We have a Heavy Music thread for all things 'evy me’ol, but we don’t have a thread for punk and/or hardcore music. A few of us in the introduction thread agreed that it probably wasn’t worth having a dedicated thread for punk since it’d be populated by the same folks in the metal thread. I agree with this. However, in the true spirt of punk I am bucking authority and making one anyway.
To kick us off, I will post some favorites of my own, starting with something near and dear to my heart….Japanese punk music. I know it might sound typical for someone on the insert credit forums to like the Japanese variety of something, but Japanese punk music is REALLY good and very distinct imo. There is a blend of speed, aggression, finesse, and melody that inspired countless others.
First is my favorite: Death Side. So many bangers, let me start with this one:
Second up is Crude. I credit this band for getting me into Japanese punk when I picked up this comp in a Toronto record store at a young age because it was a CD and photocopied pamphlet stuck inside a ziplock bag selling for $15….which was a lot at the time and was all the more alluring for that reason:
And no discussion about Japanese punk would be complete without a mention of GISM (RIP Sakevi). My alternate idea for this thread title was All Punks is Gamers:
For those unfamiliar with GISM, I recommend doing a nice Google search for some of the antics during their heyday. I don’t know how many are apophrycal, but as a youngster I loved hearing stories about flame throwers set off in front of audiences and bulldozers driven through the sides of venues.
These Japanese bands went on to inspire some of my favorite American bands, too, like Tragedy. And then there’s bands like Paranoid from Sweden, who took a very direct inspiration.
But that’s just a type of punk music from one country. I could go on (and will), but I’ll pause there.
Do you like punk music? Do you like going to shows? What types of punk music do you want to share with the world? Let me know!
