Let me give you a nice, little kiss

>

@“connrrr”#p70388 I feel like the form doesn’t make it easy to input an arcade game—it’s not a home console, handheld or computer* so should I leave that field blank or put in the platform I played the game on (which for me wasn’t actual arcade hardware)?

I actually just forgot about arcades

>

@“captain”#p70356 “Ending Theme” (Final Fantasy X)

my dude

>

@“JoJoestar”#p70383 It was hard to pick: only one Final Fantasy

won't be a problem for me

After much deliberation (I have a list of 60 contenders!!) I finally managed to submit only 10:

  • - MOTHER 3
  • - EarthBound / Mother 2: Gīgu no Gyakushū
  • - NieR: Automata
  • - Ōkami
  • - Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color
  • - Wild Arms
  • - Ihatovo Monogatari
  • - Herakles no Eikō IV: Kamigami no Okurimono
  • - Daikōkai Jidai II (SNES ver.)
  • - Rule of Rose
  • Now please for the love of god get this form away from me before I start doubting myself

    Streets of rage 3

    Ape escape

    Elevator action returns

    Flywrench

    Earthbound

    Gran turismo 4

    Ridge racer 7

    Revenge of shinobi

    Bomberman hero

    Animal crossing new leaf

@“connrrr”#p70388 However I did add the option for Arcade, so you can go in and edit your response!

This is gonna be a tough as heck one. I'm gonna percolate on this some time and get back to you all. I like a video game with some music in it so to narrow down to 10 will be a task and a half!

provisional list based on eighteen seconds of thought:

    Banjo Kazooie
    Diddy Kong Racing
    Mario 64
    Wii menu musics
    Sonic 2
    Earthbound
    Beautiful Katamari
    Persona 3
    Persona 4
    Videoball

@“connrrr”#p70388 i just put ‘retro computer’ because it seemed the closest to me for some reason

I want to put some soundtracks that come to mind here just as a place to keep them.

    Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Super Smash Bros. Melee: Smash... Live!
    Castlevania (NES)
    Splatoon 2
    Sonic 2
    Super Mario Bros. 2
    Ys (PC88)
    Metroid Prime
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    Mario Tennis (GBC)

Welp there's 10. This is frustrating because _I know_ I'm forgetting stuff. Also, many of these are fine soundtracks but are mainly here for one or two outstanding tracks. I have less of a conception of what constitutes a great soundtrack for a game, as opposed to a great album. I'll need to think on it. I'm enjoying seeing others lists and I'm excited for the eventual results. Cool project!

@“xhekros”#p70390 My first edit was changing 7 to Zero seeing you already had that one covered…… I'm sorry.

@“JoJoestar”#p70383 Crap, just realized I forgot all about Rondo. Time to commit some more infanticide.

Provisional list that I will gradually chop, change and otherwise butcher until I finally settle on a list that I’m still not happy with:

    Ridge Racer Type 4
    Incredible Crisis
    Um Jammer Lammy
    Beautiful Katamari
    Splatoon
    Einhänder
    Sonic Rush
    Ape Escape 3
    LocoRoco
    Super Mario 3D World

I'm sticking to one game per series and it's killing me as I'd almost certainly have all three PaRappa games, like four Sonics and multiple Ridge Racers in there.

BRB, gotta look at my phone‘s MP3s and my phone’s chiptune archives…

My rubric is roughly aligned to "do I want to listen to this as an album" because that's how I generally consume music. Please know that I greatly appreciate how music is integrated into the design of a game (what's up _Dig-Dug_?) but that's not really how I will listen to stuff.

    In rough generational chronological order:

  • - _Ecco the Dolphin 2: The Tides of Time_
  • - _Castlevania: Bloodlines_
  • - _Sonic 3 / & Knuckles_
  • - _Chrono Trigger: Brink of Time_ In the interest thread linked above, this album was specifically called out as a "?" and I'm specifically putting this on. I'm right. You're wrong.
  • - _Ape Escape_
  • - _Ridge Racer Type 4_
  • - _Einhänder_
  • - _Persona 4 Arena Ultimax_ is kind of a trick as it has nearly the complete soundtracks from both P3 and P4 music, but Ultimax the game in the series I play regularly. I've never played the P3/4 RPGs. _P5_ is quite good but doesn't make this list. But this is a tip: if you can't choose between P3 or P4 soundtracks, just list _P4AU_.
  • - _NieR: Automata_ especially how the "Hacking Tracks" are blended into the sound design.
  • - _Streets of Rage 4_ (Fight me over this one - it's superb.)
  • Games I dropped while making this list or I want to discuss also in rough chronological order:

  • - Any Streets of Rage 1-3 I like them all for the different things they each do.
  • - _Mechwarrior 2_ is probably better than the _Ghost Bear's Legacy_ expansion soundtrack, but there may be better individual tracks on Ghost Bear's CD. Those discs are interesting mixes of melodic music and ambient music.
  • - _Ecco the Dolphin_ There are a few superb tracks on this, but not enough of them and several of them are variations. The CD version of both Ecco games have even less diversity and more variations.
  • - _Final Fantasy VII_ This one really hurt to drop considering I probably listened to it the most of anything I've mentioned. I think it's been obviated by time because the samples don't sound good even compared to its contemporaries. _Final Fantasy Tactics_ sounded so much better and though it's more ambient than The _VII_ soundtrack, I would tell someone else to listen to _Tactics_ first. Also, if it was covered in _Remake_ I probably prefer the _Remake_ version.
  • - _Chrono Cross_
  • - I learned how to play a few pieces from the _Final Fantasy X_ soundtrack on piano.
  • - _Videoball_ ... it's so good man.
  • - _Etrian Odyssey V_ You can just pick your favorite Etrian Odyssey game and slot it in this position and also cover any PC88/98 soundtracks whether or not you like the FM or arranged versions.
  • Sorry Koji Kondo! There are no NES games on my list! This is interesting considering I've been writing music for that system lately and I adore the _Mega Man_ 2-5 soundtracks. And even though I adore those, I don't like the _Wiley Wars_ versions much though I find them extremely interesting academically.

