I need game recs and I need them NOW: 1985-1989 edition

I recently had the idea of only playing games from a set year/console/era for a week, working my way through time over a few months or until I get tired of it. I need recommendations! Still undecided on the exact format but I’m leaning towards doing it in 5 year periods (though console-based also seems appealing). I’m new to gaming in the grand scheme of things, and aside from playing a few of the capital C Canon classics my experience with games pre-2019 is pretty limited. I’m hoping to find new favorites and play titles I never would’ve tried otherwise. I also love making zines in my spare time, I think this could be a fun framework to work with (though I equally love starting ones and never finishing them, so no promises).

Would love to know what your favorites from '85-'89 are. No answer is too obvious or obscure, a week is a pretty short time to experience 5 years of highlights and a recommendation helps me prioritize the games I’d like to try (going for a “sampler” approach here, trying something for 15-30 mins and seeing what sticks. I am not delusional enough to think I can play a Dragon Quest and a few Ys games in a week lol). I made a Backloggd list of things I’ve had an eye on for a while now if you want to see what I’m working with. Many thanks in advance!

Kiki Kaikai (1986)
Ninja Princess (1985)
Guardian Legend (1988)

The Mysterious Murasame Castle (1986)

Taito were absolutely on fire during this period.

Just wait until the 90s, when they start iterating on their 80s arcade work.

Gotta do a Bubble Bobble.

If you can find a second player, Bubble Bobble is the optimal answer. Best co-op style game from the 80s.

You haven’t played Arkanoid (1986) until you’ve played Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh (1987)

You’re lucky picking a great era there, not just for console games which there are many, but if you fancy going wild you could enjoy the famous 80s of computer games, specifically for the Spectrum, Amstrad and Commodore 64 computers!

Now there’s way too many to chose from to write a list, but you mentioned you wanted small bursts to try things out, may I recommend a page - https://classicreload.com/ - which has browser based emulation and not only can you pick a system, you can also pick a year to decide what to play!

I can’t think of a better way for you or anyone to get into one of my favourite eras of video games, just because it was the era the really got me into gaming. Oh what a slipperly slope that was…

Enjoy!

If I could pick only two from each year that I would still enjoy today and generally fit the criteria of the original post:

1986:
Jackal (arcade) or the NES version (1988)
OutRun (arcade)

1987:
Galaga '88 (actually released in 87)
Metroid (NES, unless this was '86)

1988:
Gain Ground (arcade)
Forgotten Worlds (arcade)

1989:
Strider (arcade and NES, both unique experiences)
Shadow Dancer (arcade)

Went to How Long to Beat and only chose things that take 30 minutes or less to complete:

1985:
Yie Ar Kung Fu

1986:
The Legend of Kage

1987:
Thunder Blade

1988:

I didn’t set out to only do one a year that’s just how it shook out.

1988: Alien Crush, Aleste
1989: Super Mario Land, The Legendary Axe

If I could only save one game from the fire from this period, it would probably be River City Ransom. April 1989 in Japan, though the Western releases came out 1990 and after, so idk if that disqualifies it from what you’re doing or not.

Kinda seems like you’re set already so I will recommend just the Balloon Trip mode on Balloon Fight for NES. A single run will only take a few minutes and it’s one of my favourites
