@“captain”#p70453 your comments on VII are a much more well-articulated way of saying what i would have said, which is FFVII music sounds like FFVII music, which is its own genre, built from its own suite of custom-made sounds. while the graphics have aged poorly, the soundscape from that game sounds like a crystal from a time that is both far in the past and far in the future.

@“captain”#p70453 Which arrangement is the one you usally listen to?
looks like it's "Vinphonic's OST Edit". From the readme:
>
This is Tanaka rocking the house with much thematic interplay, pure orchestra on and off, with a beautiful fusion of synth and orchestra only Tanaka can pull off and with truly spectacular moments from smashing guitar solos to dramatic operatic soprano. But the representation on the soundtrack albums was sorely lacking, with unecessary loops and fadeouts that detract from (my) enjoyment.
>
So I proudly present you a proper representation of the two scores sadly butchered on the soundtracks. I did what I could to match it as closely to the real recording session as possible, so this time there is not a single pointless loop left and the few pieces that do still loop do so naturally (meaning each version only ONCE and then a proper finish). I’ve also rearranged all pieces for a more organic narrative and combined many pieces from the two soundtracks together that work in context. Now you can listen to almost three hours of glorious music back to back without getting an epileptic seizure or anticipating the dreadful fadeout. And I did it all free of charge.
I've got a mega.nz link I can share, either in PM or here in a post if it won't get me banned.

@“rootfifthoctave”#p70430 we should be friends
Ok!

@“antillese”#p70425 I learned how to play a few pieces from the Final Fantasy X soundtrack on piano.
The music of FFX fits the game so well. It's how contextual it is within the game that makes this soundtrack so beautiful.
>
@“antillese”#p70425 and also cover any PC88/98 soundtracks whether or not you like the FM or arranged versions.
I couldn't agree more. I've never played anything on a PC88/98, yet I listen to random soundtracks all the time.
>
@“antillese”#p70425 I adore the Mega Man 2-5 soundtracks
I can't decide between one Mega Man soundtrack of these four, so I've given up for now. Usually I listen to Mega Man 3 when I want to listen to Mega Man, so maybe that's the one.

@“connrrr”#p70445 teelozz: Skyward Sword – Wii, 2011 (but which of Groose’s themes is “hottest track”?)
Clearly it's _Dejected Groose Theme_. I forgot how incredible the Skyward Sword soundtrack is. Trombone as Groose's thematic instrument is perfect. Some of these [tracks ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEGY7dmFzuM&list=PLUXEBUs17WcT7UL9yvlfTD_ST1xv5DJAN&index=18)do such a great job of musical storytelling.
There are only 16 responses so far, and the way that the Form spits the result out on to a spreadsheet means that I can‘t really do even cursory analytics with much precision, because until I can finalize it, it only shows collated data on each individual question… so I’ve got 15 16 entries on 10 separate instances of the same question instead of 15 160 entries on the same question.150
However, I can definitely say that we won't be ending up with a list comprised entirely of Honor Roll (helpfully, two participants chose the same game on the same question, so it was easy to see even without the data having been collated in any way), and, hoo boy, there are some trends that are so noticeably present that they can't be missed!
Thanks everyone for contributing so far!
No special albums or anything, just the games with my fav music (and no duplicate composers, or else it’d mostly just be a Yasunori Mitsuda list):
Honorable mentions: _Metroid Prime_, _Halo: Combat Evolved_, _The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time_, _Shadow of the Colossus_, _Ico_, _Riviera: The Promised Land_, _Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Böse_, _Xenoblade X_, _Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne_, _Hotline Miami_, _Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty_, _Earthbound_, _Kirby’s Adventure_, _Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles_, _Legend of Mana_, and pretty much any given _Castlevania_
not for nothing i just want to mention Blinded by Light from the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack. i don‘t think we’ll see much love for that OST in its entirety, but that one song towers above whatever horizon you currently have your back toward, and slyly evades direct eye contact.
I exist to list.
Ape Escape
Chrono Cross
Ihatovo Monogatari
Metroid Prime
Mother 3
Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness
Night in the Woods
Silent Hill 2
Sonic Adventure
Spyro the Dragon

@“Gaagaagiins”#p70316 If you want to have me double check that your submission was received, just @me any time in this thread.
@“JoJoestar”#p70416 Don't worry. Knowing you had that OST in your heart is enough, my dear.
@“whatsarobot”#p70475 I was thinking about putting XIII in my list, and yeah, Blinded by Light is one of the best tracks. And talking about XIII, Worlds Collide is another track on XIII-2 I liked. But yeah, XIII rocks and has a lot of really good tracks. Hamauzu did a nice job.