@"billy "#p70424 You and I are music buddies in more ways than one.
@Gaagaagiins I'm doing a bunch of high-quality data entry for you. I better get a like for this! (Thanks for the fun thread.)

    shoot i just remembered Nier

i'm not posting my top10 here. i already gave it to The Form!

    >

@“RubySunrise”#p70415 Super Smash Bros. Melee: Smash… Live!

    >

    @“RubySunrise”#p70415 Metroid Prime

    > The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

    we should be friends

Here's my hastily thrown together list:

    Animal Crossing (GCN)
    Samorost 3
    Celeste
EarthBound / Mother 2: Gīgu no Gyakushū
    Bomberman Hero
    Undertale
    Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment
    Tony Hawk Pro Skater ~~2~~
    Pikmin 2
    ~~Gameboy Camera~~ Transistor

Edit: I'm going to revisit tonight, probably make some edits, and then add to the Google form.
Edit: Entered my submissions on the form. Thanks for setting this up!

    These ones feel strong

  • - Shatter – PSN, 2009
  • - **Napple Tale** – DC, 2000
  • - **Opoona** – Wii, 2007
  • - **Fragile Dreams** – Wii, 2009
  • - **teelozz: Skyward Sword** – Wii, 2011 (but which of Groose's themes is "hottest track"?)
  • - **We ♥ Katamari** – PS2, 2005 (forgotten and less accessible every generation, the 21st century's most complete Katamari)
  • - **Final Fantasy VIII** – PSX, 1999 (point against it for maybe the series' worst version of the chocobo theme; wins it all back and more for Eyes on Me)
  • These ones feel NOT AS STRONG

  • - VVVVVV
  • - **Street Fighter III 3rd Strike**
  • - **Contact**
  • Included: two games I haven't played all the way through.

I have all these other ones I'd been considering:

    >!

Gitaroo Man (I‘m trying to keep the games I put in my Top 10 favourite games list out of the running, but if I was going to make an exception it had to be Fragile)

    Metal Gear Rising

    Rondo of Blood

Gravity Rush (haven’t finished it yet though!! and I usually listen to this arranged edit of both GR and GR2 OSTs combined, so I don‘t know which game has more right to be on the list)

    Chrono Cross

Final Fantasies V, XIII, XV? IX, and of course XII

    Lost Odyssey

    Hotel Dusk

MediEvil (Pumpkin Gorge definitely hottest track)

Mirror’s Edge (bracketed by the beautiful title theme and the earnest Still Alive)

    Read Only Memories

VA-11 HALL-A (despite my letdown with the game itself)

    Flower Sun and Rain

    Saturn Bomberman

    Okami

    Sonic 2

Sonic & Knuckles (stronger on its own without Sonic 3 locked on, sorry)

    Jet Set Radio

    Final Fantasy Tactics

    FFT Advance

    Mother 3

    Pokémon RSE, DPPt

    Cave Story

Mega Man 2 (Video and Arcade Top 10)

Mega Man Legends 2 (hottest track? I think so too, yes)

Panzer Dragoon Saga (don‘t listen to the credits theme before playing the game, if you do intend to play it, is my recommendation)

Metroid Prime 2 (on the strength of Torvus Bog alone, apparently)

ZOE 2 (same thing with Beyond the Bounds)

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (PSX, Saturn—did you know the composer went on to score the Jurassic Worlds? maybe I should check those new movies out after all)

DmC: Devil May Cry (I want to sing this game’s praises more often)

    >

@“connrrr”#p70445 Sonic & Knuckles (stronger on its own without Sonic 3 locked on, sorry)

Not sorry at all as you and I are right.

Play the “Sonic 3 Complete” ROM hack. It corrects the music cutscenes back to the _Sonic 3_ versions as well as some other musical quality of life updates.

    >

@“connrrr”#p70445 Gravity Rush (haven’t finished it yet though!! and I usually listen to this arranged edit of both GR and GR2 OSTs combined, so I don’t know which game has more right to be on the list)

    >

    >

    >

(same thing with Beyond the Bounds)

look pal what's the big idea, you want the keys to my house too??? as long as you've got my social security number and id and everything

I toiled enough over including Gravity Rush that I've bumped it up in my to-play queue—it's been long enough that I'll just [start over](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/1488-ep-235-unchardita-with-vincent-diamante), and finish it this time! Which arrangement is the one you usally listen to? I thought the one I'd been using lately didn't have any GR2 in it, but I was wrong...

    >

@“antillese”#p70425 I think it’s been obviated by time because the samples don’t sound good even compared to its contemporaries.

(i am not arguing with you, _however_) I think this is an interesting reason to advocate for the Tactics OST over VII—to my ear the Tactics samples in general fall farther into the uncanny valley situation where it actually is more difficult for me to listen to (relatively speaking) because it's closer to how real instruments are supposed to sound, while VII's primitive strings and horns sound fake enough that they fit into the box my brain classifies as whole-cloth made-up synthesizer sounds. I really like the bell/vibraphone sounds specifically. Absolutely too much flute, though.
