Segale donated a lot to the Democratic party. One point I'd add to treefroggy's, though, is that Mario was named after Segale not because of his political donations but because he was a landlord who yelled at then-Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa in front of his employees. So Mario is named after the formidable landlord who gave them time to pay rent; landlords are an establishment Republican trope.

Now, it's possible that Mario is also a landlord. After all, a key feature of the early game of Super Mario World is Yoshi's House. Yoshi leaves a letter declaring he is not home and that he is fighting Bowser.

Players commonly assume that Yoshi and Mario are friends, or that they are in a sort of chivalric entanglement as rider/mount. (This image of the knight is also a common conservative trope, but I digress.) One can also read the "Sorry I'm not home" as an excuse given to a landlord looking for an overdue payment. Accordingly, Mario joining in on the journey to defeat Bowser would be self-serving in two ways. Mario also wants to defeat Bowser and thus goes along with the journey, but he also raises, rides, and kills many generations of Yoshi just to get a dinosaur able and willing to go back to his house to pay Mario rent. The exploitation of the fellow warrior continues even after the veteran returns home.
Iām not sure how Marioās politics factor into this, but canonically, he is a scumbag boyfriend.

Nintendo should make a grim bioshock style game where Mario is living under Mussoliniās Italy in the thirties and the important decisions you make will result in Mario joining the fascist party or fleeing along anarchists after being sentenced to death by the state and somehow ending in the mushroom kingdom
