let's discuss CRT TV ownership

@“exodus”#p147243 Thanks for the advice! I’ve taken a set to A-1 before but they only assessed the PSU and were reluctant to work on calibrating the image. All the other repair shops in town have said no, unfortunately. There has to be someone in town that services CRTs since we have two large arcades. Just got to keep searching!

reading the last few posts on this thread, it seems the CRT world (which i am unfortunately not a participant in) and the old valve (“tube”) guitar amplifier worlds are remarkably similar. “can't ship, they WILL destroy it,” “there‘s one guy a half day’s drive away who might be able to fix your old stuff.”

_it is our terrible joy_

In my opinion it’s a great reality check. It’s kind of unreasonable?? Move this heavy precision magic tube no one makes anymore across a landmass so large the human brain can’t visualize that space on its own? Crazy. That’s a lot of oil used, carbon footprint huge

@“Naaaaaaaathan”#p147288 next step is to call those arcades then, I reckon!

the color on mine was weird, i tried a bunch of stuff in the menu, couldn't get it right, finally fixed it with a gentle slap on the left.

I HAVE RE-ENTERED MY PERCUSSIVE MAINTENANCE ERA

@“brillpickle”#p147434 “repair procedure number one” according to the terrible movie I still watch known as space hunter

@“exodus”#p147243 Awake TV in mountain view is where I go. He does a great job but shipping a TV twice is ridiculously expensive and will cost you the price of just buying a pristine one. I’m not sure he’d even want to ship. But he is good, and you can call him.

Ahhhh I’ve had this place bookmarked since you mentioned them on the pod(or maybe it was the forum) a while back. My lil Toshiba could use a check up.

I am on-record as suggesting that CRTs may not be the right tool for the job in 2024 (though I don‘t begrudge anyone here having fun!), but so you all know I’m open-minded, this is a fascinating systems engineering challenge:

https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/19/24044393/games-done-quick-2024-playstation-chrono-cross

The gist is that _Chrono Cross_ frequently changes video resolution modes and every time it does, the analog-to-digital capture cards AGDQ uses take a few seconds to re-detect and sync the signal. Because which product manager would spec a capture card in 2024 assuming you need to detect low-resolution video modes changing frequently! I sure wouldn't have thought this is a use case!

It is pretty great that the analog hardware's syncing circuitry just kind of does this and rolls with different reses and refreshes and you never notice if you're playing on a (decent) CRT from the era!

~(You also won't notice if you're playing on an HDMI monitor in an emulator. 😉)

@“antillese”#p149139 RetroTink 4K finally solves this! I think a firmware update for the 5X might do it as well. Happens to a lot of games, especially on the PS1, lots of switching between 240p and 480i for menus and the like. Chrono Cross, Silent Hill, Tony Hawk, etc. etc.

The only way I can participate in CRT world. :frowning:

@“safety_lite”#p149261 wow I love that you put it on the stand like that, inspiring… hit me up with your FC if you wanna hang out in animal crossing

@“treefroggy”#p149273 Thanks! I‘d love that — My partner got a new switch and I’ve been trying to get our island transferred, but I keep getting an “error message.” I‘m so scared we’re going to lose our island in this process… Hopefully I‘ll be able to get it tomorrow, I’ll send it over if I do

@“treefroggy”#p149279 word.

@“safety_lite”#p149311 call Nintendo and their world class customer service reps will walk you through it!

30"? HDTV WEGA CRT. Eastern WA. Bit of a drive for me, but tempting.

@“onefiftythree”#p149947 I’d buy that for a dollar.

@“tomjonjon”#p149951 good luck getting it home! You’ll need it!

I talked about this last year but I had a strange sound coming out of my PVM which I later learned was caused by humidity getting betweem the seal of the anode tube and causing some arcing so I decided to not use my PVM on rainy humid months.

All that to say that I had to unplug it today cause I kept forgetting about the issue and turning it on to play. Also this is a lesson on how I keep putting of doing stuff cause I didn't
a) _find a place we're they can add some dielectric grease_
or
b) _learn enough and aquire enough tools (mainly electrician gloves and the grease itself) to do it myself safely_

@“穴”#p151210 well I wouldn‘t be too scared to apply some grease around the cap myself, just I’d use a nonconductive applicator, proper dielectric grease, wear hella rubber gloves, hold one hand behind my back in my pocket and the other applies the grease around the cap.

Though again take this advice at your own risk, don't be dumb, do your own research and be careful. Just saying that's how I'd do it.
