I have never seen the dithering on that bush look like anything but a dithered bush - if it‘s ever been something else I’d love to see it! I remember as a kid being like “what's with these little squares!?” I couldn't tell it was a bush when I was younger!!
I guess it fits with the checkerboard motif of the classic Sonic environmental design, also evident in the columns and the box art, so perhaps it just felt correct.
Here's a raw capture of the pixels in a PC emulator:

Shows how they attempted to create a bulbous effect with the gradients on each block in a checkerboard pattern, but this would also cause the blending to be less even and see through. Compare that Kirby's Dreamland 3 on the SNES which had single colors in columns for it's transparent foreground shrubbery:

I believe Sonic 1's waterfall is also in columns, so perhaps that would have been a better approach, again unless they were intentionally trying for the checkerboard motif.
Edit: yep they are columns - also made me notice I forgot to enable the sharp bilinear shader to even out the pixels since I updated retroarch. That's why they were uneven in the Kirby screenshot

Yeah, columns are how you get stuff to look either transparent (warlock!) or extra detailed (as in the case of vectorman where it was used to imply detail as well as transparency.)
Oooh, this is a fun thread! I literally just got my desk all put together.

Nabbed that little 9" Sony KV-9PT40 CRT from a pair of artists who originally used a bunch of them for art installations. They would set them up, show them, and then put them in a box. It's in tremendous condition, with the original stand and remote. So cool. It has a single composite input and mono audio. I decided to get a headphone amplifier and run it straight out of the MiSTer for all of that high-quality straight-from-the-board goodness.

Got a few SNAC adapters to play around with genuine controllers (NES, SNES, Genesis 3-button, and PSX!) and otherwise use an Xbox controller for controlling the MiSTer and the Steam Deck. I've also collected all of the Nintendo Online Controllers (NES, SNES, Genesis, N64), and have a few genuine N64 controllers, a Gamecube controller, and a couple Switch Pro controllers. That's about the extent of my hoarding tendencies 😅
Oooh, and I also have an N64 and PlayStation, which I'll plug into the CRT on occasion! Otherwise, I swap that large display for use with my Steam Deck, my Switch, and my laptop. Recently bought a Keychron Q1 Pro to really kickstart a mechanical keyboard addiction. The poster is an original piece from a CalArts classmate of my sibling, the photos are clipped out of a magazine by said sibling. They're the coolest.

Another recent project I'm proud of: _pedal wall_.

@“jordanthornquest”#p122362 That's gorgeous! Looks like you need to find better listening material on your iPad though…
I've got the keychron q6 (complete with the knob! and full numpad). These things rule!!

Abominable podcast, truly, they never talk about what they're playing "right now"

@“deepspacefine”#p122386 I’ve got the keychron q6 (complete with the knob! and full numpad)
Bless the knob!! I'm tempted to find a separate numpad or a model with the numpad on the left. I always feel like I have to push my mouse too far away otherwise. Although those 60% keyboards also look... _very nice_. I really like the red switches on this Q1, they're smooth and fun to type on without being too clacky.
@“jordanthornquest”#p122362 Nice! I‘ve got one of those lil 9PT40s as well but it’s not currently in use. I love the idea of using it with a MiSTer and a dedicated headphone amp though!
also,
@"jordanthornquest"#p122371 [I have a feeling we'd get along quite well lol](https://cdn.bsky.social/imgproxy/ndWKM4v4UOkCcK7oemt2kM2Q3mPNetPCh3n0W4Ns3d8/rs:fit:2000:2000:1:0/plain/bafkreigidaso33jjwdjatosqnkaaivpd6eenymh6leqxaqy3w7lxvzfuue@jpeg)
Work‘s been OK, so I treated myself to a piece of hardware I’ve always dreamed of and I‘ll be damned it does make me happy: a pristine Neo Geo Pocket Color in Clear
So lemme know if anyone needs a horoscope (I’ll also put my ol‘ Blue NGPC with the box up for sale or trade here on IC soon as I get the time, if anyone’s looking)
@“andrewelmore”#p122453 YEAAAH tremendous pedal wall!! We‘re fast friends now. I’m taking this as an opportunity to post pedalboard.

@“jordanthornquest”#p122493 Oh nice! I recently picked up a Microcosm as well lol. Also a Hell Melter and an RV-5 lol. Found myself disabled recently and reached the conclusion that playing live isn‘t a thing I’m likely to ever do again, so I kinda just ditched the entire pedalboard concept and now I grab them individually as needed and set them up on a desk to record or play. It‘s worked out pretty well, and now I’m much more likely to experiment with them on synths and drum machines and whatnot. I‘m pretty sure there’s a music-making containment thread here somewhere . . .
We should all just meet in a park & whip these clear NGPCs out of our coats & hold up them up to the sky until lightening flows through them just like the Quickening. We are not boy, that's for sure
(@"treefroggy"#449 that translucent yellow slim one is like the king of NGPs, it's beautiful)
@“tokucowboy”#p122616 we need link cables, looks like none of us have any,
Best handheld for sitting outside on a nice day…
