Anyone else read the title to the tune of Abba's Money Money Money? I apologize in advance.
That new one coming looks neat, bubblegum-pink-balloon-stretched-tightly-over-huge-pointy-things mechanic inclusive.
This thread reminded me that I got Triple Deluxe for my birthday years ago and never finished it! I feel like I've played a little of so many games in this series but never finished one, like Epic Yarn was fun co-op for the bit I played of it. I loved the way Rainbow Curse looks. Super Star, Dream Land, uhh maybe Tilt 'n' Tumble??
I didn't know until kind of recently that Kirby had a drift racing game on the gamecube, or that that was Sakurai's last turn directing a game in the series. Haven't gotten around to checking out yet so that's all I got to say about it!!
noticing a couple folks in here saying that they never finish Kirby games.
this reminds me: it's one of the reasons i think Kirby's Dream Land is still the best Kirby game. it's super short! you can finish it in half an hour and have an absolute blast.
the other reason is, i think that Kirby was better before he started copying enemy abilities. but i'll probably have a hard time convincing people of that one.

@“whatsarobot”#p59330 Kirby was better before he started copying enemy abilities
I've said before that _Kirby's Epic Yarn_, despite initially not developed to be a Kirby game, is ironically the most authentically "Kirby" game since _Kirby's Dream Land_. That initial concept of Kirby only being able to hold or throw a single object at a time, no abilities or anything, is a really neat idea - and that's all _Kirby's Epic Yarn_ is, too! I think it makes for tighter, more "deliberate" level design than having to account for however many abilities any player might have at any particular point in the game. I love me some Kirby abilities, but it's a shame that the original concept Kirby had as a unique spin on platformers has kind of been left behind.
① I love Kirby.
② I love that Kirby is tasked to save the poor, innocent Waddle Dees he has been exterminating his entire life. Those are MY indegenous oppressed inoffensive people to exploit and turn into food, go get your own! I used to joke that Kirby shared pretty much the exact same character profile, traits and powers as Marvel’s Galactus but this new game makes me realize he might just be a metaphor for the U.S. Foreign Affairs.
thank you for this thread emily
i rented kirby air ride around 2004 and my brother refused to play it with me. for some reason i felt the need to jump right into multiplayer and, lacking a human opponent, played against an unmanned second controller
i lost
i lost the race to the second controller with no one at the wheel
this is the most embarrassing thing that's happened to me while playing a video game
@“captain”#p59362
heck

@“captain”#p59362 i lost the race to the second controller with no one at the wheel
I would give up video games if that happened to me
i was not allowed video games as a child
but i had a best friend
when the first Smash Bros came out i knew Super Mario and I knew Pokemon but the rest of the characters were alien to me.
i remember asking if Kirby was a Pokemon and my friend said yes.
eventually he got Crystal Shards and that was the first single player N64 game I did more than poke at. little me had a real hard time understanding running around in 3D. i desperately wanted to love Banjo Kazooie (lol) and Super Mario 64 but i could not navigate them. Crystal Shards was a return to the games I had loved on the SNES.
also that anime is maybe the best example of 4Kids personality as a brand at the time
poyo
need you all to know about the Kirby cafe in Tokyo, if you didn't know already

poyo!
@“captain”#p59362 even knowing there's no accelerator button in the game, this is funny
I generally like the idea of Kirby, but it‘s 50/50 if I bounce of the games instantly after starting them. The last one I was really able to play deeply was Robobot, Star allies just didn’t feel right. I‘ll probably get this new one, though I am hesitant to pay $60 for just about anything anymore so I could see it being a few years before I’m really ready to consider it.
I grew up playing Kirby 64, which has remained my favorite to this day. I remember really enjoying getting to combine the powers. That it isn't a mechanic where you suck up two enemies to combine them, but instead you suck in one, take their power out of you and throw it at another enemy is a lot of fun. It creates a risk where there wasn't one, you could just miss and lose your power, or you could take damage by another attack without a good way to defend yourself or move away. It's a really tiny change, but I always wanted them to bring it back. Finding a new combo felt like really discovering something. Plus those combined powers were sweet. (turning into a curling rock, a flaming snowman, or throwing exploding shuriken) You also get to play as King Dedede.
Kirby Superstar was my favourite Kirby game as a kid, and I feel like they just keep moving further and further away from that design. I still appreciate the Kirby games for what they are, but they‘ve settled on this formula where the levels are super easy and boring. The way to engage with the more recent Kirby games is doing their little “find the right ability” environmental puzzles. That’s always been a thing, but now it feels like it's more that and less everything else. Secrets have been homogenized into the “collect 3 stars per level” design.
_for me_ that's the exact opposite of what I like in Kirby. I don't really like hunting for secrets in games, I prefer to blast through them as fast as possible. Some people like hunting for secrets and that's cool too! In that sense I'm a little excited for the new Kirby game. Will they keep the same design philosophy? Maybe.
The transition to 3d, to me, signifies that this is their attempt at a big breakout game a-la 3 Houses. Kirby games do fine, but they don't usually reach beyond the existing fans. IMO In finally making a 3D Kirby game, HAL is saying "Hey look at this! This is THE Kirby game to pay attention to. We're changing things up!".
Also, as a kid I was very disappointed by Kirby 64 being 2D. I actually like that one now, but I was very excited at the idea of a 3D Kirby game which just... never happened...
@“Connor”#p59532
well u better buckle up buddy
because were maken it hapenn!!! dawg!!!
march 25th
I'm excited for that new Kirby! I really enjoyed Triple Deluxe and I REALLY ENJOYED Robobot, but I skipped Star Allies after folks seemed pretty lukewarm about it.
I haven't played every Kirby, but a good bunch of em. My first was 64, and this new one brings me back to it in a lot of ways--especially with the vibes of the earth-ish environment reminding me of the Shiver Star segment of 64.
@“Syzygy”#p59534 yeah I spent hours and hours playing city trial as a kid. It‘s a cool little hub to explore and find secrets in, but I was always like “what if there were things in the secret locations”. Let’s be real, there‘s basically nothing to do when you’re off your star.

I'm gonna bleed that game dry!!!
I keep a handful of Kirby images nearby in case of needing emergency cheering up, so here's a few of The Boy.
