii only to reintroduce later?
You could also trade some Pokémon from gold into blue… breed some fellas.
Switch / Set has been an option in settings since the first games. Based Satoshi.
Tip for blue version… get nidoran west of viridian city and evolve to nidoking asap.
Also Gen 1 move sets are like blank slates, TM use is important. Thunderbolt is especially one of the most pivotal TMs in the game.
Paralysis and especially sleep are all you need most of the time.
Unwarranted advice whewps
Who’s your starter?
oh wow, i must have accidentally changed to set in Gold when I started, which sure made it trickier to get weaker pokemon EXP during battles before I acquired EXPshare (though maybe it’s better that way, as I now no longer take shift for granted).
When I played as a kid my brother insisted I pick Bulbasaur since otherwise “the first two gyms are too hard”. This was probably well meaning advice, but now that I am free to live my own life, I picked Charmander. It seems like as good an excuse as any to train different pokemon early. For instance, I finally tried out leveling up Caterpie and Weedle to their complete evolutions, just to see what the bug life might feel like. I’d always completly written off bug pokemon when I played these games in the past.
I already have a Nidoking in Gold, so I will probably try training a Nidoqueen, even though it sounds like its not as strong.
Blue has so much subtly haunting stuff in a way they never really found again in those games. Not to creepypasta. i also might smoke up firered soon
I just found a copy at the goodwill, I need to acquire a gabeboy
desert island supply tbh
Oh wait I was under the impression that the SP could not play game boy games but I appear to be wrong. I need to do some rummaging
Oh we’re on like Donkey Kong
Jiminy Christmas. Looking at the picture on my phone I just tried fold it in half to put it to sleep
if that SP were more scuffed and you were playing Blue version then i would have sworn that was a picture of my lap in my corduroy trousers lmao
I am you. Jorge, my younger self, do you see now how the lines between reality and fiction blur even further with time? The stories you weave, the labyrinths you construct in your mind, they are not mere fantasies but echoes of a future you cannot yet grasp
An even better reference. Dang it note I want to watch all the David lynch movies I own on that overhead projector screen.
One thing about Gen I that I’ve found suprisingly appealing is the lack of an EXP meter during battles. In the same way that being able to turn the page count off on e-readers somehow results in reading being a lot more enjoyable for me, I find grinding much more tolerable when I have no idea how much EXP my pokemon have.
I can understand that but I’m a big number goes up dummy. You can blame for the decline of the series.
I know Pokémon Go is a scourge. I play only because a bunch of now ex volition employees get together on Wednesday for raids. I sometimes transfer special ones to Pokémon home to use in actual Pokémon games.by some miracle I got a shiny mew. I’m struggling to decide what to do with it. I pretty much only play Pokémon for the rare shiny.
