I think the way I put it at the time was that I thought it was definitively a better videogame, and I meant that mostly as a compliment but also at least partly in the derogatory sense lol
My secret hope was that their intentions to make it a duology were all a ruse, and Sony Santa Monica’s Kratos and The God of War Gang would be crushed and defeated in the endless cycle of Ragnarok, which would then, of course, restart in the next game, and give Sony Santa Monica’s Kratos and The God of War Gang another shot at the final battle. I am literally the best amateur game dasigner ideas guy in the world
Maybe I’m revealing just how autistic I am but as much as I can’t conceive of eating advent calendar chocolate early*, I truly can’t conceive of, if one were to do such a hedonistic thing, also still eating them out of order. Like… just buy a goddamned chocolate bar…
Maybe God of War Ragnarok was the “buying an advent calendar and seeing that inside of each day was an entire chocolate bar, and Sony Santa Monica are also in there winking at you and going “pretty awesome, eh?? A full chocolate bar in every day!” but like gdi if I wanted a chocolate bar every day I would just buy 25 chocolate bars, I bought an advent calendar cause I wanted an advent calendar” of videogames
Or the first 3 days are full size chocolate bars, and then day 4 is fun-size. Then they continue to get smaller for a couple weeks until Christmas you have to eat 10 bars
as a fellow person with the 'tism who has a family tradition of advent calendars:
I cannot eat chocolate early but I notoriously eat them 2 and 3 days later. it’s funny, just this year I bought my sister and I advent calendars from the same mfg we used to get them from when we were kids. this is our first time having once since i was 14-15 and I’ve missed at least 2 days now when that was unthinkable when i was a child.
Re: Ragnarok.
I felt 2018 suffered too much from that being the year other games decided to go ‘formerly bad dad tries to Fix Himself’ and i thought it did so relatively poorly. Whereas Ragnarok was much better about showing Kratos Doing The Work required to be a better human in ways 2018 and TLOU didn’t. I also very much enjoyed Atreus’ sequences but I understand I’m the minority (heh) in that regard.
Catching up a few days is absolutely a sophisticate’s way of enjoying an advent calendar. Perfect way to both savor the experience of suspense while not forgetting to indulge oneself a little too
Any advent calendar dispensing full size candy bars would be the god of advent calendars much like house in the neighborhood that dispenses full size candy bars at christmas. (It’s not common lol)
That’s wild 'cause I thought it did so in a way that felt shockingly grounded, in the sense that, yeah, it wasn’t neatly tied up in a single game (which in the fiction of the game is, like, what, a week?) It explored what a meaningful breakthrough beginning of that process would look like while leaving a lot left unanswered.
However we don’t have time to get into that further because THE GAMER AWARDS BEGINS IN 7:45
I will be watching tonight mostly to see which authentic celebrity friendships and embarrassing musical performances are unveiled.
Will Geoff’s digitized likeness show up in the latest Kojima trailer so that I can look forward to taking simulated friendship photos with him in the obligatory photo mode? Only time will tell.
I’ll be on the lookout for Sakurai for you my friend. Don’t you think they’d be downright contractually obligated to do that in a Nintendo Direct though
