@“Neko”#p144459 @“IrishNinja”#p144457 Yeah the system is in 480p mode. You should be able to change the video mode in settings file on PC. (I need to update Swiss. Newest release was 10/11/2023)
@“copySave”#p144464
@“robinhoodie”#p144463 figured as much! which i had a tutorial online to just blind change it from the system, but it‘s a weird/specific ask haha
okay ill try from the settings in the folder on my desktop, not sure how much that’ll change since it‘s just a boot image copying over but maybe there’s something i missed
@"Neko"#p144461 oh my god this is so baller
@“copySave”#p144464 hey, not to be a bother but do you or anyone here know what i specifically need to do to the boot.iso to force 480i? i tried using a recovery image boot but it had the same results
i did just setup SD2SP2 so once i get the settings right, at least they should stick!
@“IrishNinja”#p144943 gosh, I had to go through this with my GCN too. I think I plugged it in over S-video and changed Swiss to force 480i, and then plugged it back in over component. Are you getting the scrambled video in the console‘s home menu? (I’m using a xenoGC so if you're on picoboot this may not be applicable.)

@“connrrr”#p144945 exactly that; the GC boot screen is fine, it‘s swiss that goes to shit. but you’re right, maybe ill just set it up over composite & make sure the settings save, and that oughta do it!
i imagine swiss thinks forcing this resolution when going through component cables is helpful, heh. thanks for the idea!
I kept an old CRT computer monitor until like 2017 cause I had a hunch I‘d want it some day and then my dad sold his house and I let him get rid of it and now I’m like dang, it'd be cool to have that.
@“treefroggy”#p146877 Make a thread about crts in games plz
By the way last month I sawed this wine box in half to make a little tv console stand. Needs more work for me to be able to drive without removing it first, but it gets the job done of raising my tv a bit and proving cable / device storage inside.
Another plan was to get a broken vcr and hollow it out, but this has its pros and cons. I like it!
Someday I’ll make a cabinet or something…
Does anyone have a CRT repair person they use? I’m looking nationwide (USA). I thinking about buying a couple of malfunctioning CRTs that would be small enough to ship.
@“Naaaaaaaathan”#p147081 I know of at least one shop in LA that specializes in vintage tech repair including CRTs. they stay afloat in downtown LA due to many factors like film makers and all the other stuff that goes on in LA. They seem pretty legit and I‘ve referred people there before. Then in orange county there’s the PVM guru who was interviewed by RetroRGB. My buddy and I corresponded with him for a while about a grip of PVMs and BVMs we had that needed work, he knew exactly what was wrong with them just by description over the phone. I think his name is Pat? Just find the interview on Retrorgb from around 2018 or 17.
Anyways here's a couple CRTs in an abandoned Chrome facility. Second one is in TAAAAAAATE MOOOOODE, no idea what they could have needed that for!

place has been abandoned for a long time but hasn't yet been looted due to how well sealed off it is. from urbx community
@“treefroggy”#p147087 Froggy has the hookups! Can you DM me the contact info for the repair shop you mentioned? As for Pat, I found the Retrorgb interview. I messaged him on eBay. How did you get in touch with him?
@“Naaaaaaaathan”#p147096 It's called Midframe LLC, in downtown LA. posting publicly for anyone here.
I think Pat gave me his number after I messaged him on ebay, or whatever the interview said to do to reach out to him, which was probably ebay haha.
Please be very respectful of Pat and his time. He's an old retired man and that retrorgb interview probably gave him a lot of weirdos.
@“Naaaaaaaathan”#p147081 There is also Steve at RetroTech USA
https://www.youtube.com/@RetroTechUSA
Looks like there are several ways to contact him from the links he provides. Unsure as to how much he charges, but many of his repair videos are TVs for clients.
also he is located in Tennessee most of the time!
@“Naaaaaaaathan”#p147081 I‘ve used Cronk's Electronics in Liberty, NY (kind of in the middle of nowhere upstate) which is owned by an old guy with decades of experience. He’s gotten my not-working sets working although he might not be willing to do some of the obsessive things PVM-fanatics focus on (ie replacing capacitors that are still good, trying to adjust the image to ABSOLUTE PERFECTION).
But if you can bring something into the shop, they‘ll look at it and probably get it working. I doubt they’ll do anything mail-order (CRTs are big and heavy and not their primary business) but you could try.
Thanks all for the great recommendations! Love this crew!
Even RetroTech Steve is in agreeance nowadays that really, no shipping company can handle a CRT without breaking something. That weight class always has like a 6-10+ ft drop. Guys like steve will take them in the mail, but basically they always break, even with really scientifically excellent packaging you‘re still not likely to make it to the other side in one piece. I highly recommend against shipping CRTs ever. That is probably the single biggest hurdle for CRT logistics. I kind of like it though? In this day of overnight shipping and amazon, it’s pretty rare we don't get to just GodMode everything into existence in our lives– with the right amount of money. If money is no object, moving CRTs is the same as moving arcade cabinets or any sort of large equipment– you gotta pay a driver or drive it yourself.
Thanks for the advice. I'm getting the feeling that I may be out of luck. Still need to find that magical CRT tech in Portland!
@“Naaaaaaaathan”#p147081 Awake TV in mountain view is where I go. He does a great job but shipping a TV twice is ridiculously expensive and will cost you the price of just buying a pristine one. I‘m not sure he’d even want to ship. But he is good, and you can call him.

My bigger point of advice is call every TV AND electronics repair place near you and ask if they can do it. Skip the phone repair places but otherwise just call around. Once you find a person who's in their 60s and still doing the work, you're likely in business. When nobody would work on my Laserdisc, the guy at awake TV would because he'd been dealing with those for karaoke machines for years. You just never know til you ask.
I just took a quick look and I'm getting the vibes off this place. "since 1970"
