lol, I had a friends mom buy me the giger book with that image in it when I was 11 or 12. She was a witch and encouraged my rebellion. It was strictly forbidden in my indoctrinated family. I had so much contraband. I didn’t know it was for an album cover.

platonic way to encounter hr giger

There was a controversy because the singer got married in a church. (I think) who knows. I have done a fair amount of hallucinogens between now and then

shout outs to anyone that doesn’t think “boy band” when seeing the name “Incubus”

That’s type o negative. My Detroit GF had an aunt who at the time was champing at the bit for a play girl issue with him in it

I was curious so looked up the aggregated m-a review rankings and that album ends up way down the order. I guess it got review-sniped a few times

Oh interesting. I’ve found the actual MA review “scores” to sometimes be hit or miss, usually because the sample sizes are quite small. To MA’s credit, you need to acrually write a review to give it a score, so I think it filters out a lot of people who would otherwise score things highly.

Good list tho—funny enough spectral voice is like 3/4 members of blood incantation lol. I liked that amethyst record quite a bit and begrudgingly also enjoyed the Inquisition record.

That Attic record rules! Awesome Mercyful Fate worship with a good helping of their own style and more brutal stuff thrown in.

Is this the post-black metal scene in the “Sounds like post-rock but black metal” blackgaze sense? (Deafheaven, Alcest et al)

or post-black metal as in the black metal bands who, in the style of post-punk, went on to more experimental takes on the genre, or even completely eschewed it? (Arcturus, Sigh, Dodheimsgard, et al)

either would work in context ;)

either way, I second the Trhä recommendation

related, there was a new Wardruna album out last month and I only just heard it for the first time yesterday – it’s pretty good

Gonna answer for @Kuro_b and assume they meant the former. At least that’s what I took by it.

Personally enjoy the second grouping of bands far more!

Former for sure. I enjoy the latter much more, although I enjoy Alcest. Big fan of the three latter bands.

I think I’d personally call the latter three avant-garde or experimental black metal instead of post black metal. Genre nitpicking is tedious though I apologize

You’re good, I was just having a bit of fun :) .

You’re right that the term Avant-Garde Metal is more common today (though paradoxically I find it to be more commonly used with bands that found a slightly off-centre sound and mostly don’t deviate from it.)

But it always amused me that these two meanings of “Post-Black Metal” were in common use at the same time. It’s like hearing “Zelda’s not an RPG, it’s an adventure!” today, as if there’s not also point and click/text games.

Personally I like the term “Weird Black Metal” for that scene (circa 2000). that I first saw in the Black Metal Rainbows in the articles about Fleurety, and the oral history of 666 International.

I dusted off some cassettes and found a band I haven’t listened to in ages. C Average or sometimes cave rage.

Two of the nicest period in the gd world, Jon Merithew and Joe Preston. Real shy genuine people. I traded Metroid Prime for c average’s catalog. It was a bunch of cd’s that were supposed to go to radio stations and the like. The ones that have the notches cut out of the case. They made s some good music. The start is 100% Jon doing a Longmont Potion Castle bit. Takes off his prank calls were super popular with bands touring and they trade and dub them. This song has a if Glenn Branca was metal vibes

Melt Banana rips!! I highly recommend listening to the whole album. It clocks in at close to 25 minz. It really builds an excellently rowdy groove. Through headphones I’m impressed with how many sonic elements they cram in while retaining a fist-pumping core.

If anyone is looking for more high-pitched vocals but paired with something more industrial and blackened check out the body

Not exactly heavy by this thread’s standards, but I’m a big Ghost fan and they have a new song out today, album in April. I really don’t like when singles come out like 6-8 months before the album so I’m very pleased.

Nice!
Also a fan of Ghost – Prequelle gets a lot of play for me still.
