Here we are again: the thread where we discuss the games we are playing in 2024

Not sure if I’m misunderstanding, but Dead Space doesn’t have Tank Controls (one of its defining features as a horror game following shortly after RE4). Signalis and REmake offer the choice between Tank Controls (character-relative: Up moves the character forward regardless of their facing direction) and camera-relative controls (Up moves the character “up” on the screen). Which scheme did you play them with?

I admit I find the “tank controls discourse” such as it is to be annoying. Where I’m coming from is reading conversations about Silent Hill online and seeing handwringing comments like “I hope if they ever remake this game they get rid of the tank controls!!!” from people who, much of the time, haven’t given the game and its control scheme an honest shot. You can imagine how this sort of idea about such games has been punted around on Twitter for twenty years and is now accepted as gospel in a world where young players discover these games by watching them rather than playing them.

(And besides all that, the terminology is imprecise!)
