Music that nobody knows about

I present to you a case study in how technology informs genre. Consider the menu theme in Re-Volt. On systems with a disc drive, it's a relatively straightforward take on the sports/party anthem vibe that was popular during the 90s:

But the version that interests me (and which I discovered first; somebody else had to direct me to that first one) is the N64. Because it doesn't have the space for CD quality audio, it had to pare back many of the instruments, leaving only the vocals and horns to carry the melody. What results is this mumblecore-ass ditty:

here's a hanging out in a shopping mall album which was nice to have on late at night

Currently leading the thread.

Also this music is really chill, it reminds me of a vibe I tried creating in a tennis game.

@"chazumaru"#p62418 I'm really enjoying MILK TALK. I wonder if the algorithms don't push it because of the lyrics?

I found out earlier this week that a member of one of my favorite bands, Warehouse, had a side-project called Stevie Dinner. The musical styles are all over the place, but definitely resembles Jack Stauber or early Ariel Pink at times.

Noel‘le Longhaul contains multitudes. I feel like since the social media era she’s more well known for her art (prints and tattoos) than she is for music.

Her most well known music, like Loone, is already relatively obscure, but this album is obscure among her catalogue. It's a collection of lofi recordings of Child Ballads. Just Noel'le and her banjo. She is an incredibly powerful banjo player. Her (re)imagining of these centuries old songs I find very affecting. The one review left on bandcamp I think really nails it.

Had a look through my collection for CDs I bought at gigs. Found a few interesting ones.

I don't remember this gig very well, but I remembered buying the CD. Fun and funky.

Saw these guys in London years ago. They played some of their songs with an electric violin, it was dope.

Saw this guy in a tiny little bar, he played all his songs live on a microKORG.

I heard this on a indie radio station yesterday and it sounds like it's come straight out of Sonic 2.

@“sch”#p58375 really enjoying this btw! finally catching up on stuff here.

and good job @"beets"#p60682 I think this is a great idea.

@"chazumaru"#p62418 I love when you can close the loop on stuff like this. did the rest of the song meet with your expectations? that moment when you hear past the 30 second mark must've been revelatory. (and for me the 1:56 mark was quite a surprise)

@"RubySunrise"#p63666 this is good stuff - reminds me of the brief moments I enjoyed during my time growing up in a folk music club. I listened to a lot of banjo music that just had no soul to it, so it's nice to hear a bit of that leaking through.

@"matt"#p65367 you've seen a lot of electronic music at small venues it seems! That can be fun or infuriating, depending on whether the crowd is listening or talking over it. I can't imagine the guy at the bar fared super well in that regard?

@"LeFish"#p65549 definitely into this one!!!

My only new contribution, and it's not something "nobody" knows about but not a whole heck of a lot of people do, is Helen, a Grouper side project. I never share rock music, and I don't like most rock music that's like this (don't like shoegaze or grunge or whatever dinosaur jr or the pixies are), so it feels like a good thing to showcase from me.

More in character, here's some argentinian post punk. it's not the most amazing thing you'll ever hear, but it IS mightily obscure, so...

If you wind up liking it it got re-released on CD recently: https://twilight-records.com.ar/releaseseuroshima.html

@“exodus”#p65895 Glad you‘re enjoying her pickin’.

And oh man the shoegaze Grouper album rules! I had forgotten about it, I'm so glad you posted.

@“exodus”#p65895 I can’t imagine the guy at the bar fared super well in that regard?

Nah, everyone was super interested. It seemed like a crowd of synth hardware nerds. He performed right in the middle of the bar, no stage or anything. Everyone surrounded him and watched what he was doing, was really cool.

I was quite surprised by the second minute’s swerve for sure! I remember being disappointed at the time but I dig the whole track now.

@“matt”#p65921 that's a delightful experience! I had a place where every show was like that, but it sure as heck closed down

new ceremony single dropped today and its the best thing they've done in forever imho https://youtu.be/rnDlsc6uifU

@“Cheddahz”#p65979 man it continues to blow my mind how much Ceremony has changed over the years. Back in high school/early adulthood I used to see people literally punch each other in the face for fun in the pits at their shows LOL

good for them though, they've always seemed to be true to themselves over what's expected of them

@“sabertoothalex”#p65981 trust me, there's still punching going on in the pits lol, but yeah - you have to respect the band for going the route they want to go (even if not all of their fans are down for it)

@“Cheddahz”#p65985 still opening with Sick after all these years you absolutely love to see it
