Monsters: be they Capsule, Digital, in your Pocket, or down on the old Farm

@“sabertoothalex”#p130177 literally me & my king (except I'm a blue palette swap and my pokeball is green. but i love that he made the pokeball purple also. Realest gen one fanart ive ever seen)

@“treefroggy”#p130188 I love Nidoking, miss him so much :crown:

Has anyone here ever played Spectrobes? Disney trying to do a take on Pokémon and commissioning Jupiter for it sounds fascinating.

I played a chunk of the DQ Monsters 3 demo! It seems pretty fun, I like how quickly you get going in it. Is that a feature of the genre? I feel like all the best monster games throw you into the action real quick and start letting you explore and get around.

You answer some questions to determine your starter, I got Platypunk

I love Young Psaro’s design here with the sick cross body bag

Unfortunately like DQ Treasures before it the game just kinda looks bad and runs poorly. As soon as you get out to the world the resolution drops to like 540p and the framerate hovers around 20fps. Really disappointing, continues to make the DQXIS port look like a miracle.

@“sabertoothalex”#p133870 Yeah, I popped in there, too. I thought it looked a little better than the Treasures demo, but that could be because of the more colorful environments, which are a lot more pleasing to the eye than the bizarre drabness that‘s almost the entirety of that downer demo. It didn’t kill it for me, but I‘ve still been trucking on Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot on Xbox – which my mind frames as a modern version of all those old Dragon Quest-likes for obvious reasons – and dang the comparison is rough, and the frame drops are very noticeable. I did like how chill the battle system is, though; cool how it’s more automated and directed than your average Pokemon. That makes it feel more like you‘re guiding the monsters rather than “being” the monsters, and the result is super breezy – that’s a plus in a naturally grindy genre.

@“tokucowboy”#p133873 Agree on the battle system, it‘s a good time! You nailed it with feeling like you’re working with the monsters more than Pokemon feels. Sorta like how the Digimon World games work except a bit more guided.

Sounds like another game which validates switch custom firmware! When it comes out I’ll be playing with better frame rates for sure! Looks awesome

I‘ve been watching the OG Digimon Adventure for the first time and I’m really digging it. The monster designs are excellent and I‘d like to get into the TCG and Cyber Sleuth games, both of which I’ve heard are great.

@treefroggy If I'm interested in collecting the old virtual pets, how much do they go for these days, and what sorts of batteries do they take?

@“HeavenlyHalberd”#p133921 are you aware of the replicas? Start with a ver.20th that costs literally $6 on Amazon right now. Hell, buy 10 of them for the price of one vintage digital monster.

Only if you really love the analog details should you go on eBay and find one in decent shape for like $40-$50. And that’s just gen 1, anything besides that is way more hard to find.

If you mean not just digimon, and tamas too, we’ll, there’s also 20th anniversary replicas too, but with only a handful of color ways that look like the original 1997 designs. Thankfully tamas are much easer to find for reasonable prices. Search JYWTMGC for a very convenient shop that may have what you’re looking for.

@“treefroggy”#p133928 Are the replicas official Bandai rereleases? I got some of the anniversary Tamas and I thought they were great and I loved the nice tiny size.

@“HeavenlyHalberd”#p134162 yeah they’re all official, you got the micro or whatever, but there are full size ones too that are easily available on the zon

Yu-Gi-Oh has got me by the throat.

@“HyggeState”#p134209 Yu-Gi-Oh! has always been my favorite of the card games, though I‘ve played MtG much more because it’s what all the normies play, and pokemon TCG has the best video game version.

Around 2016 I had a Plant Syncro Black Rose Dragon deck that whupped ass, and was worth about $350 back then, and I had no friends and didn‘t get to play in real life often, mainly using duelist network. Then one day my decks all got stolen, and konami DMCA’d the duelist network. Thus was the end of my career.

Things I like about yugioh:

  • - Slightly smaller cards feels cool and technical.
  • - Extremely convoluted and technical play where it feels like anything is possible
  • - similarly the archetypes presented by various sets are completely all over the place, there's something for everyone
  • - originally owned by BANDAI before it was acquired by konami, two beloved companies
  • - the basis of gameplay involving secrecy of cards not just in your hand but on the field also is neat.
  • - stuff like the Egyptian God Cards was so legendary
  • - *A lot* of tasteful and low key references to konami video games like *Gradius, Goemon, Metal Gear, Gestu Fuma Den, Parodius, Space Manbow, Beat Mania*, and many more, including deep cuts, and never just one character, often entire archetypes based around entire game casts with over 5-10 cards in the series.
  • @“treefroggy”#p134218 My favorite thing about Yu-Gi-Oh.

Legacy of the Duelist has been a small comfort in Covid-19 recovery. I’m hesitant to utter a phrase that would artificially elevate a child’s card game, but I do feel this game was something resembling therapy as I played it while regaining my cognitive functions after a week-long 104-degree fever.

@“HyggeState”#p134220 I had so many ojama cards, I tried to make them work but they didn't.

104 that's wild man glad you survived.

going to edit my above post to include the references to konami video games. because ojamas remind me of Aitsu/Doitsu and that reminds me of all the copious references.

@“treefroggy”#p134233 I’m fortunately on the other end of it. Still regaining some of my faculties and senses.

Here’s a cute card. Ojama Pajama. Which I suppose is my current condition now that I type this up!

    @“HyggeState”#p134234 Us

Thank you @HyggeState and @treefroggy for piquing my interest in Yu-Gi-Oh! What’s the easiest entry point right now? I’m looking for an MtG Arena type of entry if that exists.

@“dracula”#p134245 I am far, far from an expert. I would say I’m a bigger fan of the show and where it sat during Saturday morning cartoons, and the slow trickle of Japanese media coming to The States, and the explosion of “monster friend” media post Pokémon, etc.

That being said, I’d recommend “Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution” if you’re heart is set on experiencing the game. I don’t want to mislead you, so I have to emphasize that while it is feature complete, there are scant other visual niceties. Barebones as heck, and what short cutscenes there are playback at a low compression rate.

All that being said, it has over 10,000 cards.

It is currently on sale for just $10 on seemingly all platforms. It also exists in its own self-contained economy. There are no microtransactions, and all cards are earned by simply playing the game.