@“connrrr”#p70445 Included: two games I haven’t played all the way through.
i'm sure to include yu-no, and i haven't ever played it, nor do i have any interest. the music simply owns.
Subject to edits and unordered (but probably not because too lazy)
Battle Garegga
Armed Police Batrider
Street Fighter 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Capcom vs SNK 2
Ninja Gaiden
Castlevania
Mega Man 2
Streets of Rage 2
Earthbound
@“RubySunrise”#p70467 it shows in that there‘s SO much music (351 tracks in the album I have), and so many of those tracks are dynamic or variations. How Fi’s theme evolves is a narrative all its own.
@"whatsarobot"#p70475 @"xhekros"#p70502 Fang's Theme, though (and that whole sequence it plays to is surpiringly thrilling). I need to get back to that game after SOPFFO. Something finally convinced me to play the whole trilogy, and I didn't expect that to happen.

@“wickedcestus”#p70408 Banjo Kazooie
I feel like whether or not someone loves the Banjo Kazooie soundtrack is some kind of personality test that determines their ultimate musical path in life. As a kid my brother loved it and I was... confused by it. We now both listen to lots of music that could be described as "weird sounds," though the weird sounds we listen to are very different.
I keep on wondering whether my disdain towards Banjo Kazooie is real, or just some weird rebellion towards my older brother, since it was his absolute favorite game. Maybe I should play it again.
I fully expect to put a great deal of time and thought into this, only to produce and exceedingly boring list, but that‘s just how it goes! I’ll post/update my work in progress list here before I etch it into @Gaagaagiins 's memory banks. The top 4 are my kneejerk, no-thought-necessary picks…the rest will need to percolate:
_On lock:_
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Chrono Cross (PSX)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Earthbound (SNES)
_On the block:_
Wild Arms (PSX)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
Top Gear Rally (N64)
Doom 64 (N64)
Waterworld (SNES)
Nidhogg (PC/PS4)
Astal (Saturn)
Tetris (CD-i)
@“TracyDMcGrath”#p70517 on second thought not only no edits, but I think if your list is different from this you're just objectively wrong*. Sorry.
\* _acceptable deviation includes substituting Street Fighter 3 for 2, Streets of Rage 3 for 2, or your pet favorite OST for Armed Police Batrider * *_
\* * _assuming your pet favorite OST is exactly Chrono Cross_
i ended up with:
rayman
thunder force v
grim fandango
myst
yu-no
nights
the longing
panzer dragoon zwei
quake
katamari damacy
i might edit hottest track for one or two, but those are the games. based on the number of times i wrote "1996", team heart wins over team head.

@“pasquinelli”#p70554 grim fandango
ooh, nice pick--this one might end up on my list, too. I was scrolling through my list of game OST records I own and when I saw Manny's face I immediately heard some upright bass plucking in my head. I had the Grim Fandango theme set on my PS4 for most of my time with that console, if only for the smoky jazz tunes that would play on the main menu.
YU-NO
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
EVE Online
FF7
SOR3
SOR4
Persona 4
Katamari Damacy
Metroid 2
Ocarina of Time
The original FF7 soundtrack is clearly superior to the remake, but the sequence Midnight Rendezvous -> Collapsed Expressway -> Hi Five is magic. That chunk of the game almost made a Clerith believer out of me.
Absolutely shocked that anyone could prefer FF7R’s OST to the original tbh. To me it’s a perfect parallel to the game’s environments insofar as it makes the game’s original assets “bigger” while completely missing what made the original lo-fi assets (hand-crafted backgrounds and meticulous synth compositions) so atmospheric and evocative to begin with. Masashi Hamauzu, who’s obviously very good in his own right, tries to be “faithful” to Uematsu in an overly literal way, and the end result doesn’t feel like either his distinctive style or Uematsu’s. (I also can’t remember a single piece from the OST off the top of my head except Uematsu’s ending song.)
